Here's some more unusual (at least for our area) girl names:
Holbrook, Tanyon, Jessa, Jewell, Haidyn, Kinsey, Karsen, Karlie, Toleka, Annika, Kennedy (popular elsewhere but virtually unheard of here!), Micah, Blayne, Kendall, Clara, Rylie, Kenya,Teigan, Aspen,Cadence,Shalome, Tessa,Sommer, Autumn,Brynn.

Really I think so much of it depends on where your niece lives, and what names are popular there.

Kelly
I have a Tessa. :) It's pretty uncommon.

DS's kindergarten class doesn't have any duplicates except a boy and a girl both named Ryan. There are a lot of traditional names - John, Joseph, Daniel, Elizabeth. If this is your child's kindergarten class as well, send me a PM, LOL!

I'm not trying to spoil everyone's fun with this, but the O'range and LeMon Jello twins story is an urban legend. Check out http://www.snopes.com/racial/language/names.htm .

Actually, my dh trained twins in St. Louis whose first names were Lemonjello and Orangejello can't remember what the last name was. At any rate, not the same as the story on snopes as it says the last name was Jello and these twins had it in each of their first names. They pronounced their names Lemawn ja low and orang ja low.

Some girl names I adore - -

I have 2 girls and 2 boys and I wanted their names to be unique because mine was old and plain.

Some pretty girl names I have heard or found while researching names for my girls.

Kimberleigh
Carina
Calista
Daviann
Rhianna
Siobhan

Being Irish I wanted Irish names for my kids--DD8 is Carina which is the female version of the correct spelling of Ciaran and I can't tell you DD4 because she is the only one to ever have her name in census history! Her name is an old Irish last name and her middle name is LIORA. I'll try to see if I can find the paper I used to write down all the names I liked and post them here.

Chantel (pronounced Shantell)
Violet
Josette

My name is totally unique since my Mom made it up:
Christamae (Pronounced Kristuhmay)

There are 2 Pipers at my sons school and one down the street.

After perusing all 10 pages, I didn't see my DD8's name - she is Heather Leanne. We tried to be unique without being obnoxious. We used a family name for her middle name - it is my sister's first name.

I am Lisa Marie - in the age of Elvis' daughter - there were always WAY too many of us in classes together. There were 6 of us in the 5th grade, and I wasn't going to do that to my kids!

My DS4 is Christopher Richard, again not too popular, but using family names. Daddy is Chris, and my dad is Richard.

Congrats and good luck on choosing a name!!

What? That's nuts. What's her middle name? Ann? Spelled "Aghnnhe"?

My oldest daughter's name is Taytem Ann. I loved the name Tatum but wasn't a fan of the spelling. She is 8 and she loves her name. We call her Tatie for short. My youngest daughter's name is Payton Marie. Her name is definitely more common than my oldest. She, however, doesn't like her name and prefers to be called Lucy. (her favorite movie is Narnia)

You have received lots of suggestions so I don't know if you even need anymore. Here are two that I have heard recently that are somewhat unique.

Eden
Brecken

Another name I have heard that is really popular is Nevaeh (not sure how it pronounced) but it is heaven spelled backwards.

love this thread.

how about Kerrin, it is Gaelic, derived from the boys name Kerr, meaning dark and mysterious. this is my name and I have seen very few people with it. I love it.

Good luck with the search

callaghan

Love seeing all the names. Don't see my DD's name : Dena
Other DD is Amie Beth.
Some of the unusual names I've seen:
Moira
Roisin (Ro-sheen)
Ryleigh
Stacia
Totianna
My girls like names from the Road to Avonlea series - Felicity and Cecily.
If we ever have another daughter, I'd like to name her Sophia Grace.

Hubby and I are of Irish descent and wanted an Irish name for our son. We finally settled on Cooper, but had a hard time finding anything out of the ordinary in the way of Irish names.

Cooper is of Old English descent and means barrel maker. Not exactly Irish, but was actually fairly common in Ireland (if you were a barrel maker!). We have only met one other person named Cooper, a boy in his school that is the same age!

Of course we call him Coop for short!

When i was pg with my son, my dh chose Mara Jade for a girl.I already knew it was a boy (he didnt) or else id have never agreed.Mara Jade is a Star Wars character! So we ended up with Sean Christopher which although fairly generic, we dont run into many Sean's. Occasionally Shawn tho.
When i was pg the second time, i knew it was a girl and i named her Rhiannon Leigh. Rhiannon is an old old welsh name.I am part Irish and part Welsh so i wanted to honor both of those heritages.DS got the Irish name DD got the Welsh one.
Every time someone asks her name and i say "Rhiannon" they inevitably say "Brianna?"
How freaking difficult is it really?Oh and her Dr.'s office calls for RYNAN and thinks she is a HE???
I wouldnt change it for a second though.I have a not so common name too and i think it is something to be proud of.

Incidentally Rhiannon Leigh means "fairy queen of the meadow" How cool is that???

Sherrie

Don't have time to read the whole thread - my two girls are Cassidy Marie and Carrigan Elizabeth. I love both names! I have a friend with 5 kids that all start with Car - Carissa, Carson, Carrigan, Carter and the new one is Carben

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to names, but here are some unique and pretty names I've heard lately:

Cricket (yeah, like the bug)
Sommer
Brynn
Kira
