Upcoming flight cancellations

It appears some people are being notified up to 3 days ahead of time, but I read a few reports from people who were notified only the night before. Neither situation is good, but less than 24 hours notice for a planned event does not seem adequate.
If they were unlucky enough to be the first folk affected on Friday that may explain it, or it has more to do with staff shortages than the reduction. I've had flights canceled even as we were fully boarded and pushed back but ran out of crew time waiting for the deicer truck... now I don't consider myself golden until we are taking off!

My sister and I are on the Dream now - boarded today. We were originally supposed to fly in to FLL yesterday. But I moved my flights to Thursday, and my sister decided to drive 10 hours. It wasn’t ideal, but we made it. Some people in our cruise Facebook group weren’t so fortunate and missed sailing.

Right now, I’m trying to enjoy my vacation and not think (too much) about whether we’ll be able to get home on our flights Wednesday. We have a one-way rental car reserved just in case.

We're flying to Sydney in late January, 2026. I'm going to keep a close eye on this airline disruption business in case we want to leave earlier to allow for delays. Don't want to miss the ship when it leaves Sydney. o_O
If the governments not open by late January you will have bigger worries than a missed cruised. Plan for the apocalypse if thats the case.

This is very smart, and a good idea even in normal air travel conditions - you can't always get one immediately when you need it if you haven't reserved one. We were stuck 9 hours from home and the airline said it would be minimum 3 days before they could get us on a flight home, and none of the rental car counters had availability (and there were a bunch of people in our situation). We ended up taking a Lyft a couple of hours away in order to get a rental car.

Just a heads-up. Reports are that Delta is very sporadic on notifying customers of cancellations. This has been my experience in the past too.

Current reports seem accurate, as a family member didn't get notice of cancellation from Delta yesterday until after the flight would have taken off. He checked the flight all morning, and it was cancelled about four hours before takeoff without an email or app notification. The cancellation may or may not have been related to the shutdown, but either way, the lack of notification is frustrating, and also not that unusual from Delta's outdated IT.

Be sure to keep an eye on your flights or even use a monitoring app. If my flight is in my Google Wallet, I often get notices of flight issues, like delays or cancellations, before I hear from Delta.

Our niece flew out PHL to MCO on Saturday. Their 9:30a NS flight was delayed but they did arrive at their hotel by 4p - right in time for check-in.
