Unfathomable: Church Massacre

We can debate the flag, the confederacy and the civil war all day long and all that does is take the focus from the fact that a mentally ill young man walked into a church and took 9 innocent lives.

He wanted to start a race war and guess what? Start fightong about a piece of cloth and he wins.

Someone defaced a memorial? For what? What does it prove? Nothing.

If they tear that flag down tonight, will all racism end tomorrow? No it wont.

We can't change history. And trying to wipe it away does nothing.

If you want to pretend that this is a southern issue, go for it, but you are lying to yourself. If you want to blame a flag, go for it but its only clouding the issue.

Its not a southern issue or a flag issue or even a gun issue; its is still a people issue.

Exactly. People issues are why the murder rates are soaring in Chicago, despite the fact it has some of the toughest gun control laws in the country. People issues are why 72% of African American children are born to unwed mothers and people issues are why one of three children in this country is growing up in a household without a father.

Dealing with people issues is hard. Demanding a symbol be banned and demonizing one particular section of the country as backward and racist is easy.

So the fact many here are venting about the latter two items isn't at all surprising.

Why are some so determined to defend "just a piece of cloth" styled after something "on the side (sic) of a car" in an old TV show? Could it be that that they know that it is a powerful symbol offensive to many and just want to keep perpetuating that?

I call it a piece of cloth because the last time I checked, a piece of cloth is not able to get up, pull a trigger and murder 9 people.

I live in a state where the cofederate flag is part of our state flag. But yet when bad times come, we don't fight and we don't paint useless words on govt property. We ban together and get through it. Katrina, F4 tornados and the murder of two police officers proved that. When there is a black murder or a white murder we don't blame flags or the gun, we sctually blame the murderer.

Chicago's gun laws have nothing to do with the violence in Chicago and I would say that the make-up of Chicago families do not either (a red herring IMO). Gun laws in Chicago were and are mostly toothless because there are gun shops a plenty just over the border in Indiana where guns laws are lax. For instance, a Cabela's is 30 miles south east of the Loop which is an easy drive for most folks and it's even on a bus line!

Exactly. But your truth is lost on those who are blindly lashing out at symbols because they think that will change things.

It won't.

Things will only change when --- as others have already sagely observed -- we attack the people issues behind this tragedy.

What a cheap and disgusting headline that paper used. A remark by a cousin. If someone doesn't read the whole article ( which was quite frankly turning my stomach ) they'll think that was the " reason/excuse ". The truth is he is evil, hateful, and a murdering racist. Period.

I'm 99.99% sure the gang-bangers are not going to Cabella's to get their firearms :headache:

To me, the most frightening part about reading his words is I've seen some of the same type of thoughts and opinions in the many threads on this board that deal with racially charged topics, obviously not to the extreme he went with it and not with the call to violence he felt. I'm not talking about every single thing he said but there are definitely things in there that have been echoed in a more subdued way on many threads.

I wouldn't be so sure that the guns were not purchased from Cabellas and other Indiana gun stores legally by someone.

I have a question, how does anyone know he is mentally ill? He has not even been evaluated yet. So to say he is mentally ill is speculating. He knew what he was doing.

Exactly. There is no diagnosis of mental illness as of yet. He was just a hateful, racist person. He targeted black people because he was a racist. He embraced racist symbols, symbols that help racist people identify others that are like minded and make it easier for them to perpetuate the hate.

Yes, it is always very predictable on this board which posters will show up and how they will comment on these threads. It's the same people and same things every time. Yet I am sure they don't think they have any bias.

I could bite at this ridiculous bait, but I won't. Let the facts about certain lives the mainstream media apparently feels don't matter (because they never mention the carnage) speak for themselves:

I don't think anyone can disagree that America lost eight citizens in this incident we could not afford to lose, people would made the world a better place because of the type of people they were.

A question for you: why are so many so determined to defend defacing a monument to war dead? Is it possible they want to spread pain and insult and enjoy doing that?

What is even more predictable is the group who shows up and attempts to "out" the racists. It's the same people and the same things every time.

It is, best I can tell, some sort of self-gratifying measure that makes the accusers feel superior. Of course, the standard is rigged to where if you disagree with this group you are considered a racist.
