Unique Baby Girls names??

I missed this thread over the summer; probably because my real world life kept me too busy to be on the DIS. But it is funny & interesting to read this thread.

Some of the "unusual" names listed here I hear daily. I have a neice Addison that way predates Grey's Anatomy and I had another neice that was almost name Teagen, there are several Kendall's in DS elementry school and so on and so forth.

Names can be very regional to begin with and they go in cycle's. Who's going to name their daughter the same name in as the girl in high school who stole your boyfriend? Or after the girl who's boyfriend you stole? Or DH's ex-girlfriend? Or if a name was extermly popular when you were growing up (Jennifer, Michelle, Karen, Lisa), you tend to avoid it when naming your child. Right now, it's a huge trend to name girls boys names--ie, Avery, Bailey, Presley, Loganne, Sloane, Carson and Payton.

And not that any of that matters. Many of those names are still GREAT names. It's just fun to hear (read) them. And it just shows you should pick the name that stands out as special to you. Plus, it gives you an idea of what is going on in naming. I also have to wonder, if someone has a truly great, unique name, do you think they'd post it or keep it unique? :o Or is that just me? :rolleyes1

OK, I guess I should contribute something: Keaten, Remlee, Rhianne, Noelle, Roelene

Take "Caitlin" for example. That's a traditional Irish form of spelling (but not the only one, I don't think.)

Yes, it is the only one in Irish Gaelic (though it properly is "Caitlín", note the fada mark, which tells you that the vowel is long), but written in English the phonetic (and btw, traditional American) spelling of that name is Kathleen, because that is closest to how it is properly pronounced. The real proper pronunciation is more like koyt-hleen, but that is very difficult for Americans to get their mouths around. (Sorry, folks. There is no such thing as an actual Irish name that sounds like "KATE-LYNN".) The stress is on the first syllable.

As for Aisling, it isn't pronounced "ASH-LEE", it is "ASH-LING", and again, the stress is on the first syllable.

Quick Hint: If you have to tell people how to pronounce your child's name when writing it, you might want to rethink the spelling. That poor child will have a lifetime of correcting people. Or hearing "WHAT?!?"

Spelling it exactly as it sounds never works. I mean, it'll work but it'll look so dumb. At least that's how I feel. Awlanee?

I have a SHAYLIN on my cheerleading team! First I heard that! Also my niece has a friend SHAraya(pronunced Shah-Ray -A) . My Daughter is DEVON as I have said before I was going to spell her name DEVYN I thought it looked more feminine my mother told me back then I was crazy! I should have because she gets called DEVONNE Not Devon. And now I have only seen it spelled Devyn once! I have also seen it spelled Devin and Deven and Devan! When I named her that in 1994 I only heard it one time prior to that! Now it seems very popular! There are 4 Devons that I know one a boy andthe others all girls the same age of course and 2 on the same cheerleading team and the three in the same gym class at school! How crazy is that! ??????? I also worked with a girl mealanie(pronunced MAY-Lan-EE)

I think some of the older one's

Ella
Emma
Ava

I also think Mia or Mya is cute and for some reason I like Samantha and call her Sam. Not very unique.

Of course when we have a girl we will name it Julia after great grandma.

A little more unusual is Ryleigh you can spell it a bunch of ways.

but let me quote my husband. When picking out baby names he makes me stick with traditional spelling and names because "you don't want to take him to disney and them not have any pencils with his name on it." Is that crazy or what so our son is named Connor and he has been to Disney 3 times and never got a pencil he was interested in other things. ha-ha

I would have to say for a girl's name, I would probably go with:

Ashlyn
Elise
Helen
Zoe or Chloe (I think that if I ever had twin daughters, I would name them this.)
Elizabeth
Jade
Stormie (I had a friend in high school with this name and loved it.)
Hannah

Anyway, those top my list of favorites.

I'm afraid I was pretty much a crowd follower when I named DD...her name is Caitlin Grace (Pure Grace). We chose the Irish spelling but use the American pronunciation. I tried to talk DH into Samantha Rae-to be shortened to Sammy Rae...my dad's name is Sam and my father in lay is Ray. I thought it was cute, DH thought it was too southern. What can I say, I'm from the south.

My son is also named Connor...there is a TON of stuff with his name on it that we have seen but the only thing we own with his name on it is a hand made embroidered birth announcement my Aunt gave us. :goodvibes

My neice goes to school with twin girls named Alpha and Omega.

In my area, naming kids after countries and cities and even continents seems to be popular. I know kids named:

Asia
Korea
Dallas
Odessa
London

Teresa

My DD's are Kaitlin and Cortney. I know, pretty common but not commonly spelled. My nieces are Hope and Emmalyn. I think all four names are pretty. Another name we thought of is Charleigh Elisabeth.

DH and I are planning on having another baby VERY soon :)

We have chose London for either a girl or boy

Personally, I think that people are forced to have to tell people how to pronounce it because people cannot even pronounce last names correctly! Does not matter how it is spelled!

DD4 is Olivia...wasn't so popular when we chose it.
DD1 is Delia. The receptionist at our pediatrician's office keeps calling her Delilah. When you see "Delia", do you think "Delilah"? I want to shout out "It's DEE-LEE-A", but of course, I don't...scared I'll get a swift reprimand to "hush" in the dr's office :rotfl:

My daughter's name is Ashlyn. I also like Sullivan, Ansley, and Peyton. I kinda like the name Anderson for a girl or a boy. If it's a girl she can be Andi for short. Cute, huh? I figure some people might not go for that. :thumbsup2
