Uggh....Flea Problem

I have been blessed for the last few years with not having ANY issues with fleas. It seems my luck has finally run out. I have a flea problem...and I have 7 animals to contend with.

Now I plan to purchase Advantage, as it is the best, but I also am NOT buying it from my vet as they charge WAY to much for the same product I can purchase online. So I am going to get it online for next month, but want something for this month.

Hartz makes a good product that handles eggs and the larvea, any one else use this before? Any good recomendation on relief for my babies. I am having the exterminator come out on Thurs morning for the inside, but I also need to treat the sandy area that I know they came from outside...any good suggestions..

Advantage is a miracle product. We are SO grateful that is available. We also buy it online but can get it within a few days. Any reason you are waiting until next month?

We've tried products for the outside yard but to be honest, haven't found anything that seems to make much of a difference. Once all the animals have Advantage, the fleas will stay off.

I have used the Hartz flea control for my cat (I think you are talking about the drops on the back on the necks, right??). Anyway, do not waste your money!!! It didn't work on one cat...can't imagine it doing any better on that many animals!! I have used the Advantage and got sick of paying something like $54 for 3 months. I was discussing this with my sister and she told me all about something called BioSpot. It is from Drs. Foster and Smith. They used it on their dog for the past couple years and have NEVER had one flea since they started. Not only does it work for fleas, it also works for ticks and mosquitos!! Best of all....it is only $11.99 for a SIX MONTH SUPPLY!! I just got my kit for Sabrina on Saturday. I know they offer $5.00 off your first purchase. They have an on line store as well as catalog orders.

I will look into Bio Spot...I have always used Advantage and never had any problems with it. It has always been my miracle product.

The reason as to why I am waiting till next month is if I put on an over-the-counter medication this month, I have to wait till next month to use it again.

And my puppies are old enough. They will be 4mo old on the 11th of March.

My sister was "kind" enough to share the information about this product last summer AFTER I had ordered the Advantage! Couldn't of shared when I told her I was ordering the more expensive stuff!! They had always used the Advantage on their dog til a couple years ago. I figure I will use it starting late this month for the cat....I think it's still too cold here in PA for the fleas to be active.

Your puppies can't be 4 months old already!!! Time doesn't go by that fast!!

BioSpot would be worth a try because if it works, it is MUCH cheaper. We've tried BioSpot and Frontline and neither worked for us as well as Advantage. We are a multi-pet household (both cats and dogs) so maybe that is why.

If it were me, I'd go ahead and order Advantage and wait the few days it takes to get it. Maybe give a bath with flea soap and use a spray that doesn't preclude using the Advantage as soon as you get it.

Oh, we also use Foster and Smith and have been very pleased with them.

We use BioSpot on my little Tess and it works great! It's worth a try!

P.S. We have multiple dogs on both sides of our fence, and so I'm sure we have fleas in the yard. But thank goodness none get on our dog!

My aunt who is a dog expert swears by brewers yeast in their food. She has 7 dogs and 3 cats (inc. 5 champion agility dogs...gotta brag!) She works very hard to use "natural" methods with the animals when possible.

Ok...I read A LOT of bad things about BioSpot...I have decided Frontline may be the way to go as it lasts 3 mo and with 4 dogs...3 mo is good to me. And even better I have found it affordable ona site where I can get both dog and cat treatment for a total of 40.72. Awesome deal. Anyone have success with Frontline +?

I may be misunderstanding your post but. . .

Frontline is a monthly application, just like Advantage. You buy a package of 3 tubes so a "package" lasts 3 months, not each application. Still the price sounds good. It would be worth a try. Maybe some Frontline fans will speak up. It worked ok for us but we still had a few fleas. With Advantage, we never see ANY fleas.

Make sure you treat the yard too. But, make sure the treatment will not harm the dog. We used (and don't laugh) Ivory dish detergent on our yard for the fleas. Believe it or not it killed them and haven't had a flea problem for a couple of years.

Every now and then my cat gets fleas (though I can't figure out how since he's strictly indoors!) I always go out to a pet store or even Wal-Mart and buy those little oily tubes of stuff you put between their shoulder blades. It's worked every time!

When we first had a flea problem, the vet gave us Frontline and it didn't work at all. We switched to advantage and it has worked wonders! It is expensive, though. After the fleas went away w/ the advantage, we quit giving it to the dogs. They haven't had fleas in about 6 months Since it is expensive, we've decided to just wait and use it when we see fleas. It got rid of the fleas the last time really fast.

I would NOT use Hartz either. I have read the most awful thing about their flea products but mostly that the poison they use on fleas also can make animals very very sick.
