Hi guys
Im looking for some advice from all the uk brides who have either had a disney wedding or are in the middle of organising one .. In a few days i am about to hand my wishes wedding deposit over .. Which was the best way to transfer the money to get a good exchange rate ? Also did you keep a british style wedding over there ie ceremony and reception which continues late into the evening ? I am in need of advice !!!

As a lot of UK (and USA) brides have a Dessert/Fireworks Party after their reception as that is unique to Disney.
 
I have a FairFX card and just loaded it up and paid all the bill using that. Get a better £/$ rate too. I also use it when in the USA as a credit card and I always pay my DVC annual dues using it. Never had one issue with it at all. Highly recommended.
 
Hello I am a UK bride. I am doing a mixture of English and American traditions for my wedding in October. I am having a dessert party on top of the traditional reception as thought that would be something really special for our guests and I wasn't sure how the traditional long reception would work with a smaller number of guests. Not sure if this is allowed or not (sorry moderators if it's not) but there is a really active UK Disney Brides group on Facebook where we share lots of information and ideas. We always welcome new members :goodvibes.
 

How long is a long reception in the UK? I'm just curious about what makes a UK wedding different from one in the US!
 
I am curious too - and I am from the UK!!!
We tend have a ceremony, wedding meal/reception and an evening party with dancing. I pretty sure you guys have the same in the US - right?
 
I transfer Money onto my fairfx card so I only exchange it once - then use it like a normal credit card :)
 
Thank you for all your advice , in the uk we start or weddings around 11 am and they usually finish around 2am the next day so you spend a lot of time entertaining your guests. Am i right in thinking our disney weddings must complete by 10pm?
I am keen to hold a dessert party as thats a great idea . One thing i did read is that you hold your disney reception venues for just 5 hours ? I wasn't sure if i had miss read this ?

The standard time you are given when you book is 5 hours, 1 hour for pre-reception/cocktail hour, 4 hours for the actual dinner and dancing. However, you may be able to extend your reception, for the price of $400 per hour, plus any additional fees you may need to cover (such as if you have a bar or want an additional food service during that time - you have to cover the cost of those additional hour(s) ). You may want to check in with your consultant and/or planner, but that may be an option for you if you need it for a longer time frame.

I think it's the same, only much shorter. My wedding was at 2 pm, reception started at 3 and was over by 6. For evening weddings the reception still runs about 3 hours (7-10 pm, 8-11 pm, etc). Most reception venues in my area book for 4 hours at a time (the first hour is for set up).
 
Thanks guys i will speak to my wedding planner to see if i can extend my reception as my wedding is at 2pm and i had wanted to see the fire works and continue the party to the late evening other wise i may be better taking the 5 pm ceremony

In the American Adventure Rotunda the ceremony runs until 1 am... I'm SURE other locations can be extended if you pay.
 
Not sure on all the differences between UK and US weddings having never been to an American one but I've picked up a few things from the board and Four Weddings US - (it could be these are British traditions I've just never noticed!):

Sand Ceremonies/Unity Candles we don't normally have these in the UK although I definitely plan to have a sand ceremony at our Disney Wedding.

More people walking down the aisle - in the UK it is normally just the bride and her father and bridesmaids and any flower girls/page boys.

Ceremonies do seem shorter but not sure if this is because of the destination wedding element.

More people doing speeches - I've seen a lot of matron of honour speeches.

Having a hen do and a more civilised bridal shower -Normally there is only one hen do which is generally very uncivilised......:banana:

Paying for a free bar - I have unfortunately never been to a wedding in the UK with a free bar. There is normally some wine with the meal and the toast but anything extra is paid for by guests. I definitely think more weddings in the UK should have a free bar.

I love that there are differences like the above and plan to incorporate a lot of them into my wedding as I think it will be extra special for our guests.

I must say, I disagree somewhat with your timings. Many of the weddings I have been to have had ceremonies which start at 2.00 or even 3.00pm, followed by a reception and then an evening 'do' which often needs to be over by midnight - particularly if the party is being held in a residential area.
I must admit that I have never been to a wedding here in the UK that is as long as you suggest. Perhaps it is just I have led a sheltered life xxx:)

How have you done it? Is it all by email and do they send you menus for meals and things to choose from? Is there a list of characters you can have at the reception? Thats all I need to know about, If I can't have Dopey for me and Pinochhio for him then we won't be doing it lol.

Most is done by e-mail, some on the phone, if your having a Wishes wedding you can have a planning and tasting session in person if you want to fly over.

I think you can have Dopey and Pinocchio, but I wonder if they would say you can't have them together given they are from different films.
 
I was thinking the same Clare - May not allow them to appear together.

Yes a rehearsal dinner is very common in the USA but not done in the UK. Same for Father/Bride and Mother/Groom dances.
