My 1 month sabbatical begins July 25th at the World..split stay...i have been there so much since my kids were born i could plan in my sleep...
But after I am driving west...n'awlins...fort worth to see yankees rangers (go bombers) ...grand canyon..and then Disneyland. Just me and my 9 year old.
Booked 2 days park hoppers...and marriott courtyard theme park (which looks awesome)..and now am a deer in headlights.
Doing Disneyland to start day 1 and DCA to start day 2..
Will watch some YouTube videos....you folks are experts so any advice you can give...food...rope drop strategies..would be truly appreciated. Thanks!

How exciting! When will you be at Disneyland?

Frequently discussed differences between WDW and DLR.
  • Disneyland uses the Disneyland app, not MDE
  • Disneyland is open most days from 8 am - midnight. DCA is generally open from 8am - 10 pm.
  • You can start park hopping at 11 am.
  • LLMP and LLSP work differently at Disneyland. At Disneyland, it is more like WDW's old Genie+ system. You can't book your first LLMP attraction until you pass through the turnstiles. There are several threads with strategies. If you are interested, I will find links to them.
  • There are two LLSP attractions - Rise of the Resistance in DL and Radiator Springs Racers in DCA. LLSP are usually available to book within 15-30 min of the time that you want to ride. Rise is virtually identical to WDW. RSR is unique. RSR has a very efficient single rider line. If your 9 year old is confident riding alone, that is a great way to save time
  • Disneyland uses Magic Band +, not the earlier versions. MB+ is good for entering the park, LL tap ins, PhotoPass photographers, and a few interactive features throughout the parks. It does not automatically detect ride photos. To save your ride photo, you need to find the photo on the kiosk wall as you exit the ride. Snap a picture of your photo so that you have the code. Enter the code into your app to upload the photo.

Below is BrianL's list of differences between WDW and DLR. @BrianL have you made any changes?

DL Exclusive Attractions:
Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye (uses same ride system as DINOSAUR at AK)
Snow White's Enchanted Wish
Pinocchio's Daring Journey
Mister Toad's Wild Ride
Casey Jr. Circus Train
Storybook Land Canal Boats
Alice in Wonderland
Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough
Roger Rabbit's Car-Toon Spin
Chip & Dale's Gadget Coaster
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
The Matterhorn (note this uses the same ride system as Space Mountain at MK)
Space Mountain (same theme but completely different ride)

DL Similar but not exactly the same:
Enchanted Tiki Room - longer show
Pirates of the Caribbean - longer with more show scenes
Haunted Mansion - even without the Nightmare overlay it is slightly different
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Big Thunder Mountain - some additional effects and scenery
Autopia - much longer than the Tomorrowland Speedway, but basically the same
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters - removable laser blasters make it a little better

DL Exactly (or basically) the same:
Peter Pan's Flight - technically some minor differences
Dumbo
King Aruthur Carousel
Milennium Falcon: Smugglers Run - all of Galaxy's Edge is practically identical
Rise of the Resistance
Mad Tea Party
Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway - The queue is very different and cool
Star Tours
Astro Orbitor - though at ground level

CA Exclusive Attractions:
Monsters Inc. Mike & Sully to the Rescue
Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout - based on Tower of Terror, though the DL version works a little differently
WEB Slingers
Radiator Springs Racers - this is like a massively bigger Test Track
Luigi's Rollicking Roadsters
Incredicoaster
Inside-Out Emotional Whirlwind
Silly Symphony Swings - though this is an off-the shelf "wave swinger" ride
Jumpin' Jellyfish
Golden Zephyr
Goofy's Sky School

CA Similar but not exactly the same:
Mater's Junkyard Jamboree - the same as Alien Swirling Saucers
Grizzly River Run - longer version of Kali River Rapids - definitely a wet ride!

CA Exactly (or basically) the same:
Mickey's Philharmagic! - smaller screen though
Turtle Talk with Crush
Ariel's Undersea Adventure - same as Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid
Jessie's Critter Carousel
Soarin'

Brian L made this list before Tiana's opened at Disneyland. I would put that in the "similar but not exactly the same" category. It is a very wet ride - more wet than WDW. Make sure you have shoe coverings and a poncho.

This is incredible thank you. Park reservations are August 9 and 10. Given our limited time might just snack and quick service but it appears the Blue Bayou is the one reservation to try to get. Also didn't get Lightning lanes and hope i dont regret that. Your response was very thoughtful thank-you so much.

I have been doing solo visits to Disneyland California for many years, my trip reports are in my signature.

One thing to note is that Disneyland California is a locals park and crowd patterns are very different to Florida. The golden hours are from park opening to about 12pm. Locals start arriving from lunch time to early evening.

Lightening Lanes also have different crowd patterns. Locals dont buy them, they will wait in the long standby queue or come back another day. Therefore Lightening Lanes, both the included and extra charge dont sell out like they do in Florida, even Rise of The Resistance can still be bought in the afternoon.

Thank you! I'm not OP but planning my first trip too so this is helpful.

Just a call out- There is no ride similar to Jessie's Critter Carousel at WDW. Unless you just mean the fact that it's a carousel in general. The only carousel currently at WDW is Prince Charming's.

RIght - the meaning is that it's a carousel and compares to the MK one. Some rides are comparable to more than one, like Dumbo, Astro-Orbiter, Flying Carpets, the former Tricera-Top Spin - all of those are basically the same thing.

Head in early to Disneyland. Catch a couple rides. Mobile order the Breakfast Burrito from the Galactic Grill. It will feed both of you and not take up much time. They are awesome.

How do we get the attention of a DISboards moderator to get that information pinned to the top of the DL forum? Actually, I think it would be good to have two pinned threads: ride differences and procedural (Lightning Lane, MagicBand, park reservations) differences.

I asked about the hotel super threads and if they can either update the first post or allow someone else to take it over. I tried contacting them via flagging the first post as well as by tagging @WebmasterCorey on the technical support board. I never received a response.

When you have a cleaned up version, send it to me. I have the old one bookmarked so keep using that.

For the cleaned up version, Soarin is only Soarin over California during the Food & Wine Festival.
