Christy called me at 7 this morning to let me know, and all of you, that they are alive in Vermont - housing a village of people her dh and mother have found while driving their 4 wheelers around the area. They are camped out in her house, cellar and in their cars outside They have even rescued some Appalachian hikers. They have no power.
What saved them is that they are 75 feet above the road and an additional 75 ft above the river. Many access points are blocked or underwater. I believe she said that there is one access road to Hanover, NH over the mountain.
Please keep them all in your prayers.
Sorry it took so long to post, but I had no internet access for the first hour.

Thank you so much for the updated... I jumped on facebook this morning to check in and it was over 9 hours ago she checked in...but was hoping they were getting some sleep.... They are so good to open their doors up and rescue those hikers!!

Thanks so much for the update, I'm so glad to hear they are safe!

Thank goodness they are safe.....such wonderful people they are, our own hero's! will continue to keep everyone affected in our prayers!

Glad they are ok and I think it's great that they are helping others!! I wonder if they will go out again and see if they can find anyone else.
Keep us posted!!

More news - just spoke with her - some of the villagers have managed to make it back home - their houses are standing, but with many inches of mud inside, and most of their basements are flooded.
A third hiker who got separated from the others has been found in the village.
The town library basement is underwater and the main floor has lots of mud in it.
Christy's 13 yr old son went home on his 4 wheeler and got jumper cables to get the town's firetruck started.
The new bridge connecting Hartford to the next town did hold up, but since her side of the bridge goes straight down, they are not allowed to use it.When she gets up to her mother's, which is 1 mile up from her, she'll try and get pictures to share later. They still have no power.

Thanks for the update!!!!

Texted with Lisa a while ago.. They are good.. No power and working on removing some trees that fell.. NO damage to the house!!! They don't know when the power will be back on.

thanks for the update on Lisa....amazing no one had a lot of damage!

Thank you for posting about Christy - and also about Lisa. The sun is shining and right here at this house the effects of the storm are minimal.

Only half a mile away, down the hill closer to the river, the water had broached the road when I went out and was up high enough to close the road by the time I came back. All the roads in Schoharie county have been closed as the creek continues to rise. Many homes and farms have been inundated and more plus a historic covered bridge washed away.

Linda be careful driving....don't go into the roads with water!

I hate to hear that Linda...
On FB, Lisa posted they have power now!!!!

I hate to hear about more covered bridges washing away... WE had the one near my hometown taken out by a tornado several years ago... (we were on our way to Disney when my phone started ringing off the hook)... The last good photo I have at the bridge was of our senior class.... They have rebuilt but nothing is like the good ol' bridge!

Spoke with Christy a few moments ago, the water is receding, they do have some access to the village. She told me the power trucks are from Illinois. Said because her farm is up higher, there was the most minute possibility that she might have power back tonight- just a chance she said! You could tell she was hoping!!! Otherwise she would turn on the generator for a while, even to charge her phone.
Said some of the homes in the village were destroyed and they had survived the 1927 hurricane. Mentioned her DH has been on his tractor for 13 hours helping the state get 8 inches of mud off the state road that abuts their property.
Told her we are all concerned, and she said thank you.

Wow, I feel so bad for the folks of VT. Initially with the weather predictions, Irene wasn't going to affect that area. One little wobble, the hurricane went further west that expected and bam, they got hit with water the already saturated soil couldn't accomodate.

Very glad to hear Christy and family are ok. And I bet all the people they had over for their big slumber party appreciated their hospitality. :goodvibes

So glad to hear she is doing okay and her family is being a help to so many others!

Rebecca
