Even in my area that didn't get the housing boom and price rise, houses can't be found that cheap. I do agree you can find a lot of house for the money right now due to so many foreclosures, but you're still going to have to have over 100k. I'm an hour and a half, give or take, north of Detroit. It is a buyers market, though. Houses that were low 400's a year ago are now near 200k.
We're about an hour and a half NE of Detroit, a stone's throw from the Canadian border. We've seen a bigger drop than many areas because in addition to the foreclosure issues, we have the added downside of being quite a long commute from where most of the jobs are. Not only are people who live here losing their homes, no one new is moving here because $4 gas is too recent a memory for them to think a 45 mile commute is acceptable. If you're in the general area I'm guessing, that wouldn't be as much an issue there because you're closer to the area that many of the corporations settled in when they left the city.
We have looked at some homes in other areas (I about had a heart attack when we saw a fixer upper in West Bloomfield for $65K!!), so I know the whole area hasn't taken quite the hit we have. But I like our area and don't want to move my kids that far from their friends, so we'll likely stay close to where we're at now.
