Unusal Names for Children

She isn't a kid any longer :) but I had a friend when I was in 7th grade whose name was T'lane (Tulane)- her family was featured in a baby name book (after I knew here lol) she had siblings named: Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Loyola, Yale (and I'm forgetting the others)

funny thing is she actually later attended her namesake on scholarship and was the first of her siblings to attend/complete their college.

My sister worked in an optometrist's office and had a young patient named Pajama (pronounced Pah shjah may)

And my former sister in law had a student whose name I can't type on the board- it was pronounced Ash whole ay =she had to change her habbit of writing the names of her students on the board so she wouldn't get into trouble for having a bad word on her board if the girl had been naughty.

I had two girls in my GS troop who were Treyona and Treyshona (not twins) and the rest of the kids were Trey, Treycie, and Treylynne

I had a friend in college named Pepper

And I have cousins named Armont, Conway, Lori (boy), and Scooter- their rather normal named sisters were Marsha and Sheryl

Two of my good friends have little boys both are named Landyn - I had not heard that name until I met the two- one of the poor boys has the middle name of Birdell (pronounced Bur Dale)

WooHoo my favorite topic:banana:

DD12 Forrest Mary Martha
DD8 ElsaCraig Marie
DS6 Gregor Navarre Lazarus
DD5 Guienevere Vivian maria
DS2 Tucker Kristoff Lee

All of these are real names not made up. They are very old.

On ElsaCraig we went with the easier spelling the traditional spellling started with and A. After a small Island off of Scotland.

I get strange looks sometimes.

My girls are both named for places (family tradition)..Remy Kaelynn and Holland Elisabeth. Holly's middle name is normal except the spelling..I used the S because I hate writing cursive Z LOL. DH and I have a rule that I name all girls and he names all boys (with the power of a single veto). If we had a boy he'd be Conner Adrien (for the Highlander movies :sad2: and his initials would spell out CAS which DH said is some kind of bomb thing he works with). My next girl name was going to be Calais, London, Milan or Marseille which is why DH says he can't risk having another girls LOL..he's kidding, I think..

I avoided names with a lower case k, because at school we use d'nealean and I do not like the way it looks, I also avoided boys names that could be shortened. My DH is David, and I hate when people assume they can call him Dave.

I forgot about names from my family...

My grandmother was Euralie (pronounced Your a Lee) Mable -she went as Mable

My other Grandmother was Naomi Nell (she also went by her middle name)

My first grandmother and 10 brothers and sisters and although I will not get all the names here...

there were twins- Lilly (but her nickname was coon) and Lelia (pronounced Lee yah)
Another sister Lydia (pronounced Lead yah)
a brother BurniseLee
a sister Authorine (pronounced Arthur een)
The rest of the names escape me...

My grandfather was Jack Daniels (lol)

and my other Grandfather was Bruner until he was in the millitary and they apparently changed it to Bruno the story was that the millitary didn't make mistakes and he was to accept the name how it was typed on his forms and deal with it...

Ok those are all I can think of for now... I'm sure that I will think of one or two later though...

My coworker is 27 and she has a two year old daughter named Thankful. I think unusual names are a lot more common than "regular" names nowadays. I had a million Jacob's and Michelle's in my classes when I was growing up but I don't know one person (personally) that has named their kid a traditional name.

Our newest grand in my siggie pic is our sweet 'Orion Zachary'. DS and DIL chose to name him 'Orion', after the constellation, which held special meaning as they were seperated a year by war and could see Orion from Iraq to MD. At first I felt it was very unusual, but knowing the meaning, I think it is very special. If the kids give him a hard time in school he can use his cool initials OZ!! :goodvibes

My daughter's name is Stevie Faith......
most people don't like it, but we love it.:cloud9:

I love the unique name 'Stevie Faith' and your special meaning behind the name. A beautiful name for a beautiful baby! It's not all that unusual to me as I am old enough to remember the all time great music legend Stevie Nicks! :goodvibes

My Wife and I named our son KYLE, at the time (1986) we never heard of it before but it seems like a pretty popular name now:upsidedow

My DS Rendle
My DD Bryn

DD's teacher's daughter - Trinity

I have a couple of friends with unusual names: Saloma & Lyr'cea (Luur say ya)

DS is Elias which took our relatives 6 months to figure out. In fact, at Thanksgiving, DH's Uncle said "So his name is Elijah, like the prophet?" Uh NO! We call him Eli so I guess that could be part of the confusion.

DD is Avery which I got from Jerry Maguire and the only time I heard it. I am hearing it more and more lately. It is making it's way up the baby name popularity charts as well. As long as it doesn't get to be like Jennifer it will be fine. LOL!

I spent my entire childhood searching for my name on pens, mugs, stickers, stationary, etc. and I never found a thing. I never once met another person named "Ava", although people would occasionally tell me that had an aunt or cousin or friend with the name. Suddenly, Ava is the #1 most popular name in the U.S. for 2006 and I'm constantly hearing the name in reference to these little ankle-biters everywhere.

That is such a lovely story behind little Orion's name.:cloud9: I will always think Stevie is the greatest name in the world because she was named after the GREATEST man in the world....my irreplaceable and phenomenal Dad...Stephen.

Although we are Mexican by blood we posses an Italian last name, we named our boy "Dario", it goes really good with our last name.
