so last night my parents were watching "That's Dance!" on PBS. that was MGM's sequel to "That's Entertainment" and "That's Entertainment, Part II". you know, people like Liza Minelli, Gene Kelly and etc. narrating the history of dance in the movies, while they show clips from famous MGM musicals. the emphasis is on dance numbers from the 1940's and 1950's, when MGM was in its glory.

at the end of the movie, Gene Kelly shows clips from such "current" films as "Saturday Night Fever", "Fame" and "Flashdance".

my 13 year old walked in when Kelly was talking about "Singin' In the Rain" and stayed until the end of the movie.

the last dance in the movie isn't about conventional film. it's about a "new art form", the music video. Gene Kelly says something about "a young and talented cdancer/choreographer who will be delighting audiences for years to come."

and then you see Michael Jackson's "Beat It".

and my daughter watched the video, probably the first time that she'd ever seen Michael in his heyday.

she'd been wondering how that "freaky looking guy" got to be so famous.

now she knows.

:teeth:

Yes MJ was something in the mid-80's, wasn't he? Anytime they have a program spolighting his career I am amazed at how beautiful he once was. DD can't believe his appearance from those days either. Their generation will never understand or appreciate what Michael did for pop music.

Yeah, but can any one explain to me how he looked at himself in the mirror in the 80's and this nice looking guy looked back and said "I have to destroy my nose and do whatever he did to his skin"? He was good looking as far as I could tell. I just don't get it!

So much talent...and so misguided. It makes me sad. I'll always love what he represented before things got so messed up. There are many parallels to Elvis with Jacko.
