Update on possibilites of Transformers

I can see US keeping secrets. Even the head PR guy cant tell how long a ride will be down for scheduled maintance.

Just to play devils advocate, why would Universal start to build a haunted house or what ever they were doing in the bldg, if they knew it was coming down? (On the assumption that they were building a house in there and not doing pre demo inside to make things go faster)

They weren't building anything in there. Soundstage 44 has been used for storage and has also seen haunted houses in the past. There were rumors of it being used this year, but that's bunk. They did store quite a bit of elements that have been developed in the past and have been worked on this year for haunted houses. I know for a fact that SS44 was not going to be used for HHN and was specifically off limits to the designers for use when they began putting things together at the beginning of the year.

The designs for HHN are done early in the year because the designers have to pass them through architects and engineers to be sure they can clear codes - then there are revisions after that happens. If Universal suddenly pulled the building out from under them, they would have to go without one haunted house.

Besides, SS44 was not up to code for mass occupancy, so getting permitting for a haunted house there this year wasn't in the cards. I know with 100% certainty that SS44 was not planned for a haunted house this year and the group designing the houses for HHN was told it was not available, though they just assumed it was because of the structural safety issues in the building for occupancy.

A few things about that picture that seem weird.

Universal never announces a month. It would say winter 2013 or something like that.

The font doesn't seem right. They would use the Universal font for the Universal Orlando part. Seems quite photoshopped to me.

Pretty much everyone feels the Jaws/Amity construction is guaranteed to be Potter.This construction for the Transformers rumor is for a soundstage that was demolished about a month ago.Two separate projects being built,a lot of exciting things going on.Even at IOA Screamscape put a rumor of a Grinch coaster going into the Poseidons Fury building,increasing the size of Seuss Landing and shrinking the Lost Continent even more.

I don't buy into the Grinch rumors, at least not in the Fury building. First, any attraction has to pass muster with Audrey Geisel before it can get approval to go into Seuss Landing. She has been pretty firm about creating attractions that can fit into the theme and be accessible to children of all ages, so don't expect a Mt. Crumpet thrill ride ala Space Mountain or Big Thunder. They did do the Snow Plummet for years during Grinchmas and it's that plot of land that is currently used for storage that has been slated for any kind of expansion. A Grinch attraction is possible, but I doubt they'd break the theming and make the island cross the water. I'd guess a Grinch attraction would go in that space that is now used for pallet and container storage behind NBA City and Hard Rock. There has been discussion in the past about possibly removing NBA City entirely to allow for further expansion of Suess Landing. How serious that has ever been, I don't know. But NBA City is apparently the lowest draw of their sitdowns.

There's also been talk of moving staff buildings and building parking garages for employees to open up more space @ IOA. This is a very real possibility for further expansion of Potter @ IOA after the USF side is done.

A focus in the past has also been the poor use of space in the Jurassic Park island. They have expansion space in the area now used for staging and also have looked at re-developing the area around the Discovery Center. There was actually some discussion that I heard about when Kong opened a few years ago in LA about possibly building a longer attraction using that tech for Jurassic Park with ride cars that would look like a Ford Explorer or Mercedes or whoever would want to sponsor the ride in some way. They wanted to design it so people would not notice so much when they went inside a show building. It probably would have been a hybrid with animatronics and the 360-3D experience. I have no idea if that is still on the table, but there were some concepts that passed around inside UC on it.

There was the possibility of expanding the Marvel Island and using the space that is now the rarely used Toon Theater (or whatever they call it right now). I don't know what they had thought of putting there, but it won't happen now because Disney would have to give permission for any new ride.

A big thing to note if they are building Transformers at USF is that they will have something devised to replace Super Hero Island long term. The Transformers Ride was designed to give the other parks something, but also a failsafe against Disney buying out the Marvel rights. There's a design of it that would allow them to adapt the ride into the Spidey show building in about six months or less. They'd have to re-theme the interior completely and exterior, but Transformers was a fallback for them to re-theme that whole island too.

My gut and the hints tell me that they may have negotiated to do Batman or the whole DC lineup in there after the Potter expansion, but I have no firm evidence to come to this conclusion. I know they preferred to do Batman in the first place, but Warner still owned Six Flags when they were designing IOA and wanted to open up a Six Flags park near Daytona, so they had no interest in licensing the rights in Florida. That and Batman & Robin was terrible and tanked in 1997, making Batman a less appealing addition. Marvel also was very interested in growing their brand into theme parks, so a deal was struck.

But now WB is out of the theme park business in the US and theme park rights for DC and even for Looney Tunes can be had in Florida. California is another matter. That could be a part of the refresh that is being discussed at IOA. Maybe DC where Marvel is and Looney Tunes in Toon Lagoon? It makes some sense.

I would agree with hedging against the Marvel stuff. I'm sure they do have plans to re-theme it in the next decade, but Universal will not just decide to do it. They had to build the Transformers contingency plans in case Disney attempted to try to find some reason for breach of contract and tried to push that through the courts. They haven't done that and have not been nitpicky with the licensing agreement. One concern initially was that they'd put a stop to the character appearances on the Island, but they did not do so.

For Universal, it will come down to money. I think that that is ultimately why Disney has yet to make a move, because any amount they pay will help fund upgraded attractions at a competitor. So right now they are probably both locked into a waiting game, to see who will budge first. Universal saw Disney buy off the distribution deal that Marvel had with Paramount, so they expect that Disney will eventually tire of not being able to fully utilize Marvel properties in their top destination resort and shell out several hundred million to Universal.

They put together a complete redesign of Super Hero Island into the Transformers franchise very quickly back in 2009 and they were developing the logistics of converting the whole island in about six to eight months of intense work. As I said, if Transformers is going into USF then they probably have a similar backup plan ready to go with something else including a mod of Spiderman.

There has been a bit of unease since Disney completed the purchase. Right now they pay royalties to Disney on all the merchandise sold in the island and also send royalties off food sales inside the island. It's not a huge amount in the grand scheme of things and Universal employees know that redoing the island is not a priority at this point, but it even upsets management a little bit.

Even so, Universal management has been happy that Disney has not given them a hard time so far, but they are also aware that not having much control over Spiderman in theme parks and in film may not be wearing well on Disney. Amazing Spiderman has already climbed over $500M in global earnings and probably helped out Universal in some way due to the ride (and Universal's refresh of it - planned to be in place in time for the movie, btw) - Disney is making money off this due to licensing, but it will be chump change compared to what the people who hold the license are getting.

The positive for Disney is that the Avengers aren't tied into the Universal license. The bad news is that the agreement disallowed anyone else inside the state of Florida from using any other Marvel characters in attractions or even meet 'n greets, so all Disney can do is sell merchandise in their parks.

I do know that Disney has met with Universal and made a few offers, but Universal considers them paltry considering they'd have to retheme and might even redevelop some space. The number I initially heard that Uni was aiming for was $1 Billion, since they have the Marvel rights pretty much in perpetuity. The cost goes up for them with renewal, but if Universal continues to be very careful about abiding by the letter of the license then Disney World will not be able to use Iron Man or anyone else for decades. Universal execs think that Disney will increase their offer down the road - and they have been gradually upping it over the past few years. The success of The Avengers and (probably) Iron Man 3 next year may convince them to do something.

I'm sure Universal would've replaced Spiderman with Transformers if they had to, but this could just have easily been taken from plans from Hollywood, not from supposed Marvel revamp plans.

Either way, I think Universal is on a pretty interesting route. With all that will be new in a few years, I'm very excited to see what happens.

Planning was ongoing when the Marvel sale happened, but they had already begun developing the ride to put into the new Singapore park, USH, and drawing up plans to possibly replace the whole Marvel Island with a Transformers one. Design began not too long after Spiderman 3 was a commercial success, but a huge disappointment with fans and critics. The Transformers film did not do as well overall as Spidey 3, but the franchise was seen as one on the rise.

More importantly, licensing tie-ins would be cheaper down the line. But there were no firm plans to do this, just a directive to build it so it could be shoehorned into the Spiderman show building - though they weren't thinking of a tight timeframe yet.

It was less than a year after the announcement that they fully drew up plans for converting the whole Island - and the success of the second Transformers film made it enticing, but they still were undergoing construction on Wizarding World and had committed to investing further in expanding that in the fairly near future.

But from the get-go the Transformers Ride was designed to be able to replace Spiderman if they needed it. There were far more specific plans done in the fall of 2009 in case a quick turnaround was needed and they could have opened Transformers first at IOA if they needed to, probably by early last year. The building layout is different with the ride lift, but there was a secondary design from the getgo that could work inside the Spiderman building's layout with a change of the interior set (and the new ride utilized more projected screens to create the set - so it actually was easier to mod in many ways). You can see the similarity in the scene setups in Transformers and Spiderman. There are some different effects and Spidey has more physical props involved in the building, but Transformers was built off the Spidey layout.

That's also why I don't think they will just put the same Transformers Ride in at USF. The similarities would be too obvious. And the show building is supposed to have more space, so I'd expect a different layout and possibly even a different ride system. This is me spitballing, but I could see them adapting the RoboArm tech used in Forbidden Journey into a Spiderman style ride that has the vehicle on the ground but would be able to tilt and swing the riders around in a 3D environment. That would be a major evolution in that ride design and differentiate it from Spiderman and Forbidden Journey.

Heres the permit for 44, apparently for a 2012 HHN house. They were sent in May 17th 2012, and requested to be removed on June 29th 2012. Final removal I think was July 12th.
