Has anyone found and retrieved unclaimed funds from the state?

I found my moms name on the site and not sure how to proceed.
She did not have an estate but it looks as if they need a lot of proof. I understand the death cert., or obit. Can anyone tell me what a Report of Newly discovered assets is?
Thanks
Lisa

Your state's Treasurer' office should be able to help you. I had to get the death certificate and fill out a form stating I was solely entitled to the funds or get all my siblings to sign it saying they didn't object to me claiming the money. One of them took over and we ended up with a lot more than just the couple of unclaimed checks, but it took about a year to work it all out.

Good Luck. I know someone that saw a relatives name, they alerted the relative who did Not want to get involved:confused3 then we learned that they had other accounts in arrears and that with that small check...came confirmation that they would have to "man up" and pay back other debt...they left it unclaimed....unreal, right...so sometimes I guess it can be the proverbial "can of worms!"

Yep, ask the Treasurer's office for help. I have done this a few times in my line of work. Once had 20+ heirs involved, didn't do it right and the Treasurer's office helped turn it around. Still not all the heirs responded to get their $80 or so.

I had unclaimed funds from the state of New Hampshire where I used to live. It was around $20 and the hoops I had to jump through to get it made it not worth my time.

I had unclaimed funds under my name, filled out the form (this was in NJ) and I got my money! It was easy.

I claimed some from the State of Missouri that was my dad's (he died in 2003). I had to send a copy of the death certificate and a "family tree" (form on their web site). They had to split it between me, my sister, and my nephew (since his mom - my other sister - passed away). But I didn't have to wait for them to send in their request to get my third. Don't know if they ever claimed theirs, but it was fairly easy getting mine. It did take about 3 months, though.
