My dear friend/neighbor just received a Fed Ex package that the store she works in will be closing end of next month.

No transfers/seniority thing being considered. They will contact the Labor State Dept. to expedite matters. Don't quote me word for word but basically they are all being layed off (at least 150 employees - some p/t, some f/t).

She worked there p/t in the evenings and has a different daytime p/t job. Would she be able to collect unemoployment for that eve. job?

I don't think so but really don't know the answer.

I told her to call now to find out now and not to wait regardless.

TIA.

I wouldn't think so but she needs to check the rules in her state. If she doesn't qualify for unemployment, her new lower overall income could qualify her for other aid though, if she feels she needs additional help until she finds another p/t job.

Thank you and I will forward her the website.

She would have definitely qualified for the benefit since she has been there 15years. Again, something tells me no with the other p/t job.

Luckly she has the other p/t job and her dh has a job. It would help tremendously if she could collect at least until her treatments are done and she can look for another new one. I know they have had a lot of bills the past year because of her medicall issues (colon cancer). Not sure how flexible a new employer would be with her appointments/not feeling well and if she would even find a job right now in the first place also due to the economy.

Thank you again.

Did you or did you not read the FAQ link I posted? It clearly answers your questions.

She would not qualify for unemployment if she is still employed, even if it is with just one employer instead of two. Techincally she is not "unemployed".

Maybe it's different in NY, but years ago I worked for a company who did not lay people off, but they cut their hours and the employees were able to collect benefits for the hours that they lost.

I can't seem to get towards the bottom of the page - I did read a majority of it. I need to sign off and go through Mozilla (too many aol problems).

You answered it now anyway which is exactly what I thought. I did email it to her to let her read it and will forward another email (we were already on the phone twice this morning for about an hour) - She is off and probably resting which is what she tries to do when she can when she is off or in between jobs. I give her a lot of credit for working two jobs in the middle of everything - but now I am rambling and that's another story.

thank you wvjules.

They will be shutting their doors next month. Target is supposed to/rumored to be taking over part of the shopping center. I got lucky and was transferred when this new company took over a little over a year ago.

Maybe yes. In our state we were allowed to earn some money. When you went over that benefits stopped or reduced.

Now this comes from memory when I had to collect 15 plus years ago. And of course things fade with time.
