Hi, again first trip to CA, we are planning to go Universal the last week of August on a week day. Is it worth it to buy the express pass as we are only spending one day there?

Probably not, everyone here will be back in school by that time so it shouldn't be too crowded. I'd wait and buy on-site if it's unexpectedly crowded.

I agree with oakleycat. Also, be sure to get there when the park opens. The queues are much lighter earlier in the day.
