Unemployment

The $600 is from the Federal Government and yes, at this point it is a one time pay out, at $600 per week, not $600 total.
And it's taxable income. You can choose to have the taxes taken out weekly or figure it out next year.

People who had their emoloyment impacted are also eligible for expanded food stamp benefits, so you might also explore that if youve lost a job or had a cut in hours

your Daughter will apply for unemployment in the state where she works not the state she lives. There is a minimum you have to make. Google saids it’s 3500 in a year. But don’t trust google. Here in New Jersey if you haven’t applied for unemployment in over a year you will do the long form. In New Jersey they take your wages from say I applied in April 1 2020 I haven’t done it in a year. They will take my wages from a year and a half ago to 6 months ago. So it will be from oct 1 2018 to sep 30 2019. That’s what they will.Base my unemployment pay on.

have your daughter apply. Worse they can say is no. Remember to apply in the state she worked in , not the state she lives.

Ds19 applied in NJ and it said if you apply in April, they look at your income from 1/1/2019 to 12/31/19 and you need to have earned at least $10,000 during that time or have had at least 20 weeks of earning $200/week. The website has a chart that shows which employment window they look at depending on when you apply. If he applied in March, like he should have, they would have looked at Oct 1, 2018 to Sept 30, 2019 . You are correct that you apply in the state where you work. That is where your unemployment taxes from your paycheck go.

Anyway, each state has its own criteria. Anyone even curious about applying should thoroughly read the website to find out. Seriously, I would apply unless you know you're not even close to being eligible. Worst they can say is no.

Pa is the worst. My daughter lives in Pa and was laid off 3/12 and has not received one cent yet. And no one answers the phone or their email. I’m not sure how government of Pa expects people to go six weeks without income. The federal stimulus was actually quicker and easier than having to deal with Pa!
Does her employer know she was applying? I applied in very late March, maybe 29th, and already got one payment from regular unemployment and a CARES payment. Has she looked up her status to see if it was approved? They did ask for a lot of contact methods with my employer, phone & email address, and I let my manager know ahead of time that I would be applying. I'd rather her be expecting the call from them, if they do actually call. Who knows? Maybe they're so swamped they're not even calling each employer.
Creepy thing though, when I helped ds19 apply on NJ website, it already KNEW all of his employers and listed them for him.

The state *should* know all of your employers. They also know how much you got paid every quarter you worked. I am an accountant in Florida and I have filed hundreds (maybe thousands) of state unemployment reports for clients. You have to itemize every employee by name and SSN, and how much they made in the quarter that's being reported. That's how they figure out how much you're due in unemployment compensation - average salary over the past X number of months/years.

Maybe I was a bit surprised. Usually one hand doesn’t know what the other is doing.
PA website made me enter employer, salary, start date etc even though I’ve been there almost 30 years.

I am lucky, only having to take a week off without pay, but that will qualify me for unemployment and CARES act money. They are staggering people between now and the end of June. My week off isn't until June, and some of us with our week off at the end of furloughs are concerned if the CARES act money will be gone by the time we furlough. Of course now sure WHERE all this money is coming from. I will be within days of my 63rd birthday when this happens, my first period of unemployment ever.

My company doesn't have the best track record with trying to save money. During the recession during the Obama Presidency they did across the board pay cuts, layoffs, hiring freezes and furloughs. They probably would have saved money if they had just done ONE of those things. Some angry stockholders got the CEO to admit that combination actually cost them money. Furloughs, layoffs and hiring freezes meant projects didn't get done by deadlines due to a lack of staff, and many of those projects had penalties if deadlines were not met. And of course you can't cover furloughed employees with over time, but they had to cover vacant positions with overtime. I ended up working 4 days one week with a furlough day, and 6 days the next with 8 hours overtime. Most of us made more money that year!
Sheesh. Yeah, that plan clearly wasn't thought out. And nobody was heard who warned otherwise. Sounds familiar.

I'm about 10 years behind you but I know what you mean about it being the first time ever unemployed. October will be 30 yrs at my job. The only way to get this much time lounging around the house was to either have a baby or have surgery, :lmao: neither of those do you feel like yourself afterward. It's a strange feeling but I'm thankful I do still have a job to return to once our hospital can open more and function for other purposes besides COVID.
I like reading and waking up without an alarm but looking forward to life being normal again.
