For the disers who fly united. I am not asking to change size. I am asking: size is 14" length, 9 inch width, 22" height. I am looking to purchase two cheap bags for our kids. I am not finding bags that size in stores. We have bags that are 22" length, 9" width and less than 14" height, we don't care if the employees would need to turn the bags sideways to fit, it would not harm their contents. Would that be OK? Thank you.

Aren't length and height the same measurement? I'm having trouble thinking this through. To me, there is height or width (what the bag measures when standing on end)' width across and depth. How "high" it is if you laid it down on the floor.

It doesn't matter that it's okay with you if your luggage is turned sideways to fit. It matters to the airline, and to the passengers you'd be inconveniencing by not putting your luggage with wheels or handle first.

The 22" is the one that counts more than the rest.

There's usually a handle on the side and top, so there's something to pull luggage out. If it doesn't take up any more space by turning it sideways, it should be ok. People bring duffles and back packs on the plane and they obviously don't have the same dimensions nor wheels facing one way or not.

Thanks. We are looking at duffel bags. Just at this time unable to find 14" length, 22 height. I am finding 22" length 12" high. We will not be purchasing anything with wheels. And we normally but our bag under our seat. D

Any rectangular container - suitcase, box, etc. - would take up more of a delineated space such as an airplane's overhead compartment when stowed with the longest edge parallel to the fuselage.

Turning a suitcase sideways prevents at least one other passenger from stowing their own suitcase in the shared space that is the overhead compartment.

Carry-on luggage isn't required to be as large as the measurements listed on an airline's website. It just can't be any bigger.

The three different numbers can be applied to the three dimensions in any order.

Note that the 45" total is redundant. It is not possible to go over 45" total without exceeding at least one of the three individual numbers.

The height and length is the only thing diff. I'm not sure how that changes if it's turned sideways to take up someone's space. If it's 22 wide and you turn it side ways it's basically 22 height. Maybe it's something I'm not seeing. So SHARED space would still be the same. I also think the OP means 9" deep and 22" width/length and 14" width/length which is basically the same size suitcase.

If you have a piece of luggage 9 x 22 x 14 and put it in long ways, it will take up 14" of bin space. If you put it sideways, it will take up 22". It's all about the space you are taking across the bin.

Thanks for the pics. THAT I understand. What I assumed (because she said she didn't care if the airline had to turn it) the OP was speaking of was taking her suitcase and just adjusting the way she placed it in the overhead bin which in fact would take up no additional space and not create issues.

Hi. I was just looking on overstock for duffle bags and I realized the measurements are for rolling luggage, it was the 22" height I couldn't "get". And the picture posted here verified it. We just wanted duffel bags so it would take up the same length of a piece of rolling luggage placed in the overhead bin correctly, wheels - either to the front or back of the compartment. Thanks to all of you.
