Leading up to Thanksgiving isn't bad but that weekend is SUPER busy so be prepared for long lines everywhere.

Does it help to stay at a Universal resort? Does front of the line really cut down on wait time or just partially?

That time of year having unlimited Express access certainly helps but the waits are still more than usual. You will still save considerable time from the regular lines and if you can swing it to stay onsite, do it!

It seems with Fastpass at WDW you still can wait up to 20 minutes at the busiest. But this seems minor compared to waiting online for 60 minutes.

Even the food lines are super long that weekend. We have gone for Thanksgiving weekend the last 2 years & I have found that there are less people shopping in the malls than there were in Universal I left the parks & went to the mall!
