Unfathomable: Church Massacre

I'm sorry if I'm coming across aggressive to you, that is not my intention at all. My aggression is towards Dylan Roof so I apologize if you felt it was towards you.

Thank you. I'm sure the horror of the topic made me over sensitive.

This reminds me of why I support the death penalty. And my understanding is his dad gave him this gun. I hope his dad is severely punished.

I've been sick to my stomach about this all day. I don't even know where to begin discussing this tragedy.

And, is that discussion limited to platitudes for the families of the victims? How in the world do you discuss the church shootings without discussing the shooter and his motivations? That's not a discussion. That's simply an on-line sympathy card.
That's a leap.

There's plenty to discuss about this tragedy, including his mental state, motivations, hate - and gun use.

But debates about gun control can go elsewhere, thanks.

It is just heartbreaking.
I've read several places there is a 5 year old who survived because her grandmother told her to play dead. Her grandmother's last act was to do everything she could to care for her grandchild. Everytime I think about it it brings tears.

If some terrible thing happened and wiped out every single black person on the planet years ago, do we believe this kid would have gone on to live a productive, violent-free life?

I lose a bit more faith in the human race every day, personally. :(
I still believe in the human race. Most people are good and decent. They just don't make the headlines.

We have too many stirring the pot ...encouraging hate and divisiveness. It brings out the crazies on both sides. The media plasters it wall to wall...24/7, while others fan the flames. They never miss an opportunity to promote their agenda. It's irresponsible and reprehensible.

Ha, I liked your post by mistake. LOL. Let me get this straight. Talking about "gun use" ok, talking about "gun control" no way. Sounds like semantics to me.

You can discuss that, just stay away from the gun control debate.

I don't need the media to tell me what to believe. A person that young with that level of hate learned it from somewhere. I believe he learned it from family, friends and his community .

You may very well be right...it sounds like his dad was a nutjob for giving his drug addicted son a gun. But we have no idea where he learned this hate YET. Like I said you may very well be right and he learned this hate from home but there are people everyday who leave and join ISIS and their parents have no idea why or did not teach them to hate. My point is let's wait before we speculate.

We know what the consequences will be if the thread goes downhill. Being able to talk and share here is a positive thing in the midst of tragedy. Surely we can come together, in this moment, and be mindfully respectful of the the requested boundaries.

It's so hard for me to believe that someone with a record could be given a gun, birthday present or not. What were his parents thinking???

I don't think it's so much mental illness as it is a disrespect for human life. Racism, if the reports are accurate, yes. But in general all this violence points to a lack of value for life itself. Is it violent games at a young age? Violence in the home? TV/movies? I'm sure there a lot of contributing factors (most I can't touch on due to rules) but to me it's just that lack of value for each other as human beings that is the root cause of this. It's horrific and until the cause is "fixed", I am afraid it is going to get worse. :guilty:
