Unique Baby Girls names??

My daughter's name is Madyn. (pronounced Madden) I love it! The only drawback was that people used to - not so much anymore - pronounce it "May-den."
She answers to both her name and her nickname "Maddy." Hopfully, she will always love her name as much as we do. I love the way it looks, the way it sounds. I found the name once and just couldn't let it go! Thankfully, her dad felt the same way!

I agree that spellings go all over the map when you try to transliterate from a language that doesn't use the Roman alphabet. I'm kind of touchy about it because I have a surname that was regularly butchered at Ellis Island and went on to become fairly common in the US in that form. I have the original 16th century Romanised spelling, and Americans often tell me that I am spelling it incorrectly.

I've spent my whole life having to explain about the distinction between Irish names and Irish-American names. Many of the names that Americans think of as Irish names originated in the US and are thought of as odd in Ireland. I've heard story after story about how, upon visiting Ireland for the first time, these folks were surprised to find that the locals did not know how to pronounce that "traditional" Irish name. While many of them *are* lovely-sounding names, thinking of them as Irish isn't quite right. (By contrast, I find that a lot of Irish-Americans I've met tend to think that actual Irish names, especially the feminine ones, are kind of gutteral and ugly-sounding.)

We have two boys and we had a hard time agreeing on names when I was pregnant. We actually went into the delivery room with about 10 boys names for each and not one girls name we could agree on. My DH would agree with your comment on girls irish names - so I guess it was just meant to be for us to have boys!
Irish-Americans are very much like Italian-Americans - as proud as they are of their heritage they are now so far removed that it's difficult for them to distinguish between the original traditions and adapted. Many of the songs they sing on St. Pat's day aren't even Irish songs - they're american! And a true irishman/woman would not think of turning beer green!
So, to those who wish to give their kids a name like Kyara or Connor do it because you like the sound of the name - please don't try to pass it off as irish. Of course, we'll take credit for the fact that you've adapted a name from one of our originals! :goodvibes

Ann,

Loved your last sentence... :rotfl:

I named my daughter Aubre (pronounced just like it is spelled). I have been asked many times why no 'y' on the end. I had a close friend and her neice was named Aubrey. I loved the sound of it. I dropped the 'y' just because. And I know one other Aubre, her mom loved our Aubre's name and named her that. I met a 'grown up' Aubre about five years ago and she told me she was named that from the Bread song 'And Aubrey was her Name'. Of course I had to run right out and buy that and listen to it.

Our list included:

Aubrey
Ellison
Amelia
Caroline
Juliana
Natalie
Victoria
Audrey
Madeline
Victoria
Abigail

We didn't have a choice for a boy name. Tradition in DH's family says that a boy MUST be named after DH's father. Luckily, I liked the name Andrew. But I was kinda bummed that I didn't have a choice. However, we ended up with 2 girls

:goodvibes Shannon
princess: Olivia Faith princess: Delia Hope

I have 3 girls 12,8,&4 and 2 boys 6 & almost 2 here are there names the 12 yr old is Forrest Mary Martha, 8yr old is ElsaCraig Marie, and the 4 yr old is Guienevere Vivian Maria. I will also tell the boys names 6 yr old Gregoe Navarre Lazarus, and the baby Tucker Kristoff Lee. I did not make any of the names up they are all very old names, and i did soooooo much research on each of them I had to know the meaning. People give give a strange look when i tell them there names. But we live in a very small town (School only has around 100 kids k-12th) So every time i was pregnant people couldnt wait for there names LOL. But i love long old beautiful names, probably because my name is Ann and DH is Ted. :grouphug:
oops! my typing skills my son is Gregor not gregoe

I work in the NICU at a local hospital. Lots of names that people think are "unique" are not, in fact, unique at all. They are, instead, fads. If I had a quarter for every time i heard that Neveah is "heaven spelled backwards" I would be rich!

We did not find out the sex of either of our children prior to their births so we picked first names that could be for girls or boys and altered the spelling. We were blessed with girls both times. Their names are Kamryn Grace and Kaedyn Elizabeth. We refer to them as Kammy and Kaedy.

My brother and his wife were going to name their 3rd child Easton if it was a boy and Reece if it was a girl. While my SIL was pregnant, their oldest (3 at the time) kept patting mommy's tummy saying "Hi, baby Easton". When they found out they were having a girl, they decided to keep the name and change the spelling. Baby Eastyn is now 2 years old.

My name is Michaela Pronounced Mi Ky La that's not too common, although I do hear other ponounciations no and again

DD name is Laurel. We absolutely love it, and so do the people who she meets. She has been the only Laurel we have run into for her age so far - another big plus. Middle name is Elise, which we also like alot.

I didn't have time to read through all of the posts on this thread, however, ttc myself (and with 2 boys now) I've been thinking alot about girls names.

I like:

Lauren
Allison
Adrianna
Gianna
Isabella
Samantha
Julianna

Aubre is a very common name in the French-speaking parts of South Louisiana; both as a given name and as a surname. Twenty years ago when you saw it as a given name it was usually male, but now you often see girls with it, too. In the Cajun French dialect that is the normal way to spell it.
