Unexpected Savings...keep it, or upgrade?

Hi! This is my first post here, but I've been browsing the boards for about 6 months. Warning, this will be really long!!! We have come across an unexpected way to save on our vacation and I don't know whether I should pocket it for more "free spending" while in the parks or if I should take the opportunity to upgrade to a deluxe hotel (which we will not likely afford in the future). Here are the details:

We are a family of 4, me, DH, and 2 kiddos, ages 6 and 3. We are traveling with my dad and my sister at the end of April. We are currently booked at POR, which I chose after a ridiculous amount of research and hmming and hawing. :) We are on a tight budget, and had plans to save wherever we could on dining, etc, for example by sharing meals or ordering sides, and eating breakfast in the room.

So, my sister just got hired on full time by Disney (corporate, not parks). She will be receiving a Silver Pass (free entrance for 3 of us) as well as 50% off hotels (only based on limited availability). The savings for us having 3 of us get in free is about $1000. We went through and priced out our options for deluxes, and the only two even close to being affordable for us are Wilderness Lodge and Boardwalk. WL would cost us $350 more total, BW would cost us $475 more total.

What I know: WL has a boat to MK, a plus with two small kids. It also has a boat to CR and the monorail. Plus, the boat to Ft Wilderness means even more activity options for the evenings we have planned to not be at a park. Downside: The theme is PNW, and we live in the PNW. I doubt my kids would care about that, and DH doesn't see why I think this is a problem, but it IS a little weird to me to leave here to arrive at a resort that looks like here, lol! It's not a deal killer, just something I am pondering.

Boardwalk is intriguing, with easy access to the Boardwalk itself, plus walking distance to epcot and boat ride to DHS. I don't know if the Boardwalk will be great for the kiddos or not, but I guess dining options are nice. The rooms at BW look a lot brighter and nicer than those at WL. The pool, however, looks not awesome, and the clown is just scary and ugly! Walking to Epcot is a plus, for sure, and a boat to DHS sounds fun. We will be at Epcot and MK more than the other parks, though.

Last, if we just stay put in our current resort, we would have a large amount of cushion money while in the parks. That would mean dining without worrying about prices, more souvenir money, etc. It would also mean buses to every park, which is true of all mod resorts, and I knew that when I booked it. I don't know how hard the reality of this will be with two little ones, with planned park breaks for resting at the resort in the afternoon for at least a few of the days. I hear both great things and terrible things about the bus system.

I'd love some opinions. My dad, sister and DH all are open to either. I am the planner for this trip, and I am the one most concerned with the $$ and how and where to use them. We are usually tight on money and this is something long saved for and put together with Christmas money, etc. Saving all that money sounds really great, but on the other hand, who knows if my sister will still be working where she's working in a few years when we want to go again!!

Thoughts?

ETA: I should have mentioned that we won't get a discount at POR because there are no cast member rooms left. If we went to POFQ, we would save $400 on the total price. So we could also "downgrade" (in my opinion....I know some people love that one, but it just looks so much less fun than POR).

(which we will not likely afford in the future)
I would upgrade if it's your only chance. Maybe...

Wilderness Lodge and Boardwalk. WL would cost us $350 more total, BW would cost us $475 more total.
WL is impressive. Very impressive. Your kids might like Whispering Canyon Cafe and maybe a campfire at FW. If you could fit Hoop-Dee-Doo in the budget that would be a great experience for the whole family.

The slide at the Boardwalk is probably the best. But yeah, there's that clown. The entertainers on the Boardwalk can be fun for the kids, but you might have to change your schedule a bit to catch them.

I would seriously consider the Mod with Hoop-Dee-Doo instead of a Deluxe as it is such a nice "multi-generation" family event. I wouldn't worry too much about POFQ vs. POR.

I would go with BW or Wl. I prefer BW, but I have never been with kids as young as yours. I really did not care for pofq. If your sister has to go with you for you to get the discount, and this is your only chance to upgrade. I would take advantage of the opportunity to upgrade.

My preference has always been POFQ over Riverside so I personally would not consider it "downgrading". Know everyone has different opinions on this as with anything else :goodvibes But, having said that, because I am a very conservative and practical person when it comes to finances, I would save the extra $$$ The setting to me is so much more personal and cozy and I love the themeing. You would still have all the perks, but with less money ;) Whatever you decide have great vacation :woohoo:

If this might be your only chance to upgrade I say go for it. I am a deluxe girl so my choice would be the BW since we love the Epcot area. You would be close to the two parks, the pool is really nice (the clown never bothered us or our kids) and the dining options available at the resorts and Epcot can't be beat. The kids would be able to run around and play in the sand area over by the BC when you are walking around the area. If the BC was available that would even be a great choice. You definitely wouldn't be disappointed with any of the deluxes if that is the way you decide to go.

I would stay at POR and use the extra money for spending, that way you can eat whatever and you will not spend your time telling your kids no whenever they ask to buy souvenirs...You need to ask yourself are your kids going to care which resort? Probably not....Also ask yourself do you really want to go to disney and worry about if you are runnning out of money. Whatever you choose have fun and enjoy!!:dance3:

Stay with your reservation and enjoy the money cushion.
Congratulations to your sister!

Have you called yet to see if the free dining code is attached to your name or the other people in your group? Many people are getting it for April. Come over to the Disney Discount forum. for advise.

I would go with POR and eat better. I don't like to stay in resorts that look too much like where I'm from, it doesn't seem like a vacation. I've never wanted to stay in WL because I like more southern or tropical foilage.

Because this is your first trip, I would keep your reservation or switch to POFQ(our favorite moderate - kids love the dragon slide) and use your extra money for food and souveniers. I would imagine you will spend most of your time in the parks, so I wouldn't spend the extra $ this trip. We are no longer park commandos and spend a lot of time back at the resort. I would go, spend without worrying, and if you come back having saved some money, stash it away for your next trip!:goodvibes

Boardwalk!! Walk to Epcot, can walk to HS. The rooms are sweet.

We have stayed at both WL and Boardwalk- (I also come from an area very similar in theming to the WL wooded mountainous and yes it's in NJ:rotfl2:) Our opinion was just that is was too much like home. We didn't love it. It was dark and just not our cup of tea.
The Boardwalk is bright and beachy. More of my style.

Hi!

Boardwalk is intriguing, with easy access to the Boardwalk itself, plus walking distance to epcot and boat ride to DHS. I don't know if the Boardwalk will be great for the kiddos or not, but I guess dining options are nice.

We are fans of POFQ, so with the additional $400 savings on the total price I would switch to this resort. The switch will allow you the freedom of having the extra spending money, the ability to say yes to something the kids want along your travels, or perhaps even that one extra special dinner - that you might not otherwise have been able to do. The benefits of POFQ are that all the amenities are within easy walking distance of the bus stop and food court, and the atmosphere is wonderful.

Happy Planning!

This is a tough decision and I feel your pain. I've had precisely this conundrum a few times. Every time I've gone with staying at the Mods (Where we always stay) and pocket that extra money for other things. That could mean The Pirates League for any pirates, The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique for any princesses, dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table, renting Sea Raycers, or Surry bikes at a resort, an unexpected day trip to one of the water parks, etc....The possibilities are endless. I prefer to have ample spending money as it runs out very fast. Especially for souveniers and unexpected surprises. Don't get me wrong, the deluxe resorts are beautiful and convenient and I myself and taking advantage of a 40% off discount code to stay at the Poly on our upcoming trip. But I tend to agree with a PP: Which will your children appreciate more? A deluxe resort, or maybe an extra souvenier to bring home? The answer will be different for different families. And as for "Downgrading" to POFQ, I disagree. (Of course it just my opinion.) We've stayed at every Mod resort. CSR is my absolute fave for several reasons, but POFQ is a close second. The resort is so beautiful, quiet, the pool is fun with the dragon slide, the boat access to DTD, and lets not forget the Biegnets at the food court. YUMMY!!! I'm sure you've done your homework and know that POR, and POFQ are sister resorts so you may enjoy the ammenities of both resorts regardless of where you stay. Just know that wherever you stay, your trip will be fabulous! Good luck!:goodvibes

We love the lodge, as for dining better...Disney has never been about the food....we feel most of the TS are over priced and medicore at best, and dining plans don't interest us at all, don't want our vacation run by schedules and the clock and credits....

Even souveniors, how much can you actually buy...though you say you come from the PNW, the lodge is fabulous, far exceeds what you may encounter back home....just the lobby itself will take your breath away....we base our stays on location then price.....WL being on the lakes, boat acess to the MK, CR and FW can't be beat.....it's one of the cheapest deluxes on property and the other being AKL...which had no interest for us thought we did try it once and couldn't wait to get out of there....WL has only 700+ rooms, very compact, easy to get around, great pool, movies on the beach, nightly campfire and smores, electrical water pageant nightly....off the beaten path with few day visitors gawking around....ideal in many ways especially the location to the MK for the little ones....we spend more time in the MK, and we're old people, children grown and gone....

I would do WL all the way. It is a fab resort. try for bunk beds. My reasons: the Lodge itself is awesome. everything in one building, boat to MK & CR, better pool, whispering canyon the kids love it, balcony with kids it is great.

And did I say WL is the best:lovestruc

OR - have you thought about a cabin at Fort Wilderness? Same boat access as Wilderness Lodge and a LOT more to do at your doorstep. The cabin is private, with no one running over, under or around you at all hours. Separate sleeping area so the little ones can nap is a major plus.

Thanks, everyone. Regarding the post on the dining plan, no, we can't do a dining plan with a cast member discount on the room, as far as we know, so our dining will be regular.

For those that mentioned Beach Club, we'd love to stay there but the price would be $850 more than what we are paying right now, and we do want to keep at least some of the savings money as cushion money. We figure if we upgrade to something less than $500 extra, we at least keep a $500 cushion.

Souvenirs aren't going to be a huge spending point - we just won't have enough room in our luggage to take a lot home with us. Dining is the main area we could upgrade our spending in, BUT, we still plan to eat breakfast in the room (faster, healthier), and we try to avoid processed foods/fast food, so we wouldn't buy a ton of extra snacks in the parks anyway. Mainly we'd get to eat more of the expensive dishes.

Can anyone compare the bus transportation from BWI vs WL? Would one be easier to get back to for mid day naps than the others (not including Hollywood Studios, we're not planning a whole day there). Is it feasible to get back to POR for mid-day naps?

Lots more to think about!

I'm always a fan of a financial cushion for later but that's probably because I watch too many consumer financial advice shows. If you do opt to upgrade then have a great time with that too. :)

Larkin121, :welcome: to the DISboards  I am another French Quarter lover  Happy planning no matter what you decide :tinker:

I LOVE Wilderness lodge, but in your case, I think I'd move over to POFQ and save even more money! The dragon slide is a blast, the resort is small and charming, and the money you save will go a long way to giving you a fabulous trip. Believe me, your kids aren't going to care WHAT the resort themeing is as long as there's a pool!

Yes, you can go back for a nap! If I go to early entry, it's usually crowded and I'm *done* (and done in) by 1 pm. I have some lunch and go back to the resort for the afternoon. Sometimes I go out again about 4 or 5 (usually to a different park) and sometimes not.

I would def. go for the upgrade. Who needs food? J/k I would find ways to scrape on eating. My kids are not big eaters so a backpack with snacks and a good breakfast and dinner would suffice.
