So I finally bit the bullet and went to the dentist to get a tooth checked. It is sensitive to heat, cold, spicy, sweet, and bite. I knew it would need a crown, I just didn't want to admit (or pay for!) it. Oh well. If it will stop it from hurting when I eat my nightly ice cream, I guess that is okay!

I have 2, one on each side of my bottom teeth. They are expensive, my insurance only paid 50%. It's a 2 step process. You get the tooth filed down and an impression made, then a temporary cap is put in. Then you go back about a week later and get the permanent one on.

omg - I think I posted the EXACT same thread title 2 years ago! heheheh

yeah, insurance is a JOKE with crowns...I still paid big bucks out of pocket. be sure to get it done before the end of the year at least! heheh

I am hoping to only have to shell out $200. I can't get into our benefits website right now to see how it is covered. Well, Merry Christmas to me (I get it on December 28). Not as nice as the furnace I got on December 26 3 years ago, but still, nothing says "Happy Holidays" like dental work!

Hi! Are you sure you need a crown or do you need a root canal? I work at a dental office and when a tooth is so sensitive it is usually a symptom of a tooth with a dying nerve.(Unless the tooth is broken or decayed) If you only get a crown, there may still be sensitivity and a root canal might follow. If the tooth is broken down, a crown may be necessay anyway, but if the tooth itself looks healthy, (no cavities, decay or broken) you might possibly just need a root canal.

Dentist said he could see a crack in the tooth, so a crown is the best way to go with it. He did say that when they start grinding the tooth, if there is more to it, they do a root canal as well.

I know your pain...........I had a crown put on last June, and now I have another achy tooth on the other side, the crown here was almost $900.00!!! With insurance only paying half........believe me this time I am going to find another dentist, the last one was telling me what I needed and I said "hey.........I haven't even got the first crown paid for yet........his reply, you have insurance!!! Oh well it wasn't such a big deal except for the cash. But I am going to call around and find someone else. I grew up in Door County so I am still following the Pack.........a little disappointing this year though!!

ask me anything you want or need to about crowns.

i presently have 20 crowns.........no dental insurance.

i have been paying the dentist $100 a month for years and for many years to come.

only had root canals on 2 of the teeth though.

I'm feeling you. By the end of the year comes, I will have had three crowns put on. I am very very blessed, though. DH has Metlife Dental Insurance through his job, and they cover 80% of crowns, up to $2000 per person per year, no lifetime maximum. When all is said and done, I will only be out $316.20 for all three.

What I hate is that temporary crowns don't come in different colors. I have to have the tooth next to my front one crowned next week, and the temp crown is about two shades darker than the rest of my teeth!

I had to have a root canal then the crown. The root canal cost me 700.00. That was with insurance. The crown was 500.00. This is for one tooth. My daughter works in a dental office so I have to hear on a daily basis how important it is to take care of your teeth. She also reminds me that I should get braces for my top teeth. (They shifted a little when I didn't get my wisdom teeth out. They really are not that bad.) She even goes to the extreme of taking pictures with her camera phone to remind me to get the braces. Forget the cost. To her that means nothing. So bottom line I try to stay on top of my teeth even though it becomes very expensive. I forgot she even signed me up for the zoom procedure. That is when they whiten your teeth.

:grouphug: :earseek: :wizard:  ok.....I had to get a crown in Oct., once the shock of how much it's gonna cost is over...... our insurance pays only 50% so I had to pay a little over 300.00 .........glad it's over with. good luck!
