UGH! Can't people dress up anymore??

I don't care what other people wear, and I really can't understand why it would matter to anyone.

I can't even imagine what planet someone would be living on that they'd think sneakers don't go with jeans. :lmao: Come on, like jeans are high fashion anyway?

I know you guys think I am ridiculous - but no sneakers is a deal breaker for a number of bars/clubs in Chicago.

I see bouncers sending people away all the time because of sneakers!!

From a few websites today:
We do not allow athletic wear such as tennis shoes, gym shoes, walking shoes, athletic hiking boots, beach sandals, flip-flops, open-toed sandals on men, T-shirts, jerseys or sweatshirts. Collared shirts tucked in would be fine. Jeans are okay as long as they are not ripped, frayed or torn.

Dress Code: You will NOT be admitted with GYM SHOES

No gym clothes, work boots or gym shoes.

No white shoes, no athletic shoes, no Timberlands, no T-shirts

I only read a few posts... here is my take on.

Upscale... downscale.. whatever scale.. I may be eating my hotdog or fillet mignon- I just don't want to see any butt crack sitting in front of me. I don't want anyone to be loud and abnoxious around me while I am enjoying my food. The most important things here are- the food, the service, and the cleanliness.

This has been an interesting discussion.

It's time to take my fat, lazy, slobby self out to dinner. I'm going to the new Italian place in town. Yes, I will be wearing jeans. No, I will not put on make up. It makes me break out if I wear it too often, so it is reserved for weekdays and special occasions. I don't think it really makes me look that much better any way. So if my fat lazy self offends anybody, I apologize in advance. I'm going to enjoy my meal and my book and nobody else can change that.

You just live in Missouri anyway, so you ought to be safe. :rotfl2:

j/k!!!

Ack - I do not even OWN a sweatshirt!!!

And if I did I would NEVER go out in public in it - they are shapeless, unisex, unflattering, yuck. I have more respect for myself than that.

Sneakers are for the gym/exercise class. And to pair them with jeans is a fashion crime. If I see that look it is usually a tourist
.

I like to look good, I like to dress nice - we eat out 2 to 3 nights a week and always dress to the restaurant.

Do you think this dressing down has anything to do with how fat people are nowadays? They have nothing else to wear?

Don't think your being ridiculous for following club rules. It was your comments that I bolded in your OP!

So if there are posted dress codes that are enforced, what is the issue?

I think realistically, if restaurants alot of resturants had dress codes they would lose a tremendous amound of business (depending on location). Dining out is not the special ocasion it used to be. Frequently it is more of convenience mixed with a treat.

I have no problem whatsoever with an establishment having enforced dress codes....it is just fiscally, they may see a drastic decrease in business based on their location.

BUT did you see anyone in Jammies ??????? ;)

I swear I see it all the time Jammies and house shoes

That's great. For those people who all that matters to, they have a nice place to go. But those rules do not apply to most establishments. Interesting that they don't have a no fat rule.

It's an "unwritten rule." Fat people only wear the clothes mentioned in the rules. :rotfl2:

My husband and I are very casual people. If we're going to a very exclusive restaurant, I'll wear dressy slacks and a top to match. We don't do this often though because we both like wearing jeans. Going out to eat, for me, should be a relaxing experience.

No customers................ :lmao:
I disagree that there wouldn't be or aren't customers. I've gone to establishments that don't allow jeans. There is a restaurant around the corner from me that has been in business for over 30 years which does not allow jeans or sneakers.

Your every day chain restaurants, family type restaurants, local bar restaurants or mom & pop places are not these type of establishments.

I only hope the people lamenting the fact that society no longer requires you to "dress up" for as many tasks as it once did, realize how shallow, elitist, snobbish and materialistic they sound. And for that matter, how others dress has never had an influence on my dinning, funeral, flight or whatever experience. I do tend to dress up if I go to a nice restaurant, but only because I'm not required to dress up at work. So it's a nice change FOR ME. However, I totally understand the guy who has to dress nice 9-5 everyday who wants to bum a little on his night out. It doesn't offend me at all. As for the plane, when the airlines can guarantee me that I won't be trapped in the terminal, or worse the plane, then I'll dress up. Til then, I'm dressing for comfort.

A few in Chicago are like that, but when I was living there (until 2007), I never got turned away from anywhere because of sneakers - and I would always wear sneakers (albeit clean sneakers), even when it was written in the rules. I do remember being turned away from a bar once because of the cut on my jeans. The weird thing was it was easily the "least nice" club on the block, and my friends and I ended up going to a much nicer establishment a few doors down.

"No sneakers" rules are quickly becoming a thing of the past just about everywhere, especially night clubs, as with "no denim" and "no t-shirts."

In the fashion industry, the trend of wearing sneakers/nice jeans/a nice t-shirt out is called "Los Angeles Casual" (on the West Coast) or "Miami Casual" (on the East Coast), since it originated in those two cities and has since widely spread. Now the latest is to wear graphic zip-up hoodies to nice places.

Wow. Seriously.

I can certainly see how it's much better to forgo all sense of ceremony or specialness in all occasions. Jeans and sneakers should of course be worn to weddings, funerals, graduations, five star restaurants, job interviews, church, and to every and all special occasions.

I can also see how caring about my appearance does indeed make me "shallow, elitist, snobbish and materialistic." I also care about manners, so I would suspect that also makes me an elitist snob. If I were to go to the five star restaurant I would know which fork to use and well as how to lay it down to indicate I was finished with my meal. Of course, seeing as I can now go in my pajamas I guess I may as well eat with my hands, as it doesn't matter. After all, no one has to watch how I eat, what business is it of theirs?! That will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am not "shallow, elitist, snobbish and materialistic."

Truthfully, I don't care what you wear. I don't care if you garb yourself in a paper bag. But if you want to talk about judgmental you don't need to look any father then a mirror.
