Update in OP! Passport probably won't be back in time - any experience?

Reach out to your local representative instead of your Senator. I just did this a few weeks ago for my daughters passport and I received it today. I was more than 2 weeks out from travel and they were happy to help me.

We received my son's passport yesterday. It was a renewal, online, in process since Jan 30th. Once I paid extra to expedite on March 31st, it went from printed to sent and delivered on April 5th!

Ds’s passport changed to approved today. It’s been exactly 4 weeks. Hopefully we get it in the mail soon

We just got home from the Miami agency at 10pm last night! I updated our journey in the OP
