Ugh-Just Got Here and Ready to Go Home...

Does anybody know how long a walk it is to that room? Are we talking a mile? I have no clue.

I can't imagine it's longer than getting stuck in the far end at AKL Jambo House.

I know how you feel. I'm one of those people who normally don't have trouble getting around, but have a horrible time getting around Disney.

We have had several rooms near jellyrolls. I think we were 2 doors down once.

I have a really cool story about one of my trips to BWV!!

We were on a trip with both of my sisters and their kids so I had been run more ragged than usual, I had been in the hospital a couple of weeks earlier, and I had also managed to put big blisters on both of my feet.

I had gotten separated from my folks because they wanted to go hang out in the gift shop, while I wanted /had to go back to the room to rest.

About half way down the long, long hallway...I saw an older lady struggling with a manual wheelchair by herself. My first thought was, you need to help that lady. My second thought was, your not able to help that lady. So, I finally mustered up enough guts to ask if I could help, and she reluctantly accepted. Guess what?

My own journey became easier, because I stopped to help somebody else!!

One other thought...do you think you could borrow a manual wheelchair from the front desk?

Well, the view is lovely this am, anyway! Jean, the medical situation is exactly why this bugs me. My DH had a liver transplant 3 years ago and is in kidney failure now. We hate to rent a scooter here because of the bus hassle but will probably have to go back to it. If he has to go on dialysis, well, you just never know which trip will be your last. I can't see dialysis and Disney mixing well, although if the DVC owners keep getting older... I don't understand why we get these rooms so often, but suspect it's because we don't stay a full week and these are what's left when you come in on a Thursday. I won't do Boardwalk view again; at least there are normally more preferred views to choose from. Hope your DH is doing ok.

I truly believe they give the renters the better rooms. I think if you own at a resort, you should have first choice of rooms, etc. If you own at SSR and are staying in OKW, the OKW people should come first. At one time, you had to stay at your home resort every other stay. I wish they would go back to that!

We also own at AKV and its bus system in comparison to BWV is like you have died and gone to heaven. However, if you feel the walk is long at BWV, you should avoid AKV where the walk at Kidani from lobby to end rooms on the north wing is about four times longer than the walk from BWV lobbby elevator to the last room furthest away from the elevator.
I was curious about this comment so I surfed over to "Map My Run" and mapped the walk from Jellyrolls through the Boardwalk to the bus stop. It was .21 miles. I then mapped the walk from the North wing of AKV Jambo starting with the Grand Villa and got .25 miles to the start of the long bus stop and another 5/10th to the end of the bus stop. Then, out of complete curiosity I attempted to map the longest trek I had at a regular Disney resort from building 34 at POR to the food court. It was .31. I knew I hated that walk!

Yes, you can. I got hurt on Disney property during our last trip and twisted my ankle/hurt my knee and was temporarily not able to walk at all. When we got back to the Beach Club, my DH went to the valet and a nice young man came with a wheel chair for me. We went to the concierge desk and they took our info. The wheel chair was free while we stayed there and we were to return it before we left. The next day, I could walk with a cane so we only used it the one day.

Our one trip where we stayed in a BWV 1 bedroom, we had the room right by Jellyrolls, but on the top floor. We loved the room, and since we are a family with older kids, it worked out nicely for us. Wish that Disney would take into account physical limitations when assigning room. We don't mind getting the rooms with longer walks, but in 30 years, we may feel differently!

Here Here. We also have children that are old enough to walk anywhere and everywhere. The wife and I also look at our trips as a good week of exercise. We actually search out long walks. I would gladly take the farthest room out. I will have to remember this on my next trip in hopes the close rooms go to those who need them.

appleorchard,

That exact thing happened to my DH & I on our trip to the Boardwalk a few weeks back - the only difference was we were in room 5095 (the very last room - from the elevators - but closest to the Swan). The CM told us we were "right near the elevator" - I'm not sure what elevator he was talking about but it definitely wasn't the one on the 5th floor).

And my DH has only one leg - he's an above the knee amputee. He said he never felt more handicapped in his life! Thank God we had his wheelchair! We had our ECV but it broke down and we ended up renting one there at Boardwalk.

It was our first stay at Boardwalk and I have to say I wasn't impressed - although it is a beautiful resort and we loved the convenience of the boat to Epcot and Hollywood Studios.

Hopefully your trip will improve!

We have reserved a 1 BR standard view room at BWV for our trip in September.
Where are those rooms located? Is there much of a choice of exactly where I could put a request in that would be closer to the lobby or at least closer to the Epcot side?

We rented on cash at BVW last year. We had a studio standard view and were on an upper floor overlooking the main pool. It was a very nice location and would love something similar to that for our stay this year but given that it's a 1 bedroom and on points, I'm a little scared of what I am going to get.

I think this is DVCMike's map:

The part in blue are the Standard View rooms. The walk to the lobby can be long, but the walk to the bus stop isn't so bad since you can take that path at the end of the building (where the blue line takes a right angle turn) across the lawn and the driveway to the bus stop.

I don't see what one has to do with the other. If I stay at my home resort every other visit and I have first dibs on a room it just means some renter is out of luck. In my case it would make things worse because I own at VWL where one might walk a little further but I prefer to stay at OKW where I don't care where I get because I rent a car.

I think if you do not have a medical reason or over a certain age you should pay to make special room requests that are granted. $25 per day seems fair to me.

Admittedly, I have not read all the replies to your post. DH and I love the 001 rooms and very specifically ask for them and receive them. (We never had a police / JellyRolls issue.) So I'm just thinking that you need to look at the room maps and specifically ask for certain rooms. Note I say rooms - plural. Give them some flexibility. Boardwalk is my favorite place on earth and they always take care of us and our requests. I'm sure if you ask you will receive. It also helps not to reserve on-line but to call member services and really talk to a person...that makes all the difference in my humble opinion.

As soon as I get home, I'm calling MS about our Dec. trip. We're in a 1BR standard then. I think most of the standard walks are shorter anyway. I'm done with the Boardwalk view--I think we've stayed on the BW 3 times and been in the Crest of the Wave building every time. The rooms close to Jellyrolls are the worst, because they're not near anything--it's a hike to the pool, to the bus and to the boat. At least if you're at the other end, you're halfway to Hollywood studios lol. In retrospect, we should have called for a scooter from one of the offsite places the first day. I need one too after this trip!

When I did a crude "finger measurement" on google maps, it looked like Jambo and BWV were both about 600' from farthest room to lobby. Kidani looked like 800'.

There really isn't a big difference between .21 and .25 when you're using your finger to measure :rotfl:. FWIW, Kidani was a LOT closer to the lobby than Jambo.

It is so far, this poor guy did not make it. ;)

I have had that room! On Day 1, I talked the whole way to the room. I could not believe how long the walk was. I twisted my knee in the park, made the walk even longer. We enjoyed the view, but the walk...

I said, " Disney should have a Camera through out the hall, tapping us all as we walked the hall the first time." LOL:lmao:

FYI - Buena Vista Scooters is located right at Boardwalk. Reasonably priced and no wait at all (ok - perhaps a few minutes waiting). It's definitely worth it!

We have had the same room 2 or 3 times of the 10's of times we stay at BW and love it. Yes at 2AM some noise but good view of the board walk. We always ask and get most of the time the top floor it helps.

Just curious...those who have had the infamous far down rooms...did you check in online? If so were any of your requests met?

What time did you arrive at BWV?...just wondering if requests are met if checking in online and arriving early?

We have never used online check-in and have had the x001 and x003 rooms quite a few times. We usually request upper floor and sometimes that request is met, sometimes not. We usually get to BWV about 2:00 or so. I think that arriving mid-week gives room assigners fewer options because there are fewer check-outs, so perhaps mid-week arrivals have less of a chance at getting requests honored.
I don't find the walk a big deal. When DH got to the point that walking was an issue, we started renting a scooter from Apple. I think Crest of the Wave has the best angle for viewing Illuminations and Wishes, so the trade off for a longer walk is a better view. I would much rather have these rooms than the 2nd floor rooms with the solid wall balconies or the 1st floor rooms. Since DVC involves so many years and we have quite a few points, I expect that sometimes we will be assigned rooms that are not our favorites. But, as I said in a previous post, we have had to cancel a few trips because of health issues, so I have come to be grateful to be in ANY room!
