Ugh. I have to go Jersey Week. How Bad?

Ugh. Due to the ridiculous new attendance requirements forced on Jersey schools by the Feds I have to go to Disney during Jersey Week instead of our usual week later. Don't even get me started about PARCC lol. Anyway, in addition I get to pay extra $1000 for airfare and dealing with crowds that I'm not used to - how bad is it going to be???

Haven't heard of attendance requirements?? I'm taking my daughter out from 11/9 through 11/18.

I was there for the end of Jersey Week 2012. It was not too bad. The only place I noticed the crowds were on the buses. But not really in the parks.

It's not that bad. You'll have some waits, but not even close to peak levels.
The killer is airfare. We've saved quite a bit by driving to BWI or DCA and flying from there.

Maybe it goes by district?

Our district just extended school days by 12 minutes. The kids have to come in 12 minutes earlier for the school day now.

We were there at the tail end of Jersey week last november and didn't think it was bad if you went to one of the recommended parks. The day we went to a non-recommended park I regretted it! You will hear a ton of Jersey accents but otherwise not a big deal.

oh the weather was great!!!

I think the Jersey accent is only south Jersey.

Wait? No more 18 days unexcused?

My district has never been like that. At 4 unexcused it's a letter home, then at 6 another letter, at 8 another letter and at 10 you're in truancy court. At 16 they repeat the grade.

I remember when I was in school the number was really high. Something like 18 or so.

The last time I took my DS out of school was when he was 9. Now it's just too much for him and on me.

If I do a mother/son or mother/daughter trip in the future it'll be during Jersey week. Then they just have to miss two days and they really do nothing those two days anyway.

I didn't mean 18 consecutive days. But I don't think in my town they retain unless it's over 18 days. Doesn't matter to me, my kids rarely miss school, we are lucky they are very healthy. But I do have a couple of friends who come close every year.

That week is crazy here. We close Tuesday (voting area) and then Thursday, Friday. I doubt anything useful gets done Monday & Wednesday. There aren't that many people in Jersey, how could we make Disney World crowded. lol

We took our daughter for the first time during Jersey Week (had no idea, we were in NH LOL) and it was not bad at all, crowd-wise. People freak out over it, no need at all. Have fun!

I'm sorry I didn't mean consecutive either. It's that many days for the school year...total.

My kids never come close either. They only miss for being sick and most times I get a doctor's note so we are excused.

That's exactly the days we are closed and I'm positive nothing gets done. lol

I'll throw another monkey wrench... I'm in Central Jersey (!) and the accent is really from transplanted New Yorkers.

Anyway, we're taking our kids out of school for the first week+ of December this year (DD 4th grade, DS Kindergarten). If the school has a problem with it then they can pay for my trip and my aggravation in going over the summer.

We were there during Jersey Week last year and it wasn't bad at all. We are going that week again this year. We met a lot of people who were there from New Jersey, but it wasn't like it was over-run with people. It's not like every single person in the entire state goes to Disney that week.

Schools in NJ close for a week in early October for a teachers convention and families head to DW

the NJ Teachers convention is actually always in early November - Thursday and Friday the 5th and 6th in 2015.
