In the past I have highly recommended using Olympus' refurb program through Ebay due the savings that can be had, but my 850sw refurb failed durning our second snorkle trip, and since it was past the 90 day warranty.
I was informed it will cost $104 to get it fixed. Buyer beware, we did not use the camera till our cruise so it was in pristene condition from the factory. I didn't like the attitude given to me by their customer service, it was like I bought a clearence item.

I recommend the Olympus as well...we have the 770 and the new Stylus 8000..I love both cameras and the versatility they offer...we have used ours ALOT from crusing to Snorkeling and pool time here at home...not to mention all the places we have taken it and not had it in the water...However with that said...the 770 has leaked 2 times since we bought it...we bought it new 2 yrs ago...the 1st time it was under warranty and turn around time was Fassssstttt...less that 2 weeks...we did NOT replace the seals as they recommend doing at least once a yr..so the 2nd leak could have very been our fault. The bad thing about it, we were on Vacation in the Islands when it happened...we bought another one while we were there...and this time we bought the underwater housing as well...it allows you to take the camera further down ( if you dive ) and use it as much as do. I would suggest buying a housing for it...and protect your investment. The 770 Housing is no longer available...we tried for days to find one before we went on vacation to avoid this from happening ..this time...we wanted to make sure we had one...just incase..:rolleyes1

So a question you should ask is do I need to replace the seals and how often? If you need to do this yearly to be sure to have an underwater camera when you need it this maybe more costly than a model that needs little or no maintance.

Hi Everyone!!!

This Thread is wonderful!!! so happy I found it!

We are going on our first DCL in July!!! :yay: I currently have a Cannon dslr, but need to take a point and shoot for our trip. I am so torn between the tough 6000 and the Cannon D10. DH wanted to get the olympus 8000
but I felt at the end of the day there is not much improvement between the 6000 and the 8000.

What do you guys think?

AWESOME PIX!!!!
Can I ask you (or anyone :thumbsup2 ) 2 questions? Okay 3.
How easy was it to frame your shot underwater? Can you see the screen easily?

I'm worried about dropping the camera. Is there something you can attach to it to make it float if it gets away from you or do you just use a strap?

I bought a watertight bag for my regular camera and used it today. Unless there is some way to adjust for it outside of fiddling w/ Photoshop (which I'm really good at but don't feel like doing) and even in that, you don't get the color you can caputure w/ this camera and it's underwater mode. :lovestruc

and 3rd...HOLY BUCKETS! Where can you ride on the beach?!?!?!? I want to do that some day. BAD! DSs and DH don't ride though. I don't care. I want to!

This wins the CUTEST OF THE CUTE award! OMG! Where were your snorkeling to see little baby sea turtles? Or forgive me if that was answered already and in my overwhelming zeal to say how darling these guys were, I just missed it. Wouldn't be the first time.:rolleyes1

I purchased a wrist strap for my camera that resembles a orange life vest and if I let go of the strap it floats. Its a very good investment, might save your camera.

We just got the 8000 and the wrist strap and free memory card from buydig.com and can't wait to use it.........

These photos are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your supposed to replace the seals!! I never read the instructions (Bad me) so can someone tell me who needs to do this and what the cost is. I will not snorkle with my camera until Oct 2010 but do not want to risk a lea. However this will allow me the time to get this done to protect my investment depending on the cost

Thanks! My dd took that one. I love the way it came out. We were snorkeling. We were doing the Doubloon Sail and Snorkel on St. Thomas.

With my mask on it was very easy to see the d10 screen underwater. I know a lot of people love the floating strap from Amazon. I have read it doesn't work well with the new Olympus cameras, and the d10 weighs the same, so I didn't try it. I'd love to hear from someone that's used it.

The d10 does have a great strap you can tighten around your wrist (kind of like a wii controller strap, but even more secure). I was pulled by a dolphin on my dolphin swim with it dangling from my wrist and I wasn't remotely afraid I would lose it. My kids swam all over with it too. They knew they couldn't use it without it tightened around their wrist.

Your trip sounds like paradise! I'd like to order one of those vacations straight up please. ;) ALL the toppings please and make my completely loaded like a baked potato!:cheer2:

THANKS for all the tips. LOTS to think about and chew on :flower3: ...not the least of which is why we are taking a shorter cruise! :upsidedow:guilty: grumble I SO wanted to go to St. Thomas. I fear :scared: :rotfl: that the 2011 bookings become available while we are on our cruise in Nov. Anyone wanna place bets on if I'll be able to resist booking?:rolleyes1

PS
Do you have a higher res copy of that little turtle and bigger turtle photo? May I steal them for scrapbooking if you can dig them up for me? PM me. I'll give you my e-mail address.

1. I could easily see the screen while snorkling and being underwater. Very easy to frame the picture, unless a wave comes and bumps you!

2. The strap it comes with is very nice. Just like someone else explained, it is adjustable just like the Wii remotes so you can make it tight on your wrist. I never felt like I was going to drop it because it was securely on my wrist.

3. We rode on the beach at Mr. Sanchos in Cozumel. We rode in the jungle most of the time but did get to ride on the beach for a short ride.

Thanks for all the great posts and photos! I didn't even think about an underwater digital until I saw this thread and now I'm off to find the best deal on the Canon D10. I like that you can also use the camera to take great photos out of the water. We have a Canon Digital Rebel SLR that we love but it's too bulky to carry around the ship. We'll use it on excursions, but plan on using a small point and shoot for the ship. I have a Kodak Easyshare that I'm not happy with (too slow) so I think I'll upgrade to the Canon D10 for my point and shoot and have the extra benefit of being able to use it in/near water.

When you find the best deal on the camera...PLEASE post it here! I've been trying to do the same thing, but am so busy with annual inventory, and my dd's daily All-Star softball games!

THANKS!! :flower3:

Anyone interested in the Olympus cameras, Beach Camera is having a sale on the refurbished units. Refurbished doesn't mean anything was wrong with it, just that they can't sell it as new for a variety of reasons. Could be the camera didn't work, or could just be the customer wasn't happy with it. All the refurbished ones are fully tested and come with a warranty.

We got our Intova ic600 and so far it seems great! The pictures it takes (land) are better than what my old 4mb Kodak has taken (for the many years I've used it) -but we haven't tested it underwater yet. The real test will be the pictures it takes underwater, especially deeper when DH is diving. We'll see... but for the barely over $100 price- even if it only works out to be a great digi camera (on land) it won't be a total waste of money since I needed a new one anyway. :)
I guess I'll have to report back after it's been on it's maiden voyage to the depths DH wants to take it. :)
(The only negative I can say so far is that the ad showed it silver, as well as the box it came in, but it was not a pleasant surprise to open the packaging and find it's a black camera. :( I didn't really want a black camera)

I bought the Olympus 8000 and the Olympus strap (the orange one) yesterday from Best Buy. I took it to the pool today and the camera and the strap performed perfectly. Contrary to what some have said, the strap works really well (at least it does on my 8000). I even gave the camera a slight toss and the strap didn't even go under an inch. Maybe they improved them because of the heavier weights of the newer cameras?? I don't know but I'm happy with mine!

This is the strap --> http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...608038&IcsCsid=39-413-7-29943-0-12163-419-0-1
