I wish Disney would work with a local charity to donate unopened new food items that are left behind by DVCrs.
Every time we use DVC we leave behind excess food items.

There must be a food pantry in the area that would love to have donations.

I'll just say the one nasty (unfortunately) word -- liability. Sealed or not, who knows anymore.

This would be perfect! I always just leave things hoping the housekeeping staff can use them.

I don't see how there is any more liability than any other food drive.
Most food pantry's receive their food from donations.

What I have done and I have received from someone else doing:
On checkout day, go to the front desk, find someone checking in, and offer the items to them.

I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a food pantry to take your leftovers.

But I don't see Disney setting up a way to take care of it for you.

I was suggesting that perhaps they could work with a local food pantry. And have them come and pick up accumulated canned and packaged goods.
I wi do hat I always do and leave for the housekeepers.

I wonder how many people actually have leftover food. We drive so whatever is leftover, we take with us.

If I had a bunch of leftovers that I couldn't take with me, I would contact a local food bank and ask if they wanted to come and get it.

We fly to WDW & we usually have some leftovers that we can't pack - usually some drinks.
It kills me to waste food.
Not sure about this, but I believe the housekeepers aren't allowed to take the leftovers.

That would require a daily pick up from each resort by the food pantry. Disney doesn't have room to store extras.

We have always offered drinks etc to Bell Services when they come to help with our luggage. They have gratefully taken them, then and there.

There is a Facebook group called DVC Leftovers. People post items they have on checkout day.

I used to be in that group but left because there were more people on there begging for free stuff, than people actually giving stuff away. It got really annoying.

If we have unopened water, soda, etc, I offer them to families in the resort.

Mousekeeping told me they happily accept all unopened drinks, even beer.:)

I just watched some videos from a former Mousekeeper, and she mentioned they weren't allowed to take alcohol. Maybe because she wasn't old enough, but I'm not sure. I think the videos were posted on the Disney resort board.

Perhaps, I'm just going by what I was told...will still will leave, what happens at disney stays at disney. Have a feeling it doesn't go to waste lol.

I was thinking about this this morning, and I think one of the main reasons Disney probably wouldn't ever do this is because it would ruin the 'show'. The last thing Disney wants you thinking about in their perfect magical kingdom is that some people don't even have enough food to eat that day. Real world problems don't exist in disney. A donation box would ruin that illusion.

Nope. It's liability and the fact it would just be a waste of resources. Look. I've worked housekeeping before. You really have not got space to carry stuff with you. Either it goes in the garbage, in the storage closet, or back to the break room. If, say, someone left a few unopened bottles of Gatorade, and I carried it back to the break room, that would be my own effort. But my supervisor isn't going to tell me to waste time lugging every bottle of Gatorade to a designated spot. Even recycling isn't a popular idea. People wonder why more resorts/businesses don't recycle and it's because it takes extra time, extra manpower to sort and dispose of the recycling properly. Guests aren't all that likely to properly sort recycling in their room and they are less likely to care their spares down to that box.

Other guests are really the most likely people to want your hand offs. I'm not saying crew won't take a few cold cokes or appreciate the rare beer or gourmet snacks. But I'll bet you most of the left behind DVC stuff gets swept into the garbage because that housekeeping crew is sweeping through in the most expedient way. They don't want extra work, they're hoping they don't find stuff they've got to write up and turn in.

Oh I agree. We've left alcohol before for sure. When we are packing up and cleaning our mess, I'm always torn between leaving leftovers or throwing them out. I don't want to leave extra work for them to clean if they don't want the stuff. Still I will leave unopened items and throw the rest out. I have asked at the front desk of a resort (not Disney) and they told me to leave all leftovers for housekeepers.
