I borked up the desktop PC.....
Again.
So ever since DH tried to install WindowsXP ServicePack 2, the computer will do this thing where it'll work fine and then you turn it off, turn it back on later and it won't connect to the internet.
So what he's been doing is just doing a restore and he showed me how to do one in case I needed to.

So tonight I go to bed, but I can't sleep. I get up, turn on the computer and it won't connect to the internet so I do a restore to about a month ago.

And borked up the computer.
Now when I turn it on, it acts like it's going to boot up, but then it doesn't. It gets to the screen where it shows the Windows XP logo, then shuts down and starts all over again...again only going to the Windows XP logo screen before shutting down and starting up again.

I don't know how to fix it either. Eep.

I think we just need a new computer since the other one is old and apparently borked. But I don't think if we can afford a new one right now which is why we've been trying to make do with the one we have since we don't use it for much other than the internet and maybe storing things on it like pictures, etc.

So how do I fix this? Anybody know?:confused3

It sounds like the restore borked something up...you are in a loading/reboot cycle..you need to get it to stop..

Best option, sounds like it may be a driver issue..try this..

As the computer is booting up, start hitting the f8 key, over and over..it may beep a few time, but you will eventually get to a text screen. At this screen, you SHOULD see an option for

Last Known Good Configuration

Highlight it and press enter, see if that works..if not, I will be here all night for Plan B

Sorry, I have no assistance to offer. I find I'm just entertained by the borked!!:upsidedow

After I take DS to school here in a bit, I will try that. DH told me not to mess with it, but if I fix it, it'll be a miracle. DH thinks that the hard drive has blown, which wouldn't surprise me given the thing is at least 5-6 years old now.

Not to frighten you (potentially) unnecessarily, but this sounds exactly like what happened to my old laptop after I installed SP2. It went into an endless boot loop and trying to boot in LKGC, safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc., never worked--it went straight back into the loop. I took it to a tech I knew and after threatening to take it out back and shoot it, he discovered that the motherboard was fried. It may be something different with yours, but I ended up having to ditch the stupid thing and get a new one. There was no resurrecting it.

Well..I did what you suggested. I turned it on and when it got to the boot screen, I hit f8 repeatedly. What came up was a screen that asked where I wanted to boot from (Hard drive, removable device etc). I selected Hard Drive and it went right back into the reboot-shutdown cycle.

If our hard drive is borked, well..then it's borked.:headache: We'll have to wait until after CHristmas to replace it. Till then we'll have to use DH's laptop which is nearly as old as the desktop.

I'm sorry too for I have no assistance to offer.. I am just curious what bork means.. Sorry for being uuuhhmmm stupid. (I checked online.. can't find that word)

The term is HORCKED people HORCKED-:rotfl2: and its a highly technical term that us IT type females use inplace of the much less lady like SNAFU or umm several other completely inapproriate terms-it means its broke and i dont know how to fix it:rotfl:

I used borked when I can't say the oth er word... [edited for word filter] :lmao:

It may need a BIOS update, if it is a name brand computer you can download it for their website.

huh..."horked" always meant "puked" to this IT-type female.

Amd I prefer the term FUBAR, ladylike or no. ;)

It's not a namebrand, unfortunately. V-something..a word I can't pronounce. DH got it for supercheap because we needed a computer and since we don't DO a lot with our computer, it fit the bill perfectly.

I really think the computer is totally and completely permanetly borked and will have to be replaced. This isn't the first time this has happened and I don't know how DH fixed it last time. It may not be fixable, which if it's not, it's not.

Ok, sorry i did not get to this earlier..I did not get into work until just now..

It does not sound like you got to the right place...The screen you are looking for should have multiple options, such as

Safe Mode
Safe Mode(with Network)
Command Prompt..

Yada, yada

Sounds like you got the boot menu...

What you need to do, is when you get the choice to "boot from Hard Drive", start hitting F8 again. You never managed to get to the Windows start up.

And as a female IT tech...Borked or FuBar are my normal "terms" to use when in customer earshot. Back on the bench...a lot more colorful!

So when I get to the screen where it says "Do you want to boot from hard drive, etc" I hit f8 correct?

Just want to make sure I'm doing it right.

And also..
when I can't say the oth er word... [edited for word filter]

I didn't even say the word and it got edited for filter.:rotfl: You can't even say what I said around here anymore I suppose.:rotfl:

Well..it's been fixed. DH couldn't figure out why it was doing what it was doing so he did a full restore from the restore discs which came with the computer. :(

All of my stuff is wiped out and I have to go reupdate Windows Media player, redownload some other things...ack. What an aggravation.:headache:

OUCH! Sounds like he went the drastic route..

The more I think of it, the more it sounds like you had a bad driver...video was probably the culprit.

I know Service Pack 2 was the root of the problem, but PLEASE do not run Windows without it. The SP's contain a lot of important updates to the system that need to be there for security.

Next time have your DH do something called a 'Repair Install' from your CD. That most likely would have fixed the issue. You still would have had to run updates/etc but at least you then don't lose all of your files.

It's a good time to think about a backup method so that if this happens again, everything is not lost...

We've tried to download/instal SP2 twice now and every time we do, it causes our computer to go kaput. Therefore we will NOT be downloading/installing it a third time. Nuh-uh. No way Jose.

Thanks everybody for trying to help anyway. :)
