UGH! Can't people dress up anymore??

I have lived all over the country and have seen jeans with tennis shoes. I never thought a thing about it. I don't think it looks sloppy at all. I find it refreshing to not concern myself with what other people are wearing. I do notice outrageous things, but tennis shoes, jeans, crocs, and sweat shirts seem like basic, comfortable, and practical clothing choices to me.

Just because a person chooses to dress comfortably, doesn't mean the person is a fat slob. But really, even if a person is a fat slob, I couldn't care less. I would find it exhausting to constantly judge people and put myself on a high pedestal.

I always find the higher the pedestal, the higher the fall when something happens that brings the person out of their perfect little world.

I can't even imagine what planet someone would be living on that they'd think sneakers don't go with jeans. :lmao: Come on, like jeans are high fashion anyway?

I just bought a Dallas Cowboys sweatshirt in Dallas because we were there for a once in a lifetime trip to see them play in their stadium. I paid $50 for it and you bet your booty that I have and will be wearing it out in public to go shopping, out to eat, and maybe even to church.

I had a Dallas Cowboys sweatshirt many years ago and I loved that thing. I wore it all the time! I sure miss it. Haven't found another sweatshirt that fit me that well yet!

I too wear jeans and t-shirts with Skechers tennis shoes. In Calif. almost every restaurant is casual. Brazilian BBQ is a jeans friendly place. Fridays at work everyone is in jeans and tennis shoes. I wear sweat outfits at home, but would never wear them in public. I only dress up for weddings, funerals, and cruise ship dinners! ;)

1. People keep mentioning fat, lazy slobs. FYI....There are plenty of skinny, lazy slobs. :rolleyes1

2. No offense to Ugg wearers, but how in the world can those be seen as dressier than sneakers/athlethic shoes? More expensive perhaps, but "fancier"? When I lived in Australia in the 80s, every student in the dorm owned a pair. They wore them all the time. To class, shopping, in the mud.....anywhere. No one thought of them as fashion statements. The joke was, "They're called Ugg boots because they are Ugg-ly." :rotfl2: If you were going ANYPLACE where you wanted to look presentable, the Uggs were left at the dorm. They were worn strictly for comfort. They were the Crocs of Australia 20 years ago. How those things morphed into something people covet is beyond me. :confused3 IMHO, a nice new pair of leather sneakers/athletic shoes couldn't look any more casual than a pair of Uggs worn with jeans. It's just not possible.

Love, love my Uggs, but I do agree, the classic are not the most fashionable in the world. I don't wear them for fashion, but for warmth in the winter.

I also agree that a Steakhouse would be jeans material for my husband and I.

With today's prices, especially at an al a carte type restaurant, I don't see $50 a head as that fancy. Gosh honestly you could spend that just about anywhere at a steak place just for the steak.

I'm sorry if jeans offend anyone, but unless the restaurant has a strict dress code, I think clean, pressed jeans is appropriate for a dinner out.

As a final point, I know I always personally feel a little sorry for the women I see who are clearly spending so much take taking care of everyone and everything else around them that they don't take care of themselves. As a teacher I've seen this quite a bit. Moms (I mostly seem to meet the moms) who are clearly wonderful and caring parents who could look so much better. I don't think less of them, but I wonder when the last time they felt beautiful and desirable was. These ladies always make me wish I could treat them to a spa day and a makeover.

Wow - this post makes me so sad. You do realize that the same ladies might have no desire to have a spa day or a makeover and may actually be feeling sorry for you that you seem to be quite focused on appearances?

I've been wracking my brain to even think of what any of the parents at school wear. The only judgemental thought I can come up with was the lady who always wore shorts - even when it was freezing outside.

Ack - I do not even OWN a sweatshirt!!!

And if I did I would NEVER go out in public in it - they are shapeless, unisex, unflattering, yuck. I have more respect for myself than that.

Sneakers are for the gym/exercise class. And to pair them with jeans is a fashion crime. If I see that look it is usually a tourist.

I like to look good, I like to dress nice - we eat out 2 to 3 nights a week and always dress to the restaurant.

Do you think this dressing down has anything to do with how fat people are nowadays? They have nothing else to wear?

:snooty:

I think your emoticon doesn't even cover it.

For the record I do not own a seatshirt and I usually only wear ballarina flats with jeans. I wear sneakers for work, though,:rotfl2:

I guess I'm coming a little late into this thread, but I would never be disappointed if I went to a restaurant without a dresscode and saw people in jeans. If it was a restaurant WITH a dress code, and they were not following it, then I would be disappointed.

DH and I talk about how nice the people dressed 50 years ago. Honestly, the styles were a lot nicer, too. To each his own. If you want to dress up to go out to eat in a restaurant with no dress code, who cares what other people are wearing, as long as they are clean?

Didn't we have the same discussion a few years ago, but it was wearing shorts to Olive Garden?

I guess we were the Yahoos last weekend when we took the kids to Melting Pot. We all had on jeans as did most of the people around us and our bill was over $200 for the 4 of us. Flog us now........

ITA with you. I can't stand UGGs. I would never spend my money on them. But if some else wears them ok. I just don't see them as a status symbol like other people do. They remind of something that my Grams would wear.

Sure you do!

I think every Community Board-type forum, on every website, has a similar discussion, at least once a year. For as long as I remember, there have been people wanting to unilaterally assert their own personal preferences regarding standards (for attire, for everything, really) onto everyone else. I doubt it'll change anytime soon.

I don't have a problem with people wearing jeans to restaurants -as long as they're covering their crack and not 1/2 way or more down their butt. I do have a problem with people taking their kids to the Pediatrician or walking them into school wearing an old t-shirt and pj bottoms - at least get dressed to do this. Yes, I have seen this more than once in my area. I can (kinda) understand with a college/high school crowd but c'mon these are adults with kids.

I wouldn't consider the Olive Garden or the Melting Pot an upscale restaurant, so I would definitely wear jeans to either of those places - & have! I wouldn't wear a tee-shirt or sweatshirt to one of these places though. I'd choose a nice shirt or sweater.

I assumed (maybe I shouldn't have assumed) that the OP was talking about a more upscale restaurant.

Regardless, there are some that take the casuel dress appearance (jeans, etc) to the extreme & just look sloppy.

I think there are better things in life to worry about than what other people wear. Seems to me people shouldn't worry about what other people are wearing or doing. Learn to be happy and enjoy your family, why on earth are you caring about what ppl wear?? I just don't get it.

I agree. DH and I enjoy dressing up for nice dinners and special occasions. Fact is, people wearing jeans and such paid the same amount we did so if the place is not enforcing a dress code...oh well. It never affects our good time.

While I have not been to Fogo De Chao, we have been to other Brazilian steakhouses and I would feel comfortable wearing nice jeans and a nice shirt. I wouldn't wear cut-offs and a tank top, but a nice pair of jeans and a nice shirt would be fine.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I have an example: One mom in my class in going through a divorce. She volunteers regularly in my class and we've become friends, even going for coffee. Before Christmas she had gotten a new hair cut and treated herself to some new clothes and I complimented her on looking so nice. She started to cry and said that she hadn't felt pretty in years.

I know my own mom also felt this way. She was a single parent who was working and taking care of a child. Now that I'm able, I love taking her to get a little pampering so that she looks and feels great.

Sure you do!

No, I don't. I also don't think less of parents who can't afford Christmas gifts for their children (in most cases), but I do feel sorry for them.

Yes, but not all Mom's look "comfortable" because they can't afford a spa day. I love being comfortable. I live in my crocs and sneakers. I hate shoes, just can't ever find any that are truly comfortable. And the assumptions about hair and makeup .. yecch! Mascara runs, even face foundation runs when your eyes run in the winter, eyeliner smudges, lipstick wears off and has to be reapplied - whew! I just don't really care to take my precious time in my life checking these things all day long. I'm me. And I'm happy being me. If people judge me on shoes and makeup well, too bad, because I just couldn't be bothered! And I know lots of Mom's like me, that stuff just isn't important to us. All I can say is, like me or hate me, whatever you want, but don't expect me to be like you. I'm me.

I agree with the PP, I have no desire for a spa day, a makeover, a facial, manicure, pedicure, color, highlights.... BLECH!

Laugh at my grey all you want.... roll your eyes at my sweatshirt and sneakers with jeans. Chuckle that there is no makeup on my face.

Bottom line is I spent all of that time and money on my boys. Playing catch, one on one in the driveway (until DS reached 6'6"), sitting at thousands of games in the cold, rain, uncomfortable bleachers, you name it.

And you know what? I wouldn't change a thing. Especially not for people that have nothing better to do with their time than criticize others! :)

.

How sad that nobody complimented her or made her feel pretty before the new spiffy clothing and the expensive beauty treatments........
