I used an umbrella last week in the parks and never came close to poking anyone. I just held it up high as I passed people close by. I used a small travel umbrella and it worked fine. However, did have to break out the poncho during fireworks so as not to block anyone's view.
There were a couple times it was literally pouring and windy. We took cover rather than try and walk through that. Even ponchos wouldn't help in those kinds of downpours.
I brought a gallon sized ziploc to throw the umbrella into when I closed it, so everything wouldn't be wet.
