Three months ago, I'd posted about our most precious dog, Wallace (named for William Wallace aka Braveheart) who had been diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma that popped up overnight. He was given 4-6 weeks to live. Well, he lived up to his Braveheart name and fought, fought, fought. He made it to 12 weeks to the day.The vet was astounded that he looked so good just a few days ago. Then, 2 nights ago, he began losing the battle. He couldn't find a comfortable sleeping position, so tried staying awake all night, propped up against the wall. Yesterday, he began falling down as his legs began giving out. This morning, he couldn't stand. DH and I tried to kind of prop him up and guide him to the door so he could go outside and potty, but his legs kept folding underneath him. I think he used his remaining strength to not have an accident in the house--and it worked.
I called our wonderful vet who had an opening at 9:30 this morning and she actually came to our house with her assistant. She confirmed that it was now time. I held Wallace's head in my hands and we made eye contact. The last thing he heard was my saying,"Good boy...we love you...God bless you." and then he was gone.
We buried him in our backyard along with his favorite toys and a can of his favorite dog food and a picture of St. Francis, patron saint of animals. Interestingly, today is the Feast Day of St. Francis.
Thank you to all of you who offered support when I initially freaked out about the news and esp. to Michele, who emailed me with so much emotional help.
Wallace will be in our hearts always.
