I have a rental car rate of $117 for an intermediate car from Costco for Jan. 25th to Feb. 1st. Without thinking I just changed my flight home to a later flight. 3 hours later. I just remembered the car and went to look. The price went up $200!!! What will happen if I am three hours late returning it? Big fine? Or will they just adjust the time on reservation?

Depends on the time. You're probably paying a weekly rate. Will the extra hours push you into another day? By how much?

Pick up 4, return first time was 11:30 am. Now 2:30 pm.

If your pickup time is 4pm, then you will be fine, with no additional charges as long as toy return the car by 4 pm. Returning at 2:30 instead of 11:30 will be fine. No need to worry about it.

If you return a car late without permission then you might have to pay a penalty in the form of the entire rental being refigured at a walk up rate. But if you did not go into a new rental day (exceed a 24 hour boundary) you may have a case for not having to incur the penalty.

But some rental offices rely on the return times declared by renters to plan for the next renters. If a car came back after the expected time then a subsequent renter might be inconvenienced.

In the future you might want to declare a return time a few hours after you plan to return the car, but not go into the next rental day.

I agree you SHOULD be fine. However, I would contact Costco travel and make sure the rate you got wasn't 7 days + 'x' hours (as opposed to 8 days). There may be information on your confirmation sheet also.

You might play it safe and pick up the car normally and, on your last day several hours before car return time, call the rental agency and ask for an extension. If there is a small cost, go ahead and pay it. After getting back home, analyze the paperwork and, if your originally booked payment amount would have covered the extension (i.e. the extension did not go beyond the days and hours originally paid for) write to the rental company asking for a refund.

If your extension is denied you will have to return the car on time and sit in the airport for a few hours.

You should be fine. Your rental period is based on 24 hour days, not calendar days.

And it's always possible your inbound flight will be delayed, making this moot.
