Can I take a brand new unused ticket
Link it to a magic band
Then unlink It if the person ends up not being able to go?

My situation is this...
We have a large family trip planned but being military and other work factors there is a chance now that one person will not be able to go. I want to link a ticket to his magicband and book fp+ because we will not till about two weeks out if he can actual still come with us.
If he can't, can I just cancel the fp+ and unlink the ticket? This would be beneficial because he doesn't and can't goto Disney often so someone else in our family could use it on another trip before he would likely go.

You don't actually link tickets to magic bands. They are linked to the My Disney Experience account and the magic band reads what is stored in the account.

As long as a ticket is unused, it will stay in the account indefinitely and it can be reassigned to someone else.

Thanks
So if I understand correct if it goes unused it could be used by anyone else attached to the mde account it was originally assigned to but not transferred to another mde account?

Correct, it can be reassigned within your MDE account, or, you can ask Guest Relations to remove it from your MDE and give you a plastic RFID ticket. The ticket can be given to anyone.
