I finally pulled the trigger and ordered an ultrawide zoom for my full-frame DSLR. I found a pretty good deal on Amazon for the now discontinued Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5. It seemed to get better reviews than the new Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6. And seriously - who can afford the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8? (Wish I could, but alas, I can't, so opted for the Sigma.) It should be in my sweaty little hands just in time for our upcoming trip to WDW in November. If I manage to take any "keepers" with this lens, I'll be sure to share.

Sounds cool!:woohoo: Can't wait to see your shots and hear how you like it:)
I think a super wide will be my next purchase. The guy at Ritz was just showing me some shots he took with a Sigma 10-20mm on his D300 in Boston. It would be great to have that super wide in the city. DD is going to school in Boston and plans on doing a study abroad for a year in Paris. Good excuse to get the lens and go to Paris!

Just received my latest toy in the mail today...the one glaring hole in my lens collection: ultra-wide. Newly joining my collection is the Tamron SP 10-24mm F3.5-4.5. Of course, I haven't had much chance to use it yet, other than the obligatory new-out-of-the-box tests to make sure all is well.

I really just had no idea how w i d e wide can be...this type of lens really is an entirely new perspective...even an entirely new way to shoot. The smallest differences in angles, side to side or up and down, make a completely different perspective and style of shot...learning when to use the effects, and how to best portray subjects in ultra-wide, is going to be fun! On my 1.5x crop sensor, the lens gives me 15mm to 36mm. I bought it mostly to shoot between 10-15mm.

Here are a few of my test shots, which impressed me for sharpness and color.

I am standing impossibly close to my house here - right at the end of the curving path up to the entrance...despite that, the entire path and most of my house are fitting within the frame:

An example of that strange perspective - cool, but needs to be watched when composing shots at angles like this - here I was shooting almost straight up, which is why the wall in front of the house has that strange angle:

Here, the grill of the car is roughly 1 1/2 feet from the lens...amazing I can fit the whole car in the shot plus much of the house and driveway too. Distortion control of vertical lines is quite good:

Again...I'm nearly touching this pole, and shooting nearly straight up at the glass bulbs. You can see my shadow just about on top of the pole:

Camera here is resting on the lip of the pool, which is 18'x50'. The handrail for the stairs is right at that lip, on the far left...yet makes it into the shot. This ultra-wide stuff is crazy!:

This is going to be very fun playing with...I can't wait for the weekend to get a chance to shoot around town. Though I can tell already this is going to be a much more fun winter lens - because of the time I want to take to set up the best possible angle and perspective, I'll need cooler weather to do that. Florida in the summer doesn't encourage spending long hours in the direct sun trying to get the best angle! Disney is going to be like photographing for the first time again. :)

Looks like fun. My widest is the Canon 17-40mm. I plan to borrow a Nikon 14-24mm for my trip to Colorado later this year. I rarely shoot wide, but I thought I'd make a concentrated effort at it for this trip.

Welcome to Club Wide! Now you are going to need that $$$ large diameter ND400 filter! ;)

Mark...you're shooting with full frame, correct? So 17mm is pretty wide already. My widest angle I'd ever shot with before receiving this lens was 27mm (18-250 in 35mm equiv). That's EVER! So this is all quite new to me, and lots of fun. I can imagine the difference though going from 17mm to 14mm is still pretty severe - small increments on the wide end seem to have a much greater effect than small increments on the telephoto end.

Bob - let's not even go there! Those 77mm ND400 filters are not cheap - I think I'll go without for a while! Either that, or use my 58mm ND400. Think I'll get any vignetting? ;)

I switched to full frame because I had so much trouble doing the conversion math.

I thought you were talking about a mobil home.... Hehehehehe

Mikeeee

Wait...those bigger mobile homes are called 'double-wides', right?

Don't have one of those...just this lens! :)

A friend of mine in Scottsdale has one though (double wide)...pretty nice place too! (it might even be a triple-wide...on a couple acres of nicely landscaped land). Out there, a mobile home makes some sense...here in Florida, it's a bit more risky, what with hurricanes and all. :O

The 17mm on your full frame is very close to the field of view of the 10mm on a 1.5x crop lens. 10mm has the field of view of a 15mm on a full frame (vs Nikon, Pentax, Sony crop dSLR) or 16mm on Canon's 1.6 crop sensors. Your pretty much there.

Must...stop...looking...at these threads...:scared: You guys are killing me here. I told DH about your new lens and he said, "If they all jumped off a bridge would you?" I said, "Yeah, if the picture op was there!"

Very nice, can't wait to see more!

Enjoy it! UWA definitely has a learning curve and I'm still right at the beginning of it with my Sigma 10-20mm.. I still haven't used it at home as effectively as I did at WDW.

One of the worst pieces of advice you'll hear about wide angles is that they are terrible for taking pictures of people. Don't believe it. They just require care and understanding. Sure, if you stick it right in front of someone's face, they'll look they have a nose the size of Dolly Parton's...well, a big nose. Don't use it like that.

You can purposely use one to distort and make people look big or small. Here is a shot taken from really low of my youngest (then 5 years old) son. We call it the Giant Erik picture.

You can also use them for non-distorting shots. One of my favorites is to run alongside the kids with the camera set really wide. I hold the camera down at their level, aim vaguely towards them, and shoot.

Oh, and I apologize for the angled horizon. I wasn't trying to be artsy. I just don't hold the camera very level while I run.

If by vignetting you mean a circular image with darkness all around... then yes! ;)

I only have the "cheap" B&W 1.8 ND filter, it costs more than some of my lenses! Isn't this a great hobby? ;)

Congratulations on the new lens! I hope you have an absolute blast playing with it and seeing what it can do. :goodvibes

:rotfl2: I'm in the same boat! I can't read a thread on here without thinking "I want one" :badpc:
