Unbelievable! Grandma got arrested for...

I just can't get over the fact that someone was allowed to post that this kind of thing happened all the time at Southern universities including mine, which is generally considered among the top in the country.

If Jennasis is a troll, then I wanna be under her bridge. :thumbsup2 It's almost like she's typing out what's running through my mind as I read some of these posts.

I can see it now, me Jennasis and FireDancer, all grabbing goats off the bridge...

Jennasis is just trolling apparently and definitely would be the type to wanna just "duke it out" rather than handling situations in a civilized manner. :sad2:

I never said I go around punching and slapping people. I said I think getting the police involved over a little dust-up is ridiculous.

^
Jennasis was claiming people should be able to stand in their front lawn and just duke it out. There could be nothing more uncivilized.

I also never claimed to be civilized. ;) But yes...slug away folks.

Come on in...the water's great!

Apparently. We are on the wrong side of this discussion and have been peanalized for being form the South and daring to stand up for ourselves.

apparently, this is what passes for an apology these days.

I wasn't attacking DISer's or anyone here. But statistics show that these types of situations do, in fact, occur more often in the south. (family brawls, I mean). But my God, sorry to offend people here. You guys, if even are from the south, do not represent the all-American typical southerner. (You can type and articulate). But like I said, Granny did not deserve to be arrested for this incident and to have her reputation smeared through the media. That's where I stand on this issue.

this is what is known as a backhanded apology, which is actually not an apology at all, but a way of saying "i'm sorry if you think i said something wrong, but i'm right". and no, i don't accept it, because as i said, it is not an apology, just a way of restating the poster's position, which is completely and utterly false. had he ever been to the south, he'd realize we're not a bunch of drooling, inbred, knuckle-dragging morons who regularly beat our children. and for those who are waiting for the previously referenced statistics to be posted, there are no such statistics stating that situations such as those referenced by the OP occur more frequently in the south-we all know it, and the PP knew it when he posted it. this is something that was thrown in to incite controversy, and obviously, it was very successful. the best course of action is to put him on ignore.

Apology? Jolle Old Bert, THAT was an apology? Oh please! And speaking of trolling....

To the subject at hand, Granny should not have hit the kid. She likely lost her temper and lashed out. The girl being an adult can press charges if she wishes. No one else has anything to do with this family squabble.

You tell 'em! To heck if the perpetrator apologized publically about 2 dozen posts ago. We must beat this horse to death! Beat the horse, beat the horse!

OH please! Do not insult the intelligence of the good people of this board by calling that an apology.

He had absolutely no reason to insult the people of the south there was no reason what so ever to even bring it up.

Unfortunately, I cannot type and articulate what I would like to say to you because it would probably get me banned. :sad2:

ok, so it's totally alright for jolly ol bert to disparage an entire segment of the U.S. population, but responses to such posts receive infractions. i'm really very disappointed; however, i have learned my lesson, thank you. i will, from now on, refrain from opening such threads.

Yes, you will recieve an infraction for calling out a troll post but not for offending 1/4 of the American citizens and not to mention a bunch of Southern DISers. This has to be kept a family friendly board afterall

I can't believe it.......simply cannot believe it.

I think the issue in regards to the points is the "personal" part of attacks. While some could take the comment by Bert (whom doesn't seem all that jolly) as an attack it wasn't directed at a specific DISer, it was directed at a large collective of un-named people.

For example, "Pollocks are all dumb" or "all Irish people do is drink and fight" is an attack on a broad range of people, some of whom are on these boards. As far as the rules against personal attacks go it wouldn't be a violation because while you personally may fall under the collective, it wasn't directed specifically at you.

If someone were to respond to that post and specifically say something about the poster it would be a personal attack. "No, you are the one that is dumb", for example. A better, pointless response, would be to say "That sentiment is dumb" because you are attacking the statement, not the person.

Not saying I agree with the original sentiment or the ones I posted above (which was for example only and reflect no personal belief of mine) but that is where the personal attack points come in.

Ok, back to the argument everyone. :goodvibes

That is exactly what I did and still got cited. I said the THE COMMENT was ignorant and rude, NOT the person that made the comment. Still got points.

Well I got points too! My response was deleted entirely so I don't even know if he got the pleasure of seeing it before it got taken away...I hope he did though. ;)

It makes me sad that there are people who think this way about other people. If that comment had been made towards a specific ethnic group instead of a regional group, I think this whole discussion would have been different. :confused3

I mean this makes sense, but when someone makes the statement "southerners typically this or that" then I feel they are talking about me...because i am a southerner...KWIM.
Just like if someone got on here and said "most of those Northern folks this or that" would be directed (indirectly) towards you. It makes me mad.

That is true. I'm not saying people shouldn't take it personally, just that as far as the letter of the law (or rules go) it is what it is.

I am not really one to get offended but even if I were I think I would write the notion that all northerners, southerners, people of a specific race or nationality or anything else could all be <insert insulting generalization here> as more of a reflection on the person saying it then at the group it is directed at.

You are right. To paraphrase Animal Farm, apparently some of us are more equal than others. Some groups are ok to attack and others are off limits.
