I would be more worried about a potential hurricane.
That was my first thought as well. I would be more concerned with the weather than crowds.

I say that cause we typically travel down to Florida that time of year, and there always seems to be something brewing weather wise. So I could be wrong of course, but I’m thinking, Labour Day crowds won’t be too bad.

Just got home...Did 1 day with express...and 1 day without express. On the day with it, we had everything done except mine kart madness by 3:30 (thats with eating lunch, and doing both shows). On the day without it, we still did a good bit, but by 1PM lines were more or less over 90 minutes for pretty much every ride except Monsters Unchained and curse of the werewolf. Even fyre drill was pushing 90 minutes. Then the thunderstorms came and basically shut down the whole park for 2.5 hours. If you're going during rainy season, I would get it just because of that factor. A few storms and your day will be wiped out, but it could at least be salvaged with express during the non rain periods. They actually were giving 50% refunds yesterday due to all the ride downtimes and storms (we personally didn't ask for one, but several people we talked to that night said they went to guest services and received them, and I saw other people in the facebook group saying the same thing.
Thank you for this reply. It’s making me think I’ll go for it.

Two questions for that I'm hoping someone can help me with:

- I don't currently have an active annual pass. I have a two day, Epic focused trip at the beginning of September. However, I will probably activate my new annual pass during this trip for the hotel discount. If I have regular one-day Epic tickets, can I get a refund or credit or whatever on the difference between that price and the AP price once my AP is active? (It's $20 per day that I would rather spend on a meal if possible)

- Are there any queues (either regular or single rider) at Epic that are tight like Hagrids? I cannot do the Hagrids line due to being claustrophobic (the low ceiling and tight walls and not being able to move is just a no go for me) and was wondering if there was anything that might cause a similar problem.

Battle at the ministry gets tight in a few spaces (especially if you do single rider). Mine-Kart Madness also gets very tight once you enter the building...it's a long stretch of hallway thats basically 1 person wide (we were in that area i'd guess for about 20 minutes entering), then it opens up again more. Nothing else off the top of my head stood out to me as potentially being tight. A lot of the queue spaces are outside or fairly wide open room spaces.

My goodness HP sounds like Black Friday vibes. No thank you. Given what you said we'll definitely start with Dark Universe instead. Appreciate you!
I mean we were on the ride by 9:11 on Thursday at park opening (14 minutes in the queue and thats just how long it took to walk it because we basically walked all the way onto it from entering the queue). We then did both rides in Dark universe during the rest of early entry. Personally Dark Universe isn't where I'd go. Monsters unchained rarely got over 30 minutes in the 2 days we were there, outside of rain periods. We also rode it back to back at night (entered line at 8:56 and walked right on) and then when we came off (about 9:15 at this time) they were still letting people enter the queue, so we jumped back on again). This land is easily the least crowded, and lowest wait times of any of the lands.

Black Friday vibes are fairly accurate though. One lady was yelling at people because she had her kids inhaler (kid was about 100 people ahead I'd guess) and the cast member actually told her to stop cutting line twice, that the kid could wait in his spot and let people past him until she got to him, but she just kept tyelling at people trying to push through. There was a lot of that, where kids/teenagers sprinted ahead of older family members and then rather than waiting, the older family members just tried to push through everyone. They really need a better system for opening this land up and letting people stampede through.

I did this during the preview and it was not an issue.

That's interesting because people could have some mobility issues but not need an actual device. My step-father-in-law for example doesn't use a mobility device but tends to need assistance for stairs, escalators at times, small curbs even especially after his stroke last year, that combined with his type 2 diabetes has made certain things harder for him.

I can understand if they were getting too many people through for early entry but going for visuals when we these days actively try to implement policies that don't use visuals to make assumptions about people is an odd choice
I hear ya...I can only tell you what I was seeing as we walked into that area. The cast member was making it very clear with her wording, if you are in a mobility device or a stroller you can enter through these doors. So one parent would push the stroller through, and the rest of the family would take the escalators, or the person in the mobility device would go through and the rest of their party would take the escalator. Now I didn't see anyone push back on this, so maybe they would have let people through if they simply asked, but in the 2-3 minutes it took us to clear that area, we saw 2 mobility devices go through and i'd say 4-5 strollers.

In general, the stairs are going to be a problem in this land, I get that people are saying there are elevators, but we saw lines for them, to the point that daily (we probably hit mario land area 6-7 times in our trip at different points of the day trying to get mine-kart madness done) and without fail as we were in that area, we'd see multiple dads carrying strollers down the steps, or older parents/guests struggling up steps. Basically pushing through, or solving the problem on their own in the quickest way possible rather than waiting for elevators. This is the only area where we saw this issue. There are stairs on basically every attraction (mine-cart madness may have been the only one without them off the top of my head), but there weren't lines/people waiting for those, like there were in general in mario area.

I don’t have any firsthand experience with this one, but I think it’s worth asking when you get there! They seem to be trying hard to do what they can for guests.

Okay, this one I have experience with, though I haven’t done every ride at Epic yet, so there are a few holes. But I have serious issues with feeling “trapped” in a queue full of people - it’s not really claustrophobia for me, but the same types of spaces are problematic.

I only walked through BatM, but could see a few spots in it that would be challenging if I were to be stuck there more than 5-10 minutes. But they were spaced between more open spaces, so, as long as the queue is moving, I think they’d be okay, A major issue if things were to halt entirely for a prolonged time, though.

Wing Gliders’ queue is outdoors but got tight within its space about halfway through a 60-min wait. It’s shaded but the ceiling (canopy?) is quite high, so while you get pretty penned in by switchbacks full of people, you don’t have the added pressure of no space above. I was struggling by the time I got on the ride, tbh.

Stardust has a short bit of semi-confined space, and some tight switchbacks on the loading platform - like Wing Gliders, though, a high ceiling with lots of space above: the penning in is from the queue full of people. I was able to position myself toward the outside of most of the queue, with plenty of free air and space just by looking away from the queue.

I did SR on Mario, so I only saw a small bit of the queue - that one looked like it could be problematic. Nowhere near as confined as Hagrid’s, but indoors and tight in some spots. I watched a video walkthrough of the full queue and could see potential for difficulty. SR skipped a LOT but was a good trade-off for my needs.

Monsters was a non-issue, despite being indoors. There are two pre-show rooms that were a little dicey, but positioning myself at the outside of the crowd, against a wall did the trick. Think conditions like the room before the elevators at Gringott’s, and about the same amount of time - maybe a few minutes.

Cirque was questionable once inside the tent. I wasn’t prepared for that one. It felt TIGHT in there, very loud, and difficult to exit if needed. I was stuck in place for maybe 15 minutes before we started moving at a good clip into the pre-show room, and that was about my limit. The pre-show room is HUGE and holds a ton of people: get yourself to one side or the other of the mass of people and you’ll have some breathing room and an emergency exit close by.

I had no issues with Werewolf or Untrainable Dragon. I hanve’ done Mine Cart, so no info there.

Hope this helps!

I'd love any advice for how to reduce the stress of an Epic day. We were going to wait, but changed our minds and are going in August. I am an annual passholder, but my adult son's pass won't be activated yet, so we will probably have to buy him a regular single day pass. Usually I buy tickets/passes when I arrive, but it looks like the Epic single day AP and regular tickets occasionally sell out a few days ahead. Yes, we have been at Universal in the summer before; the weather is not a problem.

We're staying at Stella Nova and then moving hotels to have express passes for the old parks. I can't justify the Epic express because it doesn't cover everything and we are splurging elsewhere. My daughter and I want to ride all of Nintendo and Monsters, and for her as many coasters as possible. But I want to make this fun for my son and husband, who experience some anxiety at theme parks.

Are there any places to escape the crowds? I am an expert on this at the old parks and can take my family to places to decompress at a moment's notice. I need to know the Epic hidden spots!

I'm a bit confused about the easiest way to enter Nintendo, if we make it to early entry. What is this "secret passage?" If we don't make it that early, is this like Hagrid's and the worst in late morning? This is the highlight for us.

What can I tell my son about the intensity of Mine Cart and Monsters? He is fine with rides like Spiderman, but has never been on any coaster. He has not tried FJ yet, but hopefully this trip. He used to have problems with any motion on rides and is slowly testing what he can handle now.

I appreciate the comments about claustrophobia and welcome any more advice on that. My husband gets very claustrophobic when there are walls + people. All inside lines are stressful, but some are worse. He will never do Gringotts again after a bad experience, and will only ride Hagrid's under ideal conditions. He is happy to sit and wait for us if necessary. I have already decided to skip MoM, because it doesn't seem worth the insane wait times. I am looking for info on other things to enjoy in HP, because we are HP fans.

Thanks for all your questions - we're going in late August too with a LOT of people (11 in total) so I'd love to know these details and any pertinent info people have obtained.
We'll have two toddlers with us and we know there isn't much if anything for them at any of the Universal parks due to height restrictions so we'll be doing a lot of kid swapping. This is also the first visit to Universal for the majority of my group so lots to see/do for the older kids.

My buddy joined me last minute (like literally booked his flight 48 hours before we left) and had no park tickets or express pass, and was able to purchase both the day of. I talked to the team member about single day tickets being sold out for my dates for awhile, and they commented that they still have them to sell day of, from the pool of 2 days + 1 at epic or 3 days + 1 at epic. You'll be fine in our experience day of, if your date does sell out for single days for some reason.

Celestial Park never felt crowded. Mario/Nintendo world was easily the most crowded I felt of any of the lands (berk and monsters being the least - berk because of the size and monsters because it seems to be the one area people skip). The lands themselves are small, you don't realize it if you watch videos, but when you get there, the whole park honestly feels on the smaller side. Celestial park is big and pretty wide open, but then you get into the portals and with the exception of how far back Berk extends, the other 3 lands felt small.
I'm a bit confused about the easiest way to enter Nintendo, if we make it to early entry. What is this "secret passage?" If we don't make it that early, is this like Hagrid's and the worst in late morning? This is the highlight for us.
There was no secret passage way for early entry when I was just there. There is a side door for mobility devices and scooters to avoid the escalator, but there was no other way to enter the ground level (which is important for minecart - but that may be the most unreliable ride in the park to try for at early entry right now). My advice is go up the escalator and take the stairs to your right and you come out closer to the entrance for minecart if you want to head there. Otherwise, go left and do mario kart and yoshi.
What can I tell my son about the intensity of Mine Cart and Monsters? He is fine with rides like Spiderman, but has never been on any coaster. He has not tried FJ yet, but hopefully this trip. He used to have problems with any motion on rides and is slowly testing what he can handle now.
Has he done any coasters? It's not a smooth one, but intensity wise, I'd say it's between a barnstormer and slinky dog at disney for comparison. I'd say personally this was the most underwhelming ride for us both, largely because the wait time is insane for the type of ride it is. Monsters is more intense, you get jerked around quite a bit. One minute you're face down looking at the creature from the black lagoon and the next you feel like you're about to be upside down and this happens several times throughout the ride. We loved this ride...I'd argue it's the best ride in the park, yet it regularly has the lowest wait time. My buddy has motion sickness issues, but didn't have any on this ride. If he is ok with being scared, and can handle some herky jerky motions, he will be ok, but based on what you're describing, this may be a struggle for him. Maybe don't tell him and see what happens haha.

You do not need to skip Ministry of Magic/Battle at the Ministry. If they continue to do this at early entry, do it then and you'll more or less walk right onto the ride or close to it. If you'd rather not do the ride, you can still walk through the floo and enter the minstry which is a massive wide open space and walk the perimeter of it. When you walk up to the queue, it will say attraction entry, or there will be a single rider+ministry of magic viewing area entrance...go through that one in order to just see the space and walk through the floo. You go directly to the floo doing this. Of the 3 Harry Potter lands, this is my least favorite. The theming is still great, but the land itself is kind of meh for other things to do. We enjoyed sitting outside at the cafe and people watching while having a beer, but most of the spaces are just faux store spaces at this point, with a wine bar, candy shop and wand store being more or less it in this area. hopefully they fill those in with some additional things to do. The small show/musical at the bottom of the steps was decent.

The main show is really good, but if your husband struggles with tight spaces and being indoors, he'll have to skip this show. The holding area before they let you into the pre-show is tight and an enclosed space, and they herd you in like cattle to the pre show area, this is probably the most claustrophobic I felt all day (and I dont have issues being in tight spaces), this was just uncomfortable with people constantly bumping into you and touching you just because they keep announcing please move forward and fill in all space and they literally fill in all space.

The stairs before entering the ride on MarioCart also may cause your husband issues, and he will have a hardtime in the minecart queue based on what you are describing.

Like the other Universal parks, you'll need to go through the whole queue with the toddlers and then swap at the family room. Some people love this, I personally hate it. Seems like torture making a kid go through a 60-90 minute line only to not ride the ride.

Oh, definitely. Most likely we won't be taking the toddlers in the queue. Whoever isn't riding will likely take them and do something else - probably the grand parents are they won't do thrill rides at Epic.

I'd take the bus. We did 2 days at Helios and 1 at Stella Nova. It's about a 20 minute walk to the front entrance or a 3 minute bus ride. You'll appreciate the bus on your way back.
I am a walker at home and am very hyper at Universal, and my son is a runner, so I have a feeling we'll walk, but my husband and daughter may prefer the bus. I will probably test out the walk and catch a glimpse of Epic on our arrival day when we are not going to a park. :D I have been known to walk from Royal Pacific to City Walk and back simply because I couldn't sit still when others were napping. :bounce:

My son has not been on any coasters. He doesn't like horror (neither do I) but I have heard that Monsters is not horror, and he likes mild creepiness. I think he'll only consider Minecart because it's Nintendo, but maybe it's not worth the risk.

Traveling with toddlers reminds me of how much we've enjoyed the play areas, which reminds me of another question I have. We love the Jurassic play area. I have climbed through by myself, lol. The new Dreamworks play area sign says you need to have a child with you. My daughter is under 18, but is a teenager who is three inches taller than me. I'm guessing she does not count. Does the Epic training play area have a similar sign?

It may be worth watching a youtube video of the monsters ride to get a feel for it. You'll know your sons threshold for that based on the video

@KatieCharlotte I can honestly say my recent Epic day was the LEAST stressful theme park day I’ve had in a long time! I had no plan, no return times, nothing more than a wish list of things I hoped to do - I checked wait times between doing stuff and jumped on things when they had a wait I thought I could handle. it was great!

I think it’s important to note that long wait times do not necessarily equal big crowds outside of the lines. I found it very easy to locate spots to sit or stand a spell away from any action and just take things in. Indoors, I highly recommend the Oak & Star and Le Gobelet Noir: both are huge, with lots of rooms where it was easy to eat/drink and rest a while on my own without feeling like I was hogging a table others needed. I literally had an entire room to myself at Le Gobelet!
