Update on DD's Teeth

I posted earlier that DD had a big fall on Monday afternoon and that she had injured her two front teeth. We took her to pediatric dentist yesterday who was wonderful with her. It turns out that DD hit her teeth so hard that she actually pushed her teeth back up into her gums quite a bit. She also took some pretty good hunks of enamal off the front of her teeth as well and one of her teeth is a little loose. Plus she still had bruising and swelling of the gums, etc..

The good news for now is that it does not appear that she damaged the "inner" parts of her teeth. Hopefully the swelling should be gone within 10 days or so and we will just have to watch her very carefully for a while. She said that she could still develop an abcess that could cause problems so we need to be very vigilant about checking for any changes in her teeth or gums over the next year or so.

She also told us that it could take several months but that she thinks her teeth that were pushed back up in the gums will probably move themselves back out some but her front teeth will likely be shorter than the teeth on the side until she loses her baby teeth. She did say that we could bond the chips in her teeth as she gets older if we would like but that she is pretty conservative with kids this young (DD is 13 months) and thinks it would be best to wait before we make any decision there. She does want to see DD again in 3 months no matter what to take a look and wants us to call her if we notice any changes just to be sure.

Poor little thing...she really is being quite the trooper with all of this. I just can't quite imagine how much pain she must have been in when this happened. Just talking about it seems painful to me. I am just very grateful that this is more than likely only a cosmetic issue for her baby teeth and not something worse. Thanks for all of your good thoughts and prayers for DD.

I'm sorry for your little DD!

DS fell over the edge of a rug the day before his 3rd birthday and knocked one of his front teeth crooked in the socket. We were very worried that it was going to fall out or turn black or something. It healed just fine. Then he was pushing a car across the floor at preschool 7 months later, hit a wrinkle in the rug, fell face first onto his teeth AGAIN. His lip was all swollen and his front teeth were knocked loose. Again, they healed just fine. Over the next year or so he knocked them 2 or 3 more times, but they stayed in until they fell out naturally around age 5 1/2.

Ouch, I'm glad to hear that she's going to be okay though. I know my nephew was jumping on a trampoline (with one of those safety nets) and came down laughing and the net caught one of his front teeth and pulled it crooked in the socket. OUCH!

Teeth are very resilient for the most part though, as long as you haven't damaged that root. And plus with them still being baby teeth, it's a little easier to repair if they had to do anything. Glad that the dentist feels that they'll be alright left alone though, just know that's gotta hurt

My niece had something similar happen around 18 months old. She fell with a sippy cup in her mouth and it pushed one of her front teeth back into her gum. I don't think they did anything at that time but she did need braces as a young teen because the adult tooth in that spot grew in quite crooked. Her teeth are very straight now.

Hope your little one is ok! It always amazes me how tough and resiliant children are.
