Unhappy with Soarin'

Unfortunately digital projectors that can project onto a screen that large are rare and very very expensive. Also the digital IMAX projector only works on a 70' screen and I believe Soarin' uses an 80' screen.

Actually from what I've understood about Digital IMAX is that they don't dare show it on a 70' screen - because the resolution is too poor to blow up that big. I haven't heard of Digital IMAX being any sort of advantage.

There are lots of advantages to going digital if you're Disney.

IMAX is working on a new projection technology. I haven't seen Digital IMAX myself so I can't say if it's any good right now or not.

But if you're Disney, going digital means no film, meaning the only cost to maintaining the projection system is lamps. It also means no scratches, fading and a flicker free picture that looks the same every time.

I wasn't referring to going digital in general...however, the extremely large format presents a REALLY LARGE problem with digital projection, and that is resolution. Film is somewhat unlimited resolution, although they do break it down to "theoretical" and "apparent" resolutions. Digital projection systems are just nowhere near what an IMAX film's resolution is. If you blow it up to big, you start seeing each "pixel" as a square and compression artifacts become far more noticeable.

I haven't been to one, but from what I've heard Digital IMAX is displayed nowhere near as big as most standard IMAX theaters (although they are variable size and some are fairly small) - and in some cases only as big as a traditional screen.

Sorry to hear about the disappointment. It is such a great ride (without those distractions).

When you write your letter, please ask them to have it all spruced up before August! :-)

I have the same problem with Star Tours, it doesn't feel real to me anymore. I was so happy when they announced a new one in 2011. I thought I heard rumors about them making a new Soarin' film but don't know for sure.

The Soarin' film has been nothing but a rumor that I have seen.

The funny part of Star Tours, a new version was "announced" as far back as 2004...they just forgot to actually do it...

As I was waiting for one of my last rides on this trip I wasn't paying attention to Patrick. I can say the dialogue with him LOL. I was first in row one  and I chatted with the CM when she notice I wasn't paying attention. I mentioned the continual rumors of a new movie, she said she has heard the rumors but said she had not heard anything more than what has been heard in the past.

Patrick still cracks me up! :rotfl: I believe he is the voice of Kronk from Emperor's New Groove. I would love a new movie for Soarin, but I would definately miss this one too. I just think it is neat to soar over so many places that I'm actually familar with.

I had heard years ago that DLR was trying to get a new Star Tours, but was having trouble getting another Disney park to go in on it with them. Finally it all came together.

Sorry you guys have had trouble with the dirt on Soarin'.... but I would take dirt any day!

I noticed the same spots of dirt at Soarin' Over Ca at DCA. I know it wasn't just a "dirty screen" because the speck came and went depending on the scene. I was distracted as well.
