I would definitely recommend picking up the book for additional source information. I absolutely believe this forum gives the best and most up to date information but it is a handy reference. And we can't always have our computers on hand so it makes for a quick pick up read.

One recommendation, in my opinion, already saved me the $16 I paid for the book. My DS2 has a baseball hat he has been wearing nearly his whole life. If we lost it, it would be over for us. I read a tip that recommended buying a clip that goes from the hat to a shirt or jacket. I never even thought of this and plan to buy one tomorrow!

You never know what info might apply to you or your family.

recomendation seconded - I found this book really useful last year and am finding it equally useful in planning my second trip in December :thumbsup2

I have to agree...I read the UG every year, even when I'm not planning a trip! Even my Dad, who hates it when he's not in control, raves about me to friends and family because of the easy trip we had in December and then in WDW in January-what he doesn't know is that I just follow the touring plans-he thinks it's like magic!:goodvibes

My UG 2009 for DL says that Toy Story Mania offers Fastpasses. Without this site I wouldn't have known it doesn't!

You're right-there are a couple of mistakes like that-they obviously use the same database for WDW and DL-the DL 09 version also says the Tiki Room is 'Under New Management' as it is in WDW, which I can't stand...good thing I know better or I'd skip it, and I really love it!

I also bought this and think it's a great companion to what we learn on the DIS. It helps me know which questions to ask! (and Hydroguy should SO wirte a book, too!)

I don't follow their DL touring plan very much because we have our own bizarre mix of what we do when (supplemented heavily by what I've learned here), but since I've never been to DCA, I am doing that touring plan with a few adjustments.

I like that they devote a lot of the space to planning ahead -- it does little good to show up at a park and THEN use the guide. I don't agree with everything they say about kids and Disney (things that frighten, stamina, order, etc.) but I'm glad they're there to make me think about the potential.

I bought their "Mini Mickey" guide to WDW when we ended up there at the last minute:eek: last fall. I read most of it on the plane! Helped me know which attractions I wanted to see most and gave me a starting point each day.

I think for the $12 on Amazon it's worth buying.

And to rub it in, the UG-DL '09 says:

Enchanted Tiki Room - Under New Management! Better at the Magic Kingdom

In the Hotels and Motels section, the UG completely overlooks these 2 hotels/motels:

Park Vue Inn (1570 S Harbor Blvd)

Ramada Maingate (1650 S Harbor Blvd)

:upsidedow

I also like the UG to DLR. I have the 2009 version and noticed the same thing about the Tiki room. I just recently picked up the WDW 2009 version from the library. I compared the two and discovered that many of the quotes from readers are the same in both books. I can't help but think that they copy and pasted much of the DLR one from the WDW. :scared:

I also thought it was amusing that the WDW version had a whole chapter on parenting skills that the DLR one doesn't have.

I would totally support HydroGuy compiling a info. book. A nice small handy one - almost pocket size (big pocket of course).

I can't decide whether to take the book with us or not. I found a bunch of "mistakes" also but don't plan on sending him any corrections - let his staff figure it out. The touring plans did not fit us either.

I totally agree!! I bought this book last year for our first trip there ever and loved it and then bought it again this year for our trip and it totally helps!! I love it! now that I found this site I think Im set now!!!! All the info here is awesome but the book does help us 'newbies' lol

It doesn't have fastpasses at DL? :scared1: Really? We use the fast pass option at Hollywood Studios at WDW to ride it several times in a day.

I have always used the WDW version so I bought the DL version for our trip in August. I'm using that book and this site to plan for the trip so I'd appreciate it if you'd mention any of the obvious errors in the DL version so that I don't rely on them! Please?

The only mistakes I noticed where the ones already mentioned. Otherwise I like the book and the info. I put notes in mine about where I like to eat and what I like there.

This will be a little bit long, but here are some things that I've noticed: :goodvibes

Enchanted Tiki Room is not better at MK; it's "far superior" at DL. :goodvibes

Magic Mornings are Tues, Thurs, Sat, Sun. (Not Monday.)

In early 2009, the FP machines for Grizzly River Run have been connected.

The UG doesn't mention that DL's and DCA's FP networks are not connected; so you can get a FP at one park, walk to the other park, and right away get another FP.

Update: Golden Dreams is now closed.

Update: Disneyland: The First 50 Magical Years is being refurbed -- it will hopefully return in late-Sept 2009.

Ugly Bug Ball (in DCA) is closed. (It closed in 2005 or 2006.)

The Height Requirement for Autopia is 54-inches. (Not 52-inches.)

Mickey does not go to character meals.

Update: The Vineyard Room is closed.

Update: Burger Invasion (in DCA) is closed.

Update: Yamabuki (Japanese Restaurant) is closing.

JMHO: The Carnation Cafe does not have "one of the best cups of coffee in the Kingdom."

Update: Starabilias Gallery, Department 56, Club Libby Lu, and Illuminations (in DTD) are closed.

Update: The Secret of the Stone Tiger stage show (in The Oasis) is closed. No word yet on when or if Aladdin and Jasmine's Story Tale Adventures will be returning.

La Petite Patisserie is closed. (It closed in 2004)

The UG mentions Fort Wilderness a few times, but Fort Wilderness is not open to Guests.

Splash Mountain has Single Rider.

Rancho del Zocalo does not serve ribs.

River Belle Terrace does not serve roast chicken or pasta.

The UG recommends riding Dumbo, and then Peter Pan. Geesh, every one knows: Peter Pan first... always first. (Then Dumbo. ;) )

Update: Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough opened in Nov 2008. :thumbsup2

In April, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is opening in what was the "Once Upon A Time...The Disney Princess Shoppe" -- the UG said that it was opening in the castle. princess:

The UG says that Honey, I Shrunk the Audience is "exceptionally popular" and to see it before 11am; but HISTA is a "see anytime" attraction.

The UG says that Star Tours has an age requirement of 3-years, but from what I can tell it only has a height requirement of 40 inches.

Update: Parade of Dreams is now closed. The "Celebrate! A Street Party" non-parade parade stated on March 27, 2009.

DL does not have any type of Easter parade.

Update: Remember...Dreams Come True fireworks show will be closing in spring 2009. (Right now the DLR calendar only goes to early May, and RDCT is still on the calendar. :thumbsup2 )

Update: Triton's Garden is closed, and was replaced with Pixie Hollow with Tinkerbell and friends.

The UG recommends riding Space Mtn and Buzz Lightyear during Magic Mornings, but both of those have FastPass, so it seems like a waste of early entry time. JMHO it would be better to use the Magic Morning early entry time for Fantasyland or maybe Finding Nemo.

If you are going to Finding Nemo at park opening, when you get to the central hub, don't enter Tomorrowland. The line for Finding Nemo goes toward the Matterhorn. Instead, walk toward the Matterhorn and follow the CM's directions.

For Main Street, the UG doesn't mention some of the shops and stores on Main Street.

The UG hardly mentions anything about snacks -- Dole Whips at the Tiki Juice Bar, cream cheese filled pretzels near IASW, etc.

For DCA, the UG says that on "especially busy days" the Golden Gateway area and Condor Flats area is open 30 minutes early, at 9:30am -- but DCA's gates open (for these areas) every day -- not just "especially busy days." At 9:30 you can ride and/or get a FastPass for Soarin'.

In the Animation Building, the UG does not mention the Toy Story Zeotrope.

In Soarin', the floor does not drop away. :earsboy: Instead, the seats are raised ~40 feet.

Update: In the Golden Vine Winery, the short film Seasons of the Vine is closed. Instead, it has the Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar DCA preview center.

Grizzly River Run has "Single Rider."

Update: The "giant Mickey head" was removed from California Screamin'. Screamin' has Single Rider.

The Maliboomer is not the tallest structure in the park -- ToT is taller.

Toy Story Midway Mania does not have FastPass, but it does have Single Rider.

Update: the UG says that TSMM does not "get jammed until about 50 to 70 minutes after park opening." But TSMM gets very busy, very early. (To be fair, TSMM opened before this year's edition of the UG was published.)

Disney's Electrical Parade is seasonal. It's usually shown nightly during spring break and on weekends in the spring [and also the summer and the end of December], but this year it's getting a refurb and it's expected to open on Friday, June 12, 2009.

The UG doesn't have any photographs. FWIW, the first edition of The Disneyland Encyclopedia by Chris Strodder has 300 photos and some very good drawings. The DL Encylopedia is a fun read, and it's an excellent source of good information. Highly recommended. :thumbsup2

Sorry for being so long. :goodvibes

HTH :earsboy:

Off hand I know to ignore....

any pricing given (especially what it costs for a day!)
use hotel advice as a guide (much better info here)
scare ratings
ride Dumbo first - always ride PP first

I can't think of anything else off hand.....because I just ignored it as I was reading if I knew I read otherwise.

Just like any advice - including from friends and family - take it in and use it specific to you.

Hydro guy has compiled the best info in my opinion but the book does offer good tips worth the purchase or loan.

That's good list. :thumbsup2 I never noticed those, but I didn't read this years version cover to cover. Not in the info part of the guide but I did notice the survey at the back had a list of food service places to rate. The first one was the ABC Commissary which is at WDW. Talk about taking time out of your day to eat! That one requires you to go 3,000 miles to eat there! :rotfl:

I just finished reading the DL Encylopedia. LOVE it! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 It has info on every attraction at DL since it opened. It has some excellent maps that show where things used to be and what is there now. It brought to my attention things that I had overlooked before.
