Unbelievable Neighborhood kids

I'm guessing the reason they were "dumb" enough to do it to someone with lights on is because they are good enough kids to worry about waking someone up. They chose you BECAUSE you were still up.

I'm also guessing if you find your closest neighborhood child who had a sleepover last night, you'll have your culprit. Mom and Dad probably didn't have a clue. Naughty kids making bad choices egged on by their friends. Not exactly a new scenario.

My youngest was dumb enough to try a ding dong ditch when he had friends over. It was broad daylight, and their victim was a neighbor with a large picture window. They made it about 5 feet up the neighbor's driveway, then chickened out. My son was in trouble, but frankly I was much more angry at my neighbor who called AND then came over, ranting about gangs etc. Both stories matched, they literally were less than 5 ft onto his property when they thought better of it and turned around, yet he was ready to send them to juvenille detention. I'm still mad thinking about it. The upshot of it is he has to do his own yardwork now because none of my kids will step foot in his yard. (My older son had been doing their yardwork for the last 4 years.)

The kids were wrong and it's certainly worth talking to their parents if you figure out who it is. But please remember they are kids who made a poor choice not criminals.

I would have called the police.

In retrospect you are right. There were many times I thought of doing this. We had not lived here that long, and I guess I was giving her a break because I really did like her a lot. That incident never happened again, in fact nothing that serious ever happened again.

I would bet money that he will be arrested by the time he is 18. Both of his parents didn't have time to discipline him and he is not a good kid by nature. They were too busy partying and or working. At least now he is Florida. I often wonder how the little girl is going to grow up, too. It is actually very sad, if I can get over how much I detested that boy.

Nothing like a little public humiliation, it goes a long way.lol. Too bad the Op can't rig up a thing when the doorbell is rung especially at night that paint could shoot out at them as in paint ball paint.

I'm a bit confused. Did the kids end up ringing the doorbell, or not? If they "chickened out" and didn't even ring the bell, why did the neighbor get so upset?

We must live in the same neighborhood. A week and a half ago the same thing happened to my family - only at 4:35 in the morning. I had been sleeping on the downstairs couch since having knee surgery (only comfortable place for me) and I was woken up by the doorbell ringing three times, a thud, and then the brat "tried" to open the front door which absolutely terrified me because I didn't think it was kids originally. I also had a lamp on so I think they thought someone was up getting ready for work and they wanted to scare them by pretending to try and break in. Ended up calling the police to patrol around and they also found trash cans knocked over throughout the neighborhood.

Nearly 14-15 years ago, my neighborhood had teenage boys who really vandalized the neighborhood - slashed tires, defecated on porches, etc. They ended up getting caught and obviously were in a lot of trouble. One kid attempted suicide before his family eventually moved. The other kid went to Iraq, killed an Iraqi soldier and stole his uniform and brought it back home. I can't believe people can be so stupid.

He saw them briefly on his property and figured out they were up to no good.

I think those same kids were in my backyard last night. :sad2:

I was sleeping so peacefully until I heard teenaged giggles in our backyard laast night. HOW (we are fenced) or WHY (there isn't a single thing in our backyard) they got back there is beyond me.

Or, maybe there weren't even there. Maybe it was one of those "phantom" things when you fall asleep. :rotfl:

My DH would have opened the door and asked them what the heck they wanted! :rotfl2:

That's crazy and scary! And perhaps we do live in the same neighborhood. ;)

I did tell DH that if I was home alone I would have called the police because it would have freaked me out being alone with the boys and IF is should ever happen again I probably will. I understand this might be a harmless prank but my safety and the feeling of well being with my two children when I am home alone comes first.

While I understand these are kids pulling a prank and not criminals I have to do what I feel is best and they are the ones that would have to deal with the consequences to their actions, not me. Again, being a mom who is home 75% of the time alone with my small children I worry about this stuff (and yes I have an alarm system), so this just put my guard up even more now that even in a nice neighborhood in the suburbs something could happen.

Haha, I didn't even notice that you're from Ohio too! A good tip the dispatcher gave us when you call the police is to not turn on any light inside or outside. You might signal to them that it was you who called the police and they may retaliate later. Having a car in the driveway is great too.
