unusual noise levels?

We just returned from a week at OKW where we stayed in a 2 bd. Granted, this week was very busy---the resort was completely booked. This was our second trip to OKW. Both times we stayed in a 2 bd second floor. On our first trip we barely heard the neighbors. In fact, I don't know if we had anyone staying above us. On this trip, quite the contrary. Whenever the people above us returned it sounded as if their kids thought they were still at the parks. I swear they were bouncing on the beds and running around like the room was on fire. Slamming doors. Screaming. In the mornings someone felt the need to walk around on the tiled floors with heels on.

Now, having lived in apartments for over 20 years of my life I realize that close quartered living comes with it's downsides. However, this noise level got to be almost intolerable. I didn't say anything because it generally stopped at around 10:00 PM (but started in the morning around 6:00). Should I have?

Is this just something we should live with? Comes with the territory? Are some buildings more solidly built than others? Are people on the top floors oblivious to noise levels because they don't hear it from above?

We usually request top floor. On the occassions that we haven't gotten this, I've never had a problem with noise from the upper units.

I'm sorry to hear this. It's amazing how inconsiderate people can be.

I've always been very sensitive to this. I won't run the jacuzzi after 10:00pm, and we always, always remove our shoes in the unit.

If I could only do something about those atomic toilets!;)

I don't know the answers to all your questions but it is the reason we always request top floor. I suppose if we brought our grandchildren, we would request first floor.

WOW!!!!
Noise at OKW???
Acording to some people on these boards that kind of stuff only goes on at BWV.
I feel for you. It wouldn't have bothered me in the least at 10 PM but the 6 AM would have drove me crazy.

Yea, we are, too. I had to remind my 7 year old DS many times to not run around the room because we have neighbors. And we only ran the washer and dryer during the early evening. My guess is that people who aren't used to living in apartments or condo's don't realize how their noise travels. Oh well...guess I'll start requesting top level has my first priority :smooth:

I think this is exactly the problem....and of course there are also those who just don't care who they are disturbing. Hopefully, there are more considerate folk like the ones who have posted here.

I ultimately attributed it to the room being rented to one of the unwashed masses (read:a non-DVC member), as I assumed that certainly one of my fellow DVC members would not be that insensitive or inconsiderate. (sigh)

dmadman43,

We had the same problem last week at OKW. We always request top floor, but this time we brought in-laws who are 76-77 yrs old. So we requested bottom floor- 2BR lock-off. Our first couple nights no problem, after that it seemed like there were cattle running above our heads:( . Several times I got a broom and pounded on the ceiling above us, to let them know it wasn't appreciated:D . People these days seem to not have any "common sense" with their children.
My theory is to let the guilty "noisy neighbors" know how loud they are or they will only get worse and louder!:D

dmadman we were in bldg 14, across from HH. What bldg were you in?

As a new parent I have a list of things I say I will or won't ever do. I know that will come back to haunt me.

One promise I intend to stick to is my kids will NEVER run up and down hotel coridors screaming. That also goes for behaviors inside the room. It can be difficult to keep the excitment level down for kids at Disney, but hey take them outside and let them blow of steam. They do need to relax some, or at least the adults do.

We will see, my baby is only 10 months old now. Ask me again in 10 years how much I was able to control this and I may give a different answer. (but I promise all my DVC niebors it won't be my kid(s) driving them crazy!!!!

Now, let me say we certainly weren't without sin during the week. A rough night of food poisoning that befell my DD, DS, and myself (from McDonald's near Blizzard Beach, thank you) certainly must have made for a long evening for those below us, for which we were deeply sorry for the unintented inconvenience. We offered our apologies.

I can understand and forgive the occasional outbursts--kids will be kids (and adults will be adults after a long evening at Pleasure Island :jester: ). And babies?..well, what can you do? They only know few ways of communicating. It's the daily, consistent behavior that apparently goes unmonitored I find too much.

Unfortunately, I think those of us who worry about the amount of noise we create are in the minority. Almost every trip I have had to listen to kids running down the hallway and screaming with their parents trailing behind oblivious or not caring. And don't get me started about people slamming doors. It really isn't that much harder to close a door quietly.

I always thought it was basic manners to be mindful of your neighbors, but I'm afraid that isn't the case in today's "me" centered society.

DH and I experienced a similar problem at the Polynesian last May. Our room had a "lock-off" door, and our neighbors had a toddler who would begin screaming every night around 3-4am. I think the "lock-off" door made things even worse (perhaps not as sound-proof as a solid wall?).

One night it went on for so long, that I got up and put my ear to the "lock-off" door. I did not hear any movement in the room...no sounds of any adult moving around or attempting to calm the child down. Part of me wondered if the child was in there alone. I called the front desk, and they said they would send someone up right away. The child did eventually calm down. I'm not sure if the front desk ever sent someone...I never heard a knock at their door, or any conversation.

P.S. DisneyPhD - I agree...it will always be Dixie Landings to me!
