OK, I'll try to make this as detailed as possible with the limited time I have. We (DW, DD 13, DS 11, and I) arrived at MCO on-time Jan. 31st around 9:20 PM. Flights on Delta were good. Picked up car from National Emerald Aisle (Dodge Stratus) and headed for the Bee Line. Arrived at Comfort Suites Universal, checked in, went to TGI Fridays for late dinner, then back to CS for a little sleep.
Awoke early Saturday morning and arrived at PBH at 7:30 AM. Initial impression for all was "Oh my God, we're staying here??". Could not believe we had gotten a room for $170 on the Entertainment rate. Went in to get key cards. The wonderful woman at the reception desk (her name tag said DJ) was extremely attentive. When I gave her my name and asked her if we could pre-check in, she said, "We have a room all ready for you now, Mr. Borden". I almost fell over. I had never had any hotel offer a room that early in the day, particularly at a high-end resort. She never checked for our Entertainment card either. We decided to use the valet parking, the bellboy immediately loaded our bags from the car and we were in the room by 8:00 AM. We were in the west wing, bayview room 4367. The room was very large, the bathroom was huge, and the view was incredible. Beds are so comfortable, I slept like a baby the whole time. We quickly unpacked our park things, packed the sandles and towel in a small bag, and headed for the boat dock. Boat service was very prompt and convenient. Never waited more than 10 minutes the whole trip.
We arrived at IOA, got our tickets from the eticket booth, got our Preferred AP's (buy one, get 2nd at half price), and headed for the Hulk. Just as we reached the loading area, DD started to cry hysterically and said "I don't want to do this!!". She is afraid of heights and the look up the launch tube made her hysterical. My DW took her back down the entrance ramp while son and I loaded up. Since I have a middle ear problem, I had taken Bonine the night before and that morning. Unfortunately, it didn't work on the Hulk :( . By the time the ride ended, I was all nautious and that was the end of the big roller coasters for me this trip. The rest of the day was great. Mythos was wonderful as always, did all the rides multiple times, and the supposed "cold weather" (71 degrees) felt great to us.
Upon return to PBH, went to Mama Della's for dinner. The food was incredible, as was the service, and Mama came over and spent quite a bit of time with us.
While showering the next morning, I really started to dread the idea of checking out and having to drive over to Tampa that night. On a whim, I called the front desk and asked if there was any chance we could stay another night at the $170 rate. They immediately said "No problem. Just bring down your key cards and we'll issue new ones". The kids and DW were jumping around like we had just won the lottery when I told them!! We decided to go to USF at opening and did everything at least once by 2:00PM (FOTL is great!!). Went back to PBH, put on the bathing suits and headed around the corner to the beach pool. This is definitely the nicest hotel pool we had ever seen. The kids absolutely loved the "castle" slide, the service from the bar was wonderful (she was cute too), and the staff keeps the area very clean and organized. My DW and I felt so relaxed. We hadn't had a relaxing time like that since our Norwegian cruise last summer. Kids wanted to do Citywalk that night, so we headed over to Nascar Cafe for dinner (DS's choice) and drinks at Margharitaville (DD's choice). Good time was had by all.
Monday the parks were virtually empty!! We did the checkout process (they only charged me two days for valet parking), had them put the bags in storage, and headed out. We did Studios in the morning then headed back to IOA for the rest of the day. We did Dudley three times, Jurassic twice, and Bilge Rat Barges twice. Weather was really beautiful. We also finally got to see Sinbad and I got a great videotape of the entire show. Last thing we did was son going on Hulk twice in the front row while DW and DD did Storm Force and I took more pics and video. We ate dinner again at Mama's, got the car and said a sad farewell to PBH. The trip to Tampa was real quiet and the arrival at the Comfort Inn was really disappointing after our three days at PBH.
I'll be posting pics on my website in a day or two for those who are interested. We've already started to make plans for the next trip to UO and PBH in November.

Glad you had such a great time! That's really great about them letting you have the room for another night at the EC rate!

Thanks for posting! We'll be heading down to Universal 2 weeks from today for the first time, and staying at PBH. It's sounds like the hotel is wonderful! Glad you had a great time!

Hi Dave and Welcome Back! Thank you for the trip report. I always enjoy reading about everyones trips. Portofino is a gem! How nice to have a room ready to check into so early. We'll be back in March and I cant wait to sleep on those beds they are so comfortable. Are you a Loews member? Your daughter and I would get along fine...I reacted in a similar fashion when riding Hulk :p You ate at Mama's twice! Great food! Sounds like a wonderful time was had by all:) Thanks for all the details!

Jessica;
We sent for the Loews Blue card before this trip. When we got back to the room Saturday evening, there were the cookies and milk for the kids. They really loved it!
And, yes, we ate at Mamas twice. DD, DW and I all ordered Veal Cutlet Parmagian (sp?). I figured they'd bring out a plate with three cutlets and some pasta. They then brought out a huge platter with six of the biggest veal cutlets I had ever seen and a huge mound of angle hair pasta. What a meal!! What a deal!! We paid less for the four of us than DW and I paid for just two at Emeril's last trip.

Thanks for the trip report Dave. Now I really can't wait for our trip in June. You've made PBH sound so wonderful. Glad we made our ressies there. Did you find it difficult navigating the property as some have mentioned? It sounds really huge. Thanks again!!

Dave, I'm glad to hear you liked Mama Della's. I really want to try it, and it'll give us a chance to see Portofino, since we'll be staying at Royal Pacific.
These trip reports really keep the fires burning while waiting!

Julie;
We found navigating pretty easy with the map they give you at check-in. Plus, we were right around the corner from the Beach Pool and the boat dock was practically out our window, so that made life alot easier. I think next trip we may do more resort exploring since we'll have more time.

Aisling;
Absolutely try Mamas. The food is great and the service is even better.
The boat ride from RP to PBH via Citywalk is pretty easy and you also get to go by HRH on the way to PBH. I took a video of one complete round trip from PBH to Citywalk and back and it came out great.

Great report, ksdave!

How AWESOME you were able to get the Ent Rate for an additiional day! I guess staying at the end of January beats the beginning by a long shot!

Sorry the bonine didn't work... :( .. the Hulk is so awesome!

Welcome back, guy. I like seeing your signature and your warm smile!

Robin;
We definitely picked the right weekend. Longest wait we saw the "regular" people on was 15 minutes for Spidey and Hulk on Saturday. I thought the Hulk would be alot more crowded with Dueling Dragons closed, but it wasn't bad at all. Our longest wait was about three minutes :p .
My wife awoke early on Monday and she counted the number of newspapers in front of rooms at PBH on our floor. Out of 40 rooms, there were only 12 newspapers. THAT is really empty for a great hotel like PBH.

what a great report!! Thanks Dave. PBH is just an amzing resort! Beats any I've ever stayed in. Sounds like a fun time was had by all.
Welcome back

I hate to say it Dave but I told you so.LOl It's it wonderful! It's so breathtaking when you arrive and hearing you basically say how awesome it was at first site just brings back that memory and makes me want to plan a trip. I'm thinking labor day for me and dh and the holidays for the kids and us. I'm so happy you enjoyed mama's and PBH just so relaxing and really "feels" like your on vacation from your vacation. Wonderful report and i'm glad to see you back safely.

Party;
I enjoyed Mama's so well I just went again Thursday! I had another last minute business trip to MCO. I flew in Thursday, was at the gates to Studios by 5:30 PM and was able to do Twister, Earthquake, Jaws and MIB before closing at 7PM. I then rode the boat over to PBH and had dinner at Mama's. Felt a little wierd eating there by myself, but the food and service more than made up for it.
I'm hoping my boss sends me down again soon ;) .

Dave, you lucky dog!! Tell me...what did ya eat?

The Veal Cutlet again. For some reason, we cannot find it out here in Kansas. We've tried all the local grocers, plus Super Wal Mart, etc. Unfortunately, we do not have meat markets here like we did back in NY. Anyway, the whole meal was wonderful again. I love their salad (with Mama's secret dressing), the bread and breadsticks they give you, and the Cappuccino for desert.

Dave,
Thanks for the great trip report! I noticed that you said you are going back in November and your dates are right around the time we're thinking of going. Can you please tell me (if you're made your ressies already, that is), what your rate is and which resort you're staying at? I would love to stay at either the HRH or PBH if possible!
Thanks!
Nicole

Do you need reservations for Mama's? We are going in early April and staying at PBH. I assume reservations are needed for Delfino Riviera? Can we wait and make reservations when we arrive or call ahead? Thanks.

Nanci

Hi ksdave, I had a questions about the Portofino. We only plan on staying there for 1 night before we go to Disney. We are going to Seaworld on our first day there, so I figured I would stay in a hotel that was in that area (I know it would be better to stay at one right at Seaworld - but, the Portofino looked so great that I really wanted to try it).

We will then go on to Disney for 6 days. My question is - we weren't planning on going to Universal at all - the last time we were there was in 1998 - do you think we would regret not going there and do you think the Portofino is so great that we should stay an extra night and cut one from Disney???? I know this is a matter of opinion, but????

I have 2 girls (10 & 14) - one like rides and the other doesn't.

Not dave here but might can help answer your questions:

Nanci~ Yes you would be advised to call ahead at mama della's it books up fast. You might could get in but may not get a desirable time for your family if you wait till you arrive. Call concierge and she will hook you up with ressies you will absoultley love it!

Mer~ I have 2.5 yo triplets and 10 yo and they all love PBH and US/IOA my 10 loves IOA she could live there. She loves all the rides and it's to the point she does'nt care anything about Dinsey so I recommend you add a day to your stay and enjoy! I love PBH and you and your wife well not want to leave. It's a 3 day hotel minuimum. They pamper you and cater to you and it's just magical to be there and breathe the air.
