So, what happens if you mail a letter and forget to put on the extra postage? I forgot that the price went up and sent out 3 letters without the postage! One of those is our mortgage payment, so I am quite concerned!!!

I think it will come back to you for additional postage, at least that it what happened when the rate first changed. It might arrive postage due to the recipient, and I don't know what would happen then. Good luck!

It will most likely come back but your postman might have taken care of it. Once, a while back, I brought a letter out to my mail box as the postman was arriving. I handed him the letter without realizing the postage had gone up. He said no problem and reached over to a huge roll of 1 cent stamps. He said a lot of them carry them for the first few days after postage goes up. It costs the post office less money to provide a couple 1 or 2 cent stamps than to process and return a letter because it is missing postage.

On a side note, you know you can use the interwebs to pay bills now, right? It should elevate these kinds of mess ups, at least for time sensitive stuff like bills.

thanks guys, unfortunately I dropped it off at the post office, not in our mail box. As to web payments, we do most of our other bills that way, but the mortgage goes into a separate account, which is not set up for online bill payments.

How long do you think it takes for the mail to come back to us if they choose to send it back?

I once "mailed" a bill without any postage. Oops. And, of course, it was a time-sensitive credit card bill. The post office sent it back with a note that said "postage due". I don't recall the exact amount of time before it showed up in my mailbox, but it was long enough that my payment was considered past due by the time it arrived at the credit card payment center.
