UK Cruisers Booking Tip

Previously I've always booked our DCL cruises through a US travel agent, generally Dreams, for the OBC offered. Paying in US$ doesn't bother me although obviously you have to accept that the exchange rate varies.

When checking around for the best deal recently, just out of interest I also checked some UK travel agents and was surprised to get a quote which was less than the sterling rate quoted on the DCL website. Although I got the quote online I had to phone to book and I expected the rate to go up to the same as DCL, but it didn't. The discount was approximately 6%, a larger cash amount than the $200 OBC offered by Dreams, and with it being in sterling I know exactly what my final cost will be rather than it depending on the exchange rate at the time I pay the balance. (Comparing current prices in $US and sterling, the exchange rate on DCL was approximately 1.6 which isn't bad.)

I had to pay exactly the same amount of deposit as if I'd booked direct with DCL in sterling, but the discount has been taken off my final balance.

I'm not sure if I am allowed to name the travel agency here but will say that it is part of an organisation originally founded in Rochdale which has various business interests including funerals, bank, pharmacy and supermarkets, as well as the travel agency.

In addition to the up-front discount, as a member of the society I will eventually receive dividend on the points earned on my purchase which will probably amount to a further 1%. (It costs £1 to join, taken from your first dividend payment.)

I was torn about booking through anyone other than Dreams, and I do like having OBC sitting in my account when I get onboard. But having more money off, upfront, won hands down. It isn't that I use a travel agent to do anything for me except book and save me a little cash; I'm very self-sufficient and prefer to everything else myself. So it's all down to the money and this time the UK travel agent offered the best deal.

If anyone is interested and hasn't worked out who the UK travel agent is, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the tip. Just to check, did you get a copy of what will be due at the final time of payment? Only reason I ask is because for a different cruiseline I found this but then when final payment was due the price had changed due to exchange rates and it worked out almost the same as the other company I had looked at. When I queried this the company stated that it was clear in their email (which I don't think it was) that this was price on the day and it would fluctuate.

Are you saying Co Op if you are it's a good deal. Virgin cruises also have good deals. I am sure their names can be mentioned as there for the UK and not in competition with the USA TAs note sometimes re exchange rates booking £ or in $ may look more attractive.

Yes, I've got the confirmation which shows the final balance due, in sterling. As I said earlier, the deposit I paid was exactly the same as I would have paid DCL if I'd booked direct with them in sterling. The confirmation shows the full DCL price but then deducts the discount. If I'd paid DCL direct in sterling the price would have been tied in, not subject to exchange rate fluctuations. So I presume that's what the travel agent has done - booked with DCL in sterling at the fixed price but then they've passed part of their commission on to me as a discount.

Yes they did that.

Yes, it's the Co-op (specifically Midland Counties). I looked at Virgin but they were actually quoting more than I could have booked direct with DCL.

Fab! This is very good to know!

Thanks for the tip, I've always booked directly through Disney and not considered using a travel agent (certainly a UK one).

Once it's booked can you access your booking through the Disney website or does it all have to be done through the agent? What about picking your cabin and adding your Castaway Club number, does the agent do that too?

You can access the DCL site, you can book palo and spa and shore trips, you will not be able to prepay tips the TA will advise you of the cabin no. Advise Cop op of your CC number, on booking. DCL should pick it up by address.

Thanks for the quick reply! Could you change the cabin number if you wanted (or does the TA offer you a choice of cabins when you book)? We always try to go as close to centre of the ship as possible to limit motion sickness.

The TA should link in to the DCL website and offer you what rooms are available, if you want to make any change you do it via them.

Midship middeck is best to avoid SS.
