I saw at Wal-mart yesterday that UP! is now available on DVD.

It will be the first of the Pixars that I didn't buy. Though Nemo was close. And Cars disappointed on the small screen- not really a great story, but the scenery on the big screen was breathtaking!

Last night, however, much to my delight, I figured out how to make UP! into a decent movie!!!

There is about a ten minute bit in the beginning showing Carl's whole history with his wife? Just remove it. Totally. Will improve the movie quantitatively! Maybe stick it in somewhere else, but maybe not...

That part is great in and of itself; in fact, it is a much better movie than the rest of the movie! But it is totally counter-productive to the rest of the movie: totally different pacing and feel, and after it, the rest of the movie is slow and dull and irrelevant.

Of course, this still can't help the unbelievably pathetic scenic visuals that have no excuse after what was done in Cars.

But I am excited enough about this that I might go buy a copy afterall.

To do my own edit.

I totally disagree. The first 10 minutes of the movie set it up for the rest. I assume you would take out the end of Marley and Me too?

Sorry, I have to disagree, too. Without the beginning, how would you know that Up is a love story? Carl wouldn't have the drive and determination if not for Ellie. Everything he does, he does for her. :lovestruc

Dh bought it for the girls on Wednesday, and we've already watched it three times. It's such a beautiful story. :cloud9:

I have to disagree, too. I loved UP! It was so nice to see an animated film from an adult point of view. I knew I'd buy it before I left the theater. And the UP! characters were the only ones I waited in line to get a picture with!

And I believe that cutting out the beginning of UP! would make the rest of the film unintelligible and irrelevant. People are the sum total of their experiences. Leave those major experiences out and you have no understanding of Carl or why he's doing what he's doing. I would not have been able to suspend my disbelief if I hadn't seen the beginning.

Nemo's also one of my favorites; didn't like Cars at all.

But that's why they make different movies for different audiences.

I wouldn't change a minute of Up. Such a great story. I loved Nemo, and Cars too. The only Pixar film I didn't love was Wall-e. I actually fell asleep in the middle of that one while watching at the movie theater.

I TOTALLY disagree.

The sequence of Carl's backstory was essential to understand why he does what he does during the rest of the movie. Why he uses balloons to make his "escape". Why he goes to Paradise Falls and why he searches for Charles Muntz. Why he reacts to Russell the way he does. And why Ellie's book means so much to him.

And, for what it is worth, the 2 minutes or so of the completely dialogue-free scenes from Carl and Ellie's marriage moved me to a sobbing mess, and had more emotional impact than most anything I've seen lately.

The opening story is so heartwarming and really sets the stage for the rest of the movie. When I watched it, I was in tears because it reminds me so much of my grandparents, and my grandmother passed away just a few months before Up came out. Up is just so awesome, probably my favorite Pixar movie now.

Count me in as another one who disagrees. I wouldn't change a thing with this one.

UP is one of the best Disney/Pixar movies ever!! We absolutely loved it when we went to see at the theater and I immediatley bought it this week when it came out in DVD. It is a very heartwarming and touching story.

The beginning is about the importance of everyday life and how it goes by much too quickly. It is sad and moving but necessary to make the movie what it is instead of a story about simply chasing a runaway house.

I"m with the rest of the pp's so far.... I enjoyed all the movies you mentioned.

Add me to the disagreeing bunch; I loved that movie and my DD even bought it with her own birthday money, so that her grandparents could watch it and see how awesome it was. :thumbsup2

I know that the Blu-Ray edition of Up has an entire section devoted to the opening story along with an alternate version. I'm glad that they didn't use the original concept for the Carl and Ellie's relationship because the one that ended up in the final cut was far and above the better choice.

The story is timeless. The voice casting is superb. And the animation is outstanding. I know that I will enjoy this movie for years to come.

I agree about removing the first ten minutes of UP! I also think that The Wizard of Oz should be edited to remove the silly black and white scenes at the beginning of the movie; have it start with Dorothy saying "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore". Straight and to the point!

True (I'm told) story: back in the 1960s "The Sound of Music" was going to be shown at a theater in South Korea. The theater manager thought the film too long, so he shortened it by removing all the songs!

I loved Up! and would not change any of it for a minute. I agree that it is sad but life is sad at times. With the opening you get to understand why he is doing the things he is doing throughout the whole movie.

I am itching to see it again and my mom got it at the Disney Store through preorder but has deemed it Christmas only.

Edit movies? Ummmm, ok. :sad2:

Just watch your own home movies. I'm sure they meet with your standards better.

I don't think movies should be edited personally. They are what they are.

Now I did think Up dragged a bit in one area but it wasn't because of the opening part. It seemed to go on and on, YMMV.

By the way, I loved the dog - what was his name? The original love story and that dog made the movie for me.

I have to respectfully disagree about cutting out that first 10 minutes of the movie that focus on the relationship between Carl and Ellie.

I think the beginning of UP is brilliant. Brilliant!

I saw the movie twice, once in the theatre and once on dvd, and the beginning of the movie moved me to tears both times. The passion Carl has for keeping Ellie in his heart is set up during the beginning of the movie and that same passion motivates him for nearly everything he does in the rest of the movie. The story of their lives from beginning to end is one that grabbed me.

I am amazed that Pixar can pull heartstrings with such force by using so few words.

I enjoyed the comic side of UP, too. Squirrel! :rotfl:

I haven't met a Pixar movie yet that I didn't enjoy. :goodvibes
