Associated Press tally shows the number of U.S. military deaths in the Iraq campaign has passed 1,000, including 998 U.S. troops and three civilian contractors working for the Pentagon.
The tally includes deaths from hostile and non-hostile causes since President George W. Bush launched the Iraq campaign in March of last year. The 1,000 mark was reached amid a spike in fighting in which 14 U.S. service members died in the past two days. Two were killed Tuesday in Baghdad in fighting with militiamen who support renegade Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told reporters at the Pentagon that in fact, many thousands of Americans have died in the larger war on terrorism -- and that the Iraq war is just a part of it.
The latest fatalities in Iraq followed the deaths of seven Marines killed earlier Monday in a car bombing on the outskirts of Fallujah.
Monday was the deadliest day for U.S. forces in four months. A suicide bomber in Fallujah killed seven U.S. Marines, along with three Iraqi soldiers.
