I'm guessing the reason they were "dumb" enough to do it to someone with lights on is because they are good enough kids to worry about waking someone up. They chose you BECAUSE you were still up.
I'm also guessing if you find your closest neighborhood child who had a sleepover last night, you'll have your culprit. Mom and Dad probably didn't have a clue. Naughty kids making bad choices egged on by their friends. Not exactly a new scenario.
My youngest was dumb enough to try a ding dong ditch when he had friends over. It was broad daylight, and their victim was a neighbor with a large picture window. They made it about 5 feet up the neighbor's driveway, then chickened out. My son was in trouble, but frankly I was much more angry at my neighbor who called AND then came over, ranting about gangs etc. Both stories matched, they literally were less than 5 ft onto his property when they thought better of it and turned around, yet he was ready to send them to juvenille detention. I'm still mad thinking about it. The upshot of it is he has to do his own yardwork now because none of my kids will step foot in his yard. (My older son had been doing their yardwork for the last 4 years.)
The kids were wrong and it's certainly worth talking to their parents if you figure out who it is. But please remember they are kids who made a poor choice not criminals.
