I have a flight booked from Newark to Orlando on Friday morning for our Saturday Treasure cruise. And now we are very nervous our flight will be cancelled due to the 10% cancellations that the FAA announced this afternoon. Even if we make it to MCO without a problem Friday, I think these cancellations might create major problems for DCL and the other cruise lines. Because they might have to delay ships leaving on time to wait for passengers that booked their flights through DCL.

I feel you, we fly on Monday for our cruise on Tuesday on the Dream.

I'd take an extra day and drive if at all possible. It wouldn't be ideal, but it's definitely doable. If you do fly & get there, book a rental car for the return trip ... most will hold a car with no credit card / no cancellation, and that way you'd have it if you need it. We've needed rental cars to get home due to lengthy flight delays / cancellations - and that wasn't even during shutdowns and flight reductions.

Can you move flight up a day? drive? I'm guessing the first isn't an option because of the cancellations.

If people want to discuss the travel problems you should probably make it nonpolitical or the thread will be shut down....I think.

I don't think they delay the ships due to cancelled flights or weather problems. They most likely will just issue a refund if they booked through DCL. I'm guessing, but I bet it's a very small percentage of people that book flights through DCL.

I don't believe they HAVE to delay ships even if booking flights through DCL. I also wonder how many actually book flights through DCL.

Actually all it says is this-

"Assistance from Disney Cruise Line with flight arrangements to meet the ship in the first available port of call if unable to make your cruise due to day-of-travel airline-related flight delays or cancellations

Day-of-travel flight monitoring and assistance from Disney Cruise Line in case of any airline-related flight delays or cancellations"

They aren't going to hold ships beyond a certain point but they would fly those few impacted passengers to met the ship.

Knowing your air passenger rights is also important too… Canada, UK and Schengen countries especially…

Do they have that still? It has been reported that all that was axed here lately through the current administration.
(at least for us here in the US)

Unfortunately they only apply to things that the airlines control. Scheduling, crew availability etc. if the FAA shuts down airspace there is nothing an airline can do to change it.

It doesn't pertain to things out of the airlines control and it never has.

The affected include Newark (EWR), JFK, LaGuardia (LGA), Los Angeles (LAX), Atlanta (ATL), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Miami (MIA), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Houston (IAH, HOU) and Washington DC area (DCA, IAD, BWI).

San Francisco (SFO), Boston (BOS), Seattle (SEA), Denver (DEN), Orlando (MCO) and Salt Lake City (SLC) were also noted in the FAA alert.

I thought it was going to be 40 cities, but it doesn't really matter because flights cancelled coming into a city means flights cancelled going out of a city.

And those are most of the big hubs, anyway, so anyone with a layover going through one of those cities is also affected. And then airplanes and crew will be in the wrong place, so that will delay or cancel more flights. It's a big cascade of bad times. This is a big problem.

Slight correction, its EU / EEA not just Schengen. Any flight on any airline which originates from or is going to any EU / EEA country is covered by the EU Regulation 261/2004. It covers all passengers on the plane regardless of nationality or citizenship.

https://www.citizensinformation.ie/...pensation-for-overbooked-and-delayed-flights/

If a transatlantic flight is cancelled, automatically entitled to €600 / $600 per passenger
The airline must pay for hotel accommodation
The airline must rebook at no extra cost for next available flight

I think the full list is coming out sometime today. If the 40 with highest passenger volume are affected, it will include MCO and FLL.

It will be a mess. I would be searching for alternatives. I don't book my flights through DCL for domestic travel (when I cruise out of Florida etc.), but internationally I have. They can't change much if there is no flight to get you there. Most they can do is refund your current flight or try and find you another one in time for your cruise. They won't be holding up departure on the ship if your flight is late arriving by hours due to what is about to happen with the FAA.

Here is the list:
Anchorage International (ANC), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL), Boston Logan International (BOS)
Baltimore/Washington International (BWI), Charlotte Douglas International (CLT)
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International (CVG), Dallas Love (DAL)
Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA), Denver International (DEN)
Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW)
Newark Liberty International (EWR), Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International (FLL)
Honolulu International (HNL), Houston Hobby (HOU), Washington Dulles International (IAD)
George Bush Houston Intercontinental (IAH), Indianapolis International (IND)
New York John F Kennedy International (JFK), Las Vegas Harry Reid International (LAS)
Los Angeles International (LAX), New York LaGuardia (LGA), Orlando International (MCO)
Chicago Midway (MDW), Memphis International (MEM), Miami International (MIA)
Minneapolis/St Paul International (MSP), Oakland International (OAK), Ontario International (ONT)
Chicago O`Hare International (ORD), Portland International (PDX), Philadelphia International (PHL)
Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX), San Diego International (SAN), Louisville International (SDF)
Seattle/Tacoma International (SEA), San Francisco International (SFO), Salt Lake City International (SLC)
Teterboro (TEB), Tampa International (TPA)

EC 261 will NOT cover non European based airlines (United, American, Jet Blue, etc. ) flying TO the EU.

It will cover flights on any airline flying FROM the EU.

It will not cover connecting flights through the EU such as Newark - Frankfurt - Cape Town.

From “One Mile at A Time”

If you’re looking for compensation through EC261, you’re entitled to that for any delay or cancelation that isn’t due to “extraordinary circumstances.” The issue is that this can be a bit of a gray area, and airlines have been known to play games. That’s because what constitutes “extraordinary circumstances” isn’t explicitly defined.

  • Weather delays, air traffic control delays, delays due to strikes outside the airline, delays due to political instability, diversions due to medical issues or unruly passengers, etc., would be considered extraordinary circumstances, so EC261 compensation wouldn’t apply”
I am thinking “air traffic control delays” or “strikes outside the airline” might negate compensation in this case. Certainly “Extraordinary Circumstances”.
