Unconfirmed report that The Enchanted Tiki Room will return to its original form

I've heard a lot about the return of the Orange Bird too. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with sponsorship, or if it is just Disney slapping his image on merchandise to satisfy us geeks? :confused3

We saw the "original" version at Disneyland after seeing the "Under New Management" version at Walt Disney World. There's no doubt in my mind, they are changing it back because the original version is simply better.

:tinker: Jennifer

Nobody else thought the songs were catchy? I love both shows and had fun at each. -shrug-

I do. I actually like the variation of "Friend Like Me" that Iago sings, but I don't like it nearly enough to not want the original version back.

Yup, Friend like Me is fun, but definitely not good enough to want to keep Under New Management around over the original. Tiki birds is a sentimental favorite of mine, I'm sooooooooooooooo looking forward to seeing the original again.

On my last couple trips to Disneyland, Enchanted Tiki Room was a highlight simply because of the New Management at WDW. It really was special to see it in that form again.

The more I think about it, the less I trust that it's going to happen exactly as we hope. I believe they will take Iago and Zazu out, but I can't imagine they will go back to exactly how it was; it just isn't in Disney Imagineering's nature to do that. Take the different incarnations of Journey into Imagination for example. Instead of going back from a bad version, they try to correct it with yet another new version.

I have a Little Orange Bird plastic bank from the early seventies. I do not know if it came from Magic Kingdom or someplace else in Florida. I was in high school, but memories are still blurry.

Maybe you got it at the Ocala Welcome Center, if you drove to WDW like we did. It's possible.

I'm the same way. For whatever reason some of my clearest, earliest memories of the MK involve The Tiki Room, and that Orange Bird.

Of course, now as I sit here typing this, I can't quite remember how they were connected. He was part of a display in the "Q" outside of the Tiki Room, right ?

Maybe those memories aren't so clear after all.

At any rate, here's an OLD commercial with Anita Bryant and The Orange Bird. (Oh, the comments I could make... ;) )

I sure wasn't gonna make the Anita Bryant joke! :rotfl2:

I feel the same way. I much prefer the original version. I never liked Iago interrupting the tiki birds to interject insults and make a "Friend Like Me" parody. I don't want to hear Gilbert Gottfried singing. Ever.

That page is awesome! But tell me if I'm hallucinating, but didn't Sunshine Tree Terrace sell juice drinks in plastic containers shaped like the fruit they contained? I thought I remembered an orange one and a purple one shaped like a bunch of grapes.

Hmm...

No, that's no hallucination, I remember that as well. I also remember the taste of the juice tasted of the plastic it came in... I can remember driving my Mom nuts asking her to save all the empty fruit shaped containers in her purse so we could take them home with us.

"You'll just throw them away" she'd say.

Of course, she was right.

Oh... and on that "Widen Your World" site I posted, just click on their logo at the top of the page, and then click on "Site map" and it will take you to a list of ALL sorts of Disney memories long gone.

It's an awesome site. :wizard:

It's gotta be true. Just heard it (and the GF DVC story) from a bus driver today. :)

I'm sure it has zero to do with Gilbert Godfried's recent remarks. There are celebrities that have done far worse things and are still around as voices in the parks. Tim Allen was convicted of cocaine trafficking, for example, which is a tad worse than getting mad at a comedian for telling jokes.

We drove from South Jersey to North Miami every year to visit my grandparents. I remember the orange juice at the welcome center as we entered FLorida on 95.

I have my Little Orange Bird plastic bank in front of me now.
The back of his head says "Florida Orange Bird". The stopper that keeps the money in says "Made in Hong Kong". At the bottom of the back is embossed "Walt Disney Productions". So maybe it did indeed come from the Magic Kingdom!

I remember getting a orange shaped plastic "fruit" with orange drink at the Miami Seaquarium.

The Orange Bird brings me back to my childhood, first visit to WDW.

Me too! As does this pic (the only one I could find on the interweb).

I hope they go back to the original version. The new one is crappy...fine for kids, I suppose, but unimaginative, annoying fluff...and the old one is better for kids, anyway.

I don't know (or care) what Gilbert Godfried said about Japan, but I never thought he was funny and couldn't stand his voice.

Amongst my pretty extensive Disney collection, I have half a shelf of Orange Bird memorabilia. I always loved the lesser known characters like that. A recent addition to my collection is a new pin showing the Orange Bird wearing Mickey ears. I thought that was cute.

The "Under New Management" had grown on me over the years but it would be neat to see the original show return.

I'd also like to see Carousel of Progress switch back to the "Now is the time" theme song. I know "Great big beautiful tomorrow" is the original from the World's Fair, but I remember the other song from my early visits to WDW.

I sure hope they bring back the tikis for the queue as well. When I heard about the fire, the thought of them taking the Tiki Room it back to the original was a mild though, I hope. When I heard they were not re-opening for months I was sure they were either going to bring back the old or do something completely different.

Fingers crossed!

The article states that it is to reopen in August, but most of the websites state it is scheduled to reopen at the end of June. I pray it is infact June, because we will be there at the end of July. I will be disappointed if I don't get to see it when we go. :confused3

Fingers crossed right along with you...

But, being realistic, one has to think in terms of marketability.

The "old" Tiki Room has none. There's no market for those birds in replicated stuffed animal form, no desire for anyone to download songs from the old soundtrack.

But.

Aladdin is due for Blu-ray release probably next year, and that's where the "Under New Management" tie-in comes into play.

There's a whole new generation of little kids for whom "lago" is an entirely new character, and what better way of getting them introduced to the film than through the Tiki Room at the park.

*sigh*

Hate to be cynical here, but the more I think about it... If there's any change at all to the "new" show, it will be more "Aladdin specific", offering the ultimate "infomercial" to sell new copies of Aladdin.

lol.... almost as good as this statement: "We already have a Disneyland! Walt Disney World will be lucky to be open in five years"....
